Ah that sucks! Weird that there isn't any advanced maths or something though, I know a lot of uni's do catch up courses if you haven't done any further! Haha, wild summer it sounds like!

Well the higher courses only last a year so I'm doing Advanced Higher maths next year, but it still doen't do quite as far as further maths as far as I know, which kinda sucks :/

Hello there I already applied to Oxford for 2012 entry but got rejected post-interviews (for Oriental Studies-Chinese). If I get good grades at my bac (I'm French), I'm certainly going to re-apply to Oxford. I hope that my gap year to China will help in a way ...
Any other Oriental studies applicants ? For Chinese ?

A gap year in China? Awesome!
What are you planning to do there?

Thanks ! I'm going to attend Tsinghua University in Beijing. I'll do a one-year Chinese language program. Then I'd like to take HSK 4 or 5 at the end of the year ... (I'm taking the HSK 3 in a few weeks). I'm also going to join an association for cultural cooperation between France and China. And, of course, I want to travel a bit, immerse myself in the culture, etc ... can't wait !

So I'm gonna join in the fun here. Although my situation is a little bit of a strange one compared to all you lot..

I'm a PPE finalist who will be applying for Senior Status Law in October. How exciting.

Just wondering about the application, I know Cambridge ask for the UMS marks for AS, does Oxford operate under the same scheme?

No. If you have any particularly outstanding UMS marks though you should get them mentioned in your reference

Work experience really doesn't affect your application - extra-curricular stuff is particularly irrelevant for maths. Just do *some* (not necessarily much) outside reading on more advanced level maths but just make sure you actually understand what work you're doing now to the best you can.
Indeed, I know some successful maths applicants who I'm not sure have ever opened a book.

I'm Scottish, so no We don't even have any sort of equivalent, which is terribly unfortunate because I love maths! I haven't even done a great amount of background reading, but hey, that's what summer is for! Right? :P
AH covers almost all the pure maths that's in FM (except for hyperbolic functions and Taylor Series, if I remember correctly). Would your school let you self-teach or give you any help with AH mechanics (applied maths)? That could be worth doing if you were able to.

Just a note: because FM is often a choice of modules, some boards do go beyond most school maths (Fp4, m4, m5, etc.) and are really what you study as an undergraduate.

It's probably worth getting hold of one of the specifications and just filling in any blanks. I'm sure the scottish system covers almost everything, but a little extra knowledge never goes amiss.

(You could also do AEA maths for a formal "hey look, this is how good I am" exam). The AEA is tricky, not due to the maths, but due to the fact you need a very high mark, and a lot of marks are for "style", which is difficult to be sure of.

I'll be sure to ask if that's possible when we change timetable in June!

I will see about this also, but I'm not sure how flexible my school would be in setting this up, because they're pretty incompetent.

In the UCAS application form I see that, in my certificate (Italian - we have a 5 years certificate), I can type only "pending" modules and predicted grades. Does it mean that Oxford will consider me only by my predicted grades, personal statement and reference?

Just booked for Corpus Christi for the open day. I still have no idea if I'd prefer a smaller or larger college so I thought I may as well have a look at the opposite end of the spectrum (also booked for New). Also, Corpus' webpage for English is lovely.

I was at the Oriental Studies open day today!
And I met a couple of other people who were interested in the course, but I forgot to write down their names, so I can't contact them. d'oh
