Your top 3 directors.
Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

Re: Your top 3 directors. He didn't direct Transformers or Men In Black. If you're going to be listing his good films then 'Jaws' is the one that deserves a mention.(Original post by Agenda Suicide)
Saw somebody with an awesome name quote me, thought we were gonna share awesome admiration. How wrong.
Saving Private Ryan, MIB,. Schindlers List, transformers, although transformers and MIB is not on the same wavelength as SPR which isn't anywhere near as good as Schindler's list. -
Re: Your top 3 directors.Spielberg killed the golden age of directors in Hollywood with Jaws. In the context of this thread, Jaws probably did more damage for directors than it serves as an example of good direction.(Original post by Jackso)

Re: Your top 3 directors. How so? I'm not a fan of him, by the way, I think the guy really struggles to end films without making it overly-sentimental (with just one exception.)(Original post by Phalanges)

Re: Your top 3 directors. At the end of the 60s, Hollywood was really in trouble. Everyone was making really mediocre films, and nobody was going to watch them, which left the studios in severe financial difficulties. Then Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda went and made Easy Rider for a small amount and it blew up, which laid the blueprint for years of creative freedom for upcoming directors to make really interesting and challenging films. Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Terrence Malick, Milos Forman etc. all started their careers due to this, and some of the greatest films ever made were the result.(Original post by Jackso)

The problem with it was that a lot of flops were made. Give an unknown entity a bit of money and while the result won't be boring, it certainly won't always be Badlands either. When Spielberg came along and set the foundations for the blockbuster with Jaws, studios started to realise that they could cut out all of this risk simply by using really wide releases, huge marketing and simple concepts. Then George Lucas came along with Star Wars. Then the two teamed up for Indiana Jones, and the age of the Hollywood auteur died.
I'm not trying to say Spielberg is a bad director, because I like a lot of his films. But looking at the bigger picture then coupled with Lucas he is arguably one of the worst influences on American film ever. -
