I knew this would come up. Again I am using the anthropological term. It is not the same as the derogatory n word. I could not use black since there are blacks in south east asia and australia pacific that would belong to a different racial lineage.

    Hope that clears things up!
mate chill. I know it's not racist. It just sounds like a a black robot. that is all.

    jeeez. some people.

What an odd way of using it. Aryan as a word in and of itself doesn't really exist outside of 19-20th century racialist literature and ****ty philology. An Arya = North Indian. Airyan = Iranic speaker (Persian, Kurd etc)

As for "white" well there are several different, broad, classifications. A Greek as a Mediterranean is certainly not the same as a north European.

Race is often arbitrary but this poll is particularly bad. Despite your defense of "trying to use anthropological terms" you're doing a particularly terrible job.

I don't mean this nastily, just...yeah...you're wrong and people may well start calling you racist. I'm not, quite yet, but...

I fail to see what's so odd about my usuage. Wikipedia might help you out. Yes I know the term is broad, I mention this specifically as it would be silly to try and get into specifics.

What about Caucasians or Caucasoid people stemming from the Caucasus mountain range. Is that still a used term?

I did not use this term as it covers Semites and Indo Aryans as well.

The fact that you fail to see is what's problematic. Having produced work and studied lessons in this area I have no real need to check Wikipedia actually. You're wrong, end of.

Yes actually, though it doesn't really just mean "white people" since Iranians, Afghanis, North Indians and some African populations I believe are technically Caucasians due to facial configuration. As you can see the older terms, which have become more technical in a way, aren't always that helpful nor do they match colloquial usage. For me, for example, a caucasian is still a white european male, despite Anthropological usage.

I think something like north European, South, Slavic would do fine for Europe and so on if you wanted specific broad races. The poll choices here and just so wtf...

Notice the black at the end of the description. 'Asian' looking south east asians would belong in the Mongoloid catagory. Black south east asians and australian aboriginals share a similiar ancestory. They look more like african blacks than asians.

I thought humans were a species, not a race?
    True I suppose, but:

'Compared to the other great apes, human gene sequences are remarkably homogeneous. The predominance of genetic variation occurs within racial groups, with only 5 to 15% of total variation occurring between groups. Thus the scientific concept of variation in the human genome is largely incongruent with the cultural concept of ethnicity or race. Ethnic groups are defined by linguistic, cultural, ancestral, national or regional ties.'

Essentially, 'race' within the human race is a cultural invention - with absolutely no basis in scientific fact. Welsh and English people, whilst culturally significantly similar, are racially and genetically quite different as a people - with the Welsh being genetically similar to the Spanish and Irish, whereas the English have more in common with the people of the Netherlands.

As the quote states, of total genetic variation, only 15% (maximum - as low as 5%) occurs between 'racial' groups - most of the difference is within groups (ie, there is likely to be more genetic differences between Americans and Spaniards than Americans and those from the middle east ^_-)

I'm of Iranian descent, but there's some Turkish, Mongolian, Arabic, Japanese and French in me and all manner of other ethnicities mixed up in there too probably that I just don't know about!

I always thought "race" was more of a cultural identity rather than anything else th. Like even though I'm of Iranian heritage, I definitely would not say I'm of the "Indo-Aryan" race, in the same way that while a lot of Iranian and some North Indians are very pale, most people (including themselves) would still not say they're "White". (Although, a lot of my family members have an inferiority complex and like to think they're white ).

Agreed, that's why I avoided using terms like white in the poll. Indo Aryan does not equate to white in the european sense.
