Re: AQA Business Studies BUSS4 2012 - 21 June 2012 ThreadSo aiming for around 60ish raw marks out of 80 for each paper? Thank you!!(Original post by Smeemi)
You have 165/200 for AS. That's a solid A. You need 155/200 for an A overall from your unit 3 and unit 4. So thats around a high B on both. -
Re: AQA Business Studies BUSS4 2012 - 21 June 2012 ThreadDon't worry I haven't done any revision for unit 4 yet, waiting to finish unit 3 first.(Original post by RMA1)
I've barely started revision for unit 4! Still got unit 3 exam to do (which is ridiculous)
For unit 4 are you learning a few set case studies for the mergers and takeovers section?
So stressful and hard! Lol
-
Re: AQA Business Studies BUSS4 2012 - 21 June 2012 ThreadNo. You'd need about 54/80 on BUSS4 and around 51/80 on BUSS3. Still aim high though as the grade boundaries fluctuate a lot lol.(Original post by Camilla321)

Re: AQA Business Studies BUSS4 2012 - 21 June 2012 ThreadI got 66/100 in Jan on unit 3, my teacher is making me re-sit even thought i only need 66/100 in unit 4 to get an A overall(Original post by WaNaBe)

i got 190/200 at AS so put me in good stead, Unit 3 is a weird paper main points are just need to know what the formulas mean and how to work them out. Also make sure you know strategies for each functional area. Spending all day today and tomorrow morning revising it
I feel unit 4 is a bit more straight forward.

Re: AQA Business Studies BUSS4 2012 - 21 June 2012 ThreadWoah you did really well at AS, I got 184!(Original post by sergeant1)

In this exam they don't ask like about a specific topic, they could ask about marketing plans or workforce plans but a lot is you have to draw in knowledge from the rest of BUSS3, like know when you uses the ratios and investment appraisal formulas at the right time.
If you create an answer using two figures and put it into a formula you have already got "Good Application".
To get "Good Analysis" make sure that you make a point, say what this means to the business and then say what it means to the business again
My teacher has told me that if you get Good Application and Good Analysis (Best ones) in your first point, then they can't mark you any lower as you have shown you can do it no matter how rubbish the rest of your answer is. So i always try and make the first point of every question my best.
For top evaluation you can evaluate throughout but you need to make sure you include, points like "It depends on.." and say which factors are the most important in relation to what the question is asking.
Key point is not to forget that the case study is about what the firm in it wants to achieve so make the answers specific, addressing it corporate objectives in relation to functional objectives
Hope this helps

I'm just hoping that I spot the hooks in the case study easy tomorrow as I tend to make fairly obscure points that aren't on the mark scheme, but seem relevant if that makes any sense. I'm just going to try my best to have good exam technique, spelling, grammar etc, so then if I do make some dud points I can still receive most of the marks.

I'm quite good at picking out the financial bits to use and ignore the worded bits i could use accidentally :P i think i lost most my mark in the last paper on the 32 marker or the second 18 marker.
Good luck!

I think that we should use this thread to share research we have done. I'll start, here are a few businesses for each bullet point on Mergers and Takeovers.
The motives for takeovers and mergers and how these link with corporate strategy
- Kraft and Cadbury (Kraft wanted to move into emerging markets, also product development into confectionary)
- Tata and JLR (Tata wanted a premium car brand to enter into emerging markets with due to increasing middle class in emerging markets)
- Morrisons and Safeways (Morrisons wanted to increase market share in the south as they were already dominant in the north)
The problems of takeovers and mergers including difficulties integrating businesses successfully
- Kraft and Cadbury (Overpaid hugely, senior managers who had required expertise left)
- RBS and ABN Amro (Very little Due Dilligance, motivated by managerial ego boost, no post takeover plan)
The factors influencing the success of takeovers and mergers
- Tata and JLR (Tata turned JLR from loss making to huge revenues and very tidy profits in one year)
- RBS and ABN Amro (was unsuccessful due to lack of due dilligance among other reasons)
The impact of takeovers and mergers on the performance of the businesses involved
- Google and Youtube (After takeover Youtube turned into third most visited site on the net after Google and Facebook)
- Pearson and Edexcel (Edexcel went from 10m to 30m profits and became the biggest exam board in the UK)
- Daimler and Chrysler (eventually demerged due to clash of cultures and merger driven by ego's of chief executives)
- News Corp and Myspace (Failure to keep up or innovate when Facebook came around led to its downfall)
The impact on, and reaction of, stakeholders to takeovers and mergers
- Kraft and Cadbury (Went back on promise to keep UK factory open, hundreds lost their jobs, angered people of the local area, employees felt insecure)
- Coco Cola and Innocent (Innocent claimed to be ethical were criticised after takeover by Coco Cola)
- L'Oreal and Body Shop (Body Shop prided itself on anti-animal testing were taken over by L'Oreal widely known to test their products on animals)
The reasons why governments might support or intervene in takeovers and mergers
- Kraft and Cadbury (Government pressured to stop such takeovers occuring after hostile takeover and subsequent shutting down of factory by Kraft)
- News Corp and BskyB (Public pressured government to hand over takeover to Competition Commision, eventually News Corp pulled out over public pressure)
- IAG and BMI (Richard Branson claimed takeover would give IAG monopoly over certain flight paths, takeover was cleared by EU competition committee after IAG relinquished 12 Heathrow slots)
I'll add more to this later, ill also try to find some for Section B
you wouldn't be able to do something like this but for section B would you? really struggling with finding examples! Would be much appreciated!

Has anyone had the tutor to you package about takeovers and mergers? Its purely PowerPoint presentation slides and they are the most helpful notes I've ever had. I've then just split them up into A3 sheets and made mind maps. My teacher got ours for us but have a look on their website, they may be on there!
