I have what might seem like a bizarre, but is an entirely serious question.

Does anything happen if you answer a question in the exam that's different from the one your college was teaching you in the G3 paper?

My Geography class has been doing Coasts. I despise coasts, I'm not very good at coasts and I've been ill a lot this term so have missed a lot on it anyway.

I've seriously started contemplating just learning the extreme environments section and answering the question that corresponds to that in the exam.

But, am I free to do that? The rest of my centre will be answering coasts obviously.

I didn't want to ask my teacher because it would be kind of half insulting, half pointless for me to stay in the coasts class.

I can't see why not! Some people accidentally answered the wrong question at my school, it was still marked. They just didn't get good marks due to their lack of knowledge.

does anyone know what questions came up in Jan for section B. The website only has 1 past paper.

Also if the question asked you for methods of collecting data, do you say the ones you used and then the ones you could have used? Thank you

Think the first one was about types of data (primary or secondary) that can be used in the projects and the second one was asking what you found out.

I have a feeling section 1 will be food vs fuels and unit 2 will be water supplies in cities? You?

I'm not certain, but I'm fairly certain that the syllabus doesn't mention water supplies in cities at all? Which would make it unlikely. I reckon we'll get 3 short questions on food/fuel, then a long one on biofuels, followed by a very general cities question for part B. Or a very general water one, but I'd rather not think about that.

Also, looking at the past papers it does appear that they tend to omit one topic each time (one of the two not in the resource booklet) which would suggest a straight water or cities question, rather than a combined one.

In my WJEC guide it has water supplies in cites under Key Question 4.3 and seeing as Water and Cities were the two remaining topics, I thought they might decide to link the two together.

I hope so, hoping for a cities question if they do!

I can't pretend I'm not stressing over these exams (G3 and G4, took G4 in Jan but only got an E).

The most irritating thing is how varied the questions can be. If they sticked to only asking questions from the "key questions", 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc, I would feel much more organized. But they'll asked questions for the "content" too, like the pressures of Transport/Communcation, SPECIFICALLY.

Which means you have to have 25 marks worth of answer planned for each individual content point, but then 25 marks worth planned if a "key question" question is in. It does my head in.

How do you guys go about organizing yourself for any eventuality?

I'm scared they'll ask something I've not planned for at all. I mean, communications isn't even in the G4 WJEC book

Don't hold me accountable if it comes up :P, but I don't think communication is necessary. In the G4 Summer 2011 Exam Report there's a 25 marker on Transport/Communcation. In the report for that question, it seems to say that although the key question in the syllabus is "transport AND communication", it doesn't have to be both (and that the majority of candidates chose transport-only answers).

This compounded by the fact that my teacher didn't teach communication and the WJEC book doesn't have it, I think you can just roll with transport. You can check it out if you want to see exactly what it said.

I'm confused about grade boundaries i keep hearing that an A is 80% but then when i look on past paper mark schemes, it says like A=47/75....which isnt 80%
Would someone try and explain it to me please

Not sure if this has been answered yet, but I thought I would try and smooth this out.

So out of the 4 exams, there is a total of 400 UMS marks available: 100 for G1, 100 for G2, 120 for G3 and 80 for G4.

UMS scores are the moderated equivalent of your raw score (e.g when the paper is out of 75 marks). So dependant on the Board and the Subject, you could find that say 68% raw (e.g. 51 marks out of 75 - you find the raw % score by dividing 51 by 75, then multiplying by 100) gets scaled to 80 UMS marks (which is an A).

UMS scores are standard each year - for A2, 90 UMS is always an A*, 80 UMS is an A, 70 UMS is a B etc. So moderation is where the difference added onto your Raw score to get your UMS score is altered, depending on how easy or hard people found the paper.

    I'll give my example:

So far, I have scored 86/100 on G1, 80/100 on G2, and 120/120 on G3. As G4 is 80 UMS, there are a total of 400 obtainable UMS marks. I currently have 286, and can obtain a potential 80 more in G4.

When it comes to your overall grade, ignoring the A* for now, you look at the percentage score of your UMS marks. Lets say I get 0 marks in G4 - my final UMS score is 286/400, which when you divide together and multiply by 100 you get 71.5% - this means I am in the 70-80% category, at the low end, So i would get a B grade. Now lets say I get 38 marks in G4 - the confusion here is that the paper has 80 marks available, but the UMS mark value is also the same. That doesn't mean that scaling doesn't occur. So if i get 38/80, I would look on the WJEC website to find rough UMS conversions from previous years (in the hope that these wouldnt be changed much), and e.g. 38 marks would mean i get say 60 UMS marks. Now on its own, 60/80 UMS marks is a UMS percentage of 75% (or a B), but when added to my previous score of 286, I get 346/400 - this is 86.5% overall, so an A grade - right?

Theres another confusion - the A* grade is intended to test you more in your A2 examinations. To get an A*, you need 80% average (UMS scores) for your AS papers, and then 90% average (UMS) for your A2 papers, so G3 and G4.

Looking back, there are 200 UMS marks for AS, and 200 for A2. As I got 120/120 for G3, I only need 60 UMS marks (out of 80) from G4 to get 180/200 overall for the A2 papers, and 180/200 = 90%, which is an A*. Seeing as i got 86/100 and 80/100 for the two AS papers, these average at 83 UMS, which is an A, so i have satisfied the A* requirements in getting an average of 80 UMS or more for the AS papers, and 90 UMS or more for the A2 ones.

Apologies for this being so long winded, and I'm sure many of you may know this already, but for those who don't I imagine it can be extremely useful, because being told you can get 66% in G4 and get an A* (like me) can be a lot more confidence boosting than being told you have to get 90%. I hope this has straightened things a bit.

I'm so confused. There's too much to learn for G4. Think I'm totally f*cked and I need an A in geog to get into my first choice uni. :/
