Re: How is life like for a mature student at Durham?Sure yes I was..!! I got the offer and accepted but I still haven't been assigned one!(Original post by NetPhantom)
I don't know if you were refering to me, but I am in the Foundation Centre, so it's different from you.
In my case, it was almost instantly, and I got Stephenson (yayyyy).
I think it takes around 3 weeks to know what college you will get.
Hmm...I guess I have to wait for an email... -

Their target is to provide the college allocation within 3 weeks of academic offer. They managed that for me despite the xmas and NY close down. -

Re: How is life like for a mature student at Durham?
This much I know: I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to study in Durham, I am sure that they will push hard for research departments now they are with the Russel Group and I can guarantee I will have a blast!

I have the deep, dark certitude I will make the most every step of the way, and, in top, I got twice the luck: knowing Queens Campus in the first year and Durham in the 2nd, 3rd and whatever

Re: How is life like for a mature student at Durham?
Hey All,
I am a mature prospective undergraduate at St. Hilde & St. Bede (Law), aged 30. Glad I am clearly not alone here :-) Went to the visit day last week, am teetering on the point of accepting in preference to Bristol... May need just one further push that will convince me to accept the offer.
Durham seemed lovely - an impression of course bolstered by the divine weather last week. Didn't really see too many mature students, but was sure I wouldn't be the only one. Accommodation would be a headache.... Perhaps....

Re: How is life like for a mature student at Durham? It's a though call I must say. Bristol and the law department are very very good. Not to mention that the deparment is based on the iconic wills memorial building which is simply stunning.(Original post by DFJENKINS1)

I am a law graduate (solicitor now) but going to Durham for sustainability and development course.
My other option is UCL but I am visiting Durham in 3 weeks time to see how it looks! I am however tending to Durham!
If you like both just think on where you would really like to study! -
Re: How is life like for a mature student at Durham?but mature students are not there, in plain sight!(Original post by DFJENKINS1)

they are hidding, lurking in the dark, ready to take Durham Uni by assault!!!
"I see mature students" (whispering sound) -
Re: How is life like for a mature student at Durham?I'm a mature(ish) law student - 25 - in my 1st year. Durham has been brilliant, and I'm living in college. Another chap in my college is about your age as well - all in all, there are are 3 or 4 of us, and where I am everyone dives right in. Age is a relatively unimportant difference in my experience, shared interests/outlook tend to be more noticeable. Of course, my college is one of the smallest, but that shouldn't make a difference.(Original post by DFJENKINS1)

I was choosing between Durham and Bristol too, among others, and am very happy with having gone with Durham. Of course, not everything is perfect, but particularly for the kind of law I'm most interested in at the moment (public/competition etc) its been brilliant.
There is also the college MCR scene, which might be quite happy to have mature undergrads joining.
Feel free to PM me with any thing specific! -

Re: How is life like for a mature student at Durham?
PHEW!
I'm not the oldest!
I'm a wee slip of a lad at only 42 and will be studying Environmental Geoscience BSc at Josephine Butler college.
I did a foundation (level 0) in Biomedical science at Sunderland Uni in 2010 where i was the oldest by a long chalk but it didnt prove to be an issue to be honest. I was slightly concerned about the age thing at Durham just from the perspective of common rooms; as far as i understand it (and i don't really) undergrads go to the junior common room, unless your a mature student, in which case you go to the medium common room, does this mean your cut off from all the other younger undergrads? -
Re: How is life like for a mature student at Durham?I am not concerned about my age. Young people, old people, black people, white people... just labels(Original post by kev watson)

I am glad to be there and I will make the most of it, and I believe that if someone is annoyed by my age it will not be my problem.
I have met young people more mature than some with my age. We all have different experiences.
For me, this will be an incredible challenge, an amazing opportunity to meet hundreds of possible new friends and I am sure they are almost all open minded about having an old netphantom with them
