Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots?
One more thing, given the opportunity now, I would gladly take back the way we were before partition but after the union. I would not mind living in a 32 county state of the united kingdom, swearing an oath etc.
Obviously this would have been a highly controversial opinion at the time for a nationalist/republican -
Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots?for starters he is referring to the north of ireland(Original post by nmudz_009)
Sick of people thinking of the north and south as being in different countries
secondly i for one would love to be a separate county
majority of people ive met down south are ignorant *******s who would take the time of day to give you directions never mind save your life if you needed it -
Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots?Well I thought the aim of the nationalists was a united Ireland that encompasses the entire island and is completely free of British rule? Not just for themselves to personally be free of British rule? If they wanted that, they could just cross the border.(Original post by That Bearded Man)
Would nationalists still see a united Ireland a possibility, therefore be prepared to gamble than take their opportunity and exclude themselves From being British?
Opinion polls suggest that even now the majority favour the status quo. Get rid of the nationalist areas and what you're left with is a small, rump Northern Ireland that is full of unionists who will probably be even more determined to remain part of the UK. So even though it might seem like a step forward, if the aim is for a completely united Ireland, it would really be a big step back. It's not like the B-Specials are prowling the streets anymore and the Troubles are over, so if I was a nationalist I'd wait it out. -
Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots? No! Really! They don't give you their time? But, you're so polite and charming(Original post by kopite493)

No! Really! They don't give you their time? But, you're so polite and charming
then they just walk away
although to be fair i am going to assume they cant understand my accent but even so saying that before walking wouldn't go a miss -
Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots?I have never once been blanked once I have gotten a strangers attention. They might not know where something is, or don't have a watch etc., but they say as much, they don't just walk off. If you think the majority of 'southerners' do that, then you must have asked about one 'southerner' and gotten unlucky.(Original post by kopite493)

Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots?Could've fooled you? Really? Good god, it's almost like we're pretty similar, us Brits, if you can't discern the difference between one or the other. Further to that point, I do not live in England. I never have lived in England and I've never suggested otherwise on here or elsewhere.(Original post by 1tartanarmy)
I will get back to your other points when I have more time. In a rush right now but I had to say this.
Your scottish? Could have fooled me. You have 3 different flags about your profile and not one is the saltire. You are living in England too out of choice I presume?
One of those flags includes the saltire. However that is not what they are there for - I have, for example, Malta there because I like Malta. I have previously had a whole number of flags in that position: sometimes due to events, sometimes to demonstrate a partiality, sometimes to annoy people and sometimes just because I like the design.
I don't really get the anti-English stuff. I certainly don't believe there are 'English' political views.Your views are so English biased its unreal. Let our.... mine and your country make its own decisions. Let us govern ourselves and vote SNP, vote independence. We have a top class set up and the moment and its being threatened by the conservative government down south.
You'll also probably know that I'm a Conservative - there's quite a few of us in Scotland, despite the propaganda. Alas, the government of our country is not - it is a coalition.
I have no qualms with saying that I'd completely abolish or privatise the NHS given half the chance. Whilst I am happy to keep healthcare free at the point of use for those who cannot otherwise afford it, I see no reason whatsoever that this should be delivered by a state bureaucracy.Your moaning about prescriptions being free? there might not be an NHS the way privitisation is going. Labour started it.... and the tories are going to finish it off.
That, however, is not Conservative, Lib Dem, Labour or Coalition policy. Their policy is simply to include some private elements in the NHS when it makes service-delivery more efficient. This principle has been broadly accepted since the 1950s.Last edited by L i b; 03-03-2012 at 09:31. -

but like i said im gona give the benefit of the doubt that they cant understand my thick scouse accent -
Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots?Ah right, I was trying to work that out myself, though he was just a strong nationalist who refused to acknowledge the border. To be honest all the southerners i've met have been dead on and good banter, that said southern GAA lads do have that reputation(Original post by kopite493)

Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots?Your a Tory. Well that explains everything. No point in arguing with you then. Your political views will ruin this country, or what's left of it. You put a flag up because you like the design? ha-ha what a pathetic stance. I like the design on the swastika but I don't go around with it in my name. Flags are not there to be pretty, they exist to represent a nation or group of people.(Original post by L i b)

That is like saying you are a conservative because they are the colour blue. What a joke of an excuse for having the Malta flag up.
Face it man your all over the place. Your a Tory, like Malta and apparently a self proclaimed scot yet you have a clear St Georges cross.
Stop deliberately trying to be different for attention and make your mind up on where you stand on matters.
EDIT: to add insult to injury your name is LIB. I mean seriously. Surely that does no stand for the Liberal Democrats. Your a tory with LIB in your name? seriously you lose all credibility with your constant side switching.Last edited by 1tartanarmy; 03-03-2012 at 17:08. -
Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots? That's the Royal Navy's flag. I'd expect people to know that.(Original post by 1tartanarmy)

The Conservatives are more liberal than the Lib Dems much of the time. Either way, that is certainly not what it means, no.EDIT: to add insult to injury your name is LIB. I mean seriously. You just sound like a childish hyper nationalist, "can't like this flag because you are SCOTTISH, must fly Saltire etc"
ergh -
Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots?
Why can Tories or Scots (not sure which one you are gunning for here) not like Malta out of interest?
If the SNP are full of Nazi-esque busy bodies who hassle people for liking the flag of Malta, then god I am scared!Last edited by Cyanohydrin; 03-03-2012 at 17:27. -
Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots? This reminds me of when I visited a mate in Glasgow - they were singing the Scottish national anthem and one of his housemates was angry that the Irish and English ones in the house to sing it. He told me to "shut up and Sing something Irish" lol(Original post by 1tartanarmy)

Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots?Northern England? Why? Just another layer of government to be honest?(Original post by The_Male_Melons)
It will be good. I do think the North does need devolution.
How would it be devolved? Same way as Scotland, where would it be based? -
Re: What would happen if the North got an independence referendum like the Scots?Scotland doesn't have a national anthem, nor does Britain have an official one either..(Original post by That Bearded Man)

There are like seven serious contenders for Scottish national anthem.
