Third Year English Literature Dissertation (English Degree)
I'm a second year English literature undergraduate and have been stuck for 10 days about a dissertation topic (for next year - but the proposal has to be submitted in 2 weeks) and because I saw some posts about dissertations before I thought I'd just come here for advice (never done this sort of thing before) because it's stressing me out! I want to make sure everything is done correctly etc. for the best chance of getting a good mark.

Basically I'm torn between two topics (see below...)

My main worries (apart from which topic to choose) are:

    - originality: there is so much critical literature on the two authors who I'd be comparing (Byron and Wilde), albeit separately, that I'm worried I'll not be able to find my own original voice (plus the fact that Oscar Wilde seems to be done every year). I just feel like everything has been written about these two authors!

    - The other topic is a literary study concerning often unstudied Scottish dialect poetry from the early 19th Century...it would seem more original but I have never studied it, I've read the poems in my spare time but that's it; of course it's something I'd like to explore but is there time to explore, is it beneficial to choose a dissertation topic in which you already know the texts/poetry very well.

    - Worried I might not have the skills needed to analyse *dialect* poems which have never really been close-read before (there is some critical literature on the poetry as a whole but not really specific criticism on single poems - although there are a few exceptions).

    - My other main worry is about forming a clear argument in my proposal/title

Super stressed - I've been emailing lots of people (I feel like I've been pestering to be honest! Oh dear...) so I just decided to come here and discuss my woes lol!

It's been a while since you posted and nobody's replied yet...maybe you should check out MarkedbyTeachers.com, TSR's sister site. It has the largest library of essays in the UK.

They've got over 181,000+ coursework, essays, homeworks etc.. all written by GCSE, A Level, University and IB students across all topics. You get access either by publishing some of your own work, or paying £4.99 for a month's access. Both ways give you unlimited access to all of the essays.

All their documents are submitted to Turnitin anti-plagiarism software, so it can't be misused, and the site's used by hundreds of thousands of UK teachers and students.

What's more, you can take a look around the site and preview the work absolutely free. Click here to find out more...
