Am I a hoarder?
Its seriously hard to tell since I have information that goes each way.
Or I cannot tell if its just depression related as I have always liked to have a lot of stuff but only since I got depression I dont get rid of a lot.
The main reasons for NO is because I am happy to get rid of my stuff as long as I get a good price for it but that pretty much is impossible.
I have 3 quad core pcs in wardrobe which I want to sell as they are brand new but when someone offers you £100 for them when they cost £300 in parts and act as if they are doing you a favour and making excuses like "once you own something, even if brand new it loses most of its value" and despite me signing on so cannot afford luxuries so WANT to sell it I would feel ripped off.
So as I say should I get what they are worth then I would be happy for them to be taken but people just try and rip you off more these days.
The same goes for most of my possesions, I have dvds which I would be lucky to get 10p each for so if I sold the entire collection I would get a few quid!
So if I got a quid per dvd and if I really wanted to see a certain film again paid £3 to buy or £1 to rent I would be happy.
So basically the only reason I dont get rid of stuff is because of money, but because of that I have cupboards full of stuff I NEVER use.
What are your thoughts? -
Re: Am I a hoarder?
Well I think that your not a horder really, but it is very unrealistic to expect to recoup what you spent on things back. I spent £500 on a digital camera which a hardly used before I upgraded it so when I sold it on it was a bit rubbish to think I was losing so much when I sold it for £150 but that is life. Same with things like dvd's and books etc I'd rather just give them away to friends or charities that worry about the money even though I am always really skint and could use the cash. I think it is more likely that your depression is making you feel that things are unfair in life and perhaps worried about resources like money.

Re: Am I a hoarder?
I hoard bookies pens
Got about 30 alone on my kitchen counter.
But umm, as for DVDs, especially the ones worth like 10p, I always find it handy to have a collection so that you can sort of impress a girl who comes round.
As for the computers, i'd probably sell them on if I couldn't use them. Your friend is partially right in that they WILL lose value and are a waste of money if left sitting in your cupboard whilst becomming obsolete. Why not list them on ebay? -
Re: Am I a hoarder?Well the computers still cost about £350 new to build but you get someone lowballing you with the cheapest second hand price for each item they can find and even if the total equals the same as you are asking for a new fully built pc with good parts rather than cheap generic parts for example(as in my case) they go by the cheapest price for anything i.e price rather than quality etc.(Original post by Gurskoff)

I have had the 2 pcs in my cupboard for 3 years and they cost £500 to build then but even then was getting offered like £120 delivered for them when delivery alone was £20
I did once get offered £130 for just the motherboard cpu and ram but when the person got it he accused me of badly packing it and it not working and demanded I send him £10 to send it back(he hadnt even paid me for it yet and wanted me to give him cash, crazy) -
Re: Am I a hoarder?Well they are core2quads with 8 gig ram, win 7 64 bit, 1tb hard drive, radeon 4870 graphics card and the psu alone cost £70 new and £50 used(need to be to run graphics card) and blu ray drives but to get offered like £100 for them is shocking!(Original post by Stevo112)

I was worried about fees on Ebay but pc's seem to go for high prices there.
Even the dvds many are like boxsets its just people dont want dvds anymore unless they are recent. -
Re: Am I a hoarder?my personal advice would be to keep your dvds UNLESS you need some money bad. They are effectively worthless but come in handy with stuff like dating and mates.(Original post by Anonymous)

Cant you strip your components and sell individually? Either case, the extra computers do kinda constitute hoarding but it isn't THAT bad. You'd need to offload them soonish and take a pay cut though if you wish to get some money from them because the value is going to decrease EVEN IF they are brand new. I'd just list them on ebay, set up a £200 reserve and state exactally what you have provided, along with the individual costs. You pay 10% max and charge them for delivery. EZ PZ. -
Re: Am I a hoarder? You're not a "hoarder" but sometimes you gotta take the lowball figures. Its a buyers market right now, and they figure if they can't get it from u at that price, they can get it from somebody else.(Original post by Anonymous)

What are your thoughts?
E.g. I bought a car for about 3,800£, was still worth at least £2,000 3 years later when I had to sell, but I had to settle for 800£ cause it was the only sensible offer i'd got! -
Re: Am I a hoarder?Lol yeah, I wouldnt mind as much had the pcs been old and with cheaper parts but when I know I have kept them immaculate it feels like a kick.(Original post by dgeorge)

But having so much does keep me depressed, I have always had a lot of possessions as such even when I was 18 and left home I had a 20 inch tv(crt!) a Dreamcast, a PS1, a PS2 etc.
In fact even now take away the electronics and dvds/games and all I would own would be about 2 bin bags of clothes and maybe a box of books and a exercise bike and treadmill(which I never use and would give away when I move)
I do think I have a reasonable amount of "junk" though but again the main reason I keep it is I know its worth money but people will lowball me.
So that makes me think I am making excuses but I am at my most happy when I own just what I need and have money and can buy even small things like books or a dvd I dont own at moment etc. -
Re: Am I a hoarder?
You not a hoarder at all really....I hve piles more 'junk' than you-despite giving piles away to people and charity. I was unfortunately banned of ebay few years ago....otherwise im sure I could have got rid of this ...hence why I havent got rid of the stuff so far. Though Im gonna start advertising the more saleable goods on other sites soon.
The specs sound amazing on the PCs.....£100 seems ridiculously cheap to me...though im an amateur. Yes it is a buyers market at moment as somebody said, so you may need to take a small hit- but your completely right in not wanting to 'absolutely give them away. If you advertise on places like the loot and gumtree they should sell for a reasonable price. Alternatively as you mentioned, PC's/laptops go for high prices on ebay......so even with there now considerable fees, you should get much more than £100 a piece, I'd guess. -
Re: Am I a hoarder?
No you are not a hoarder. If you're depressed due to lack of money the last thing you want to do is sell all your stuff. You will end up buying it back again, essentially, to stave off depression. Also when you are earning in the future you will regret pawning your personality. Our personalities are projected onto our stuff just like our friends and surroundings.
I'll take those computers off your hands for at least twice that price, they sound wicked.Last edited by Arekkusu; 20-02-2012 at 21:58.
