Re: What happens if you don't make your grades
All the people that meet their offers will get a guaranteed place. Then all the people who missed their firm offer at another uni but met their offer for this uni will get a guaranteed place. Then if there are any spare places they will give these out to the people who didn't meet their offer but weren't far off.
If your firm and insurance will not take you on, you go into clearing where UCAS finds random unis over the UK that have spare places. If they cannot find any that you are happy with then bad luck.
Instead of just anonymously negging me, presumably because you think I am wrong in what I said or just out of aloof disapproval, why don't you just say what you disagree with?Last edited by oh_1993; 29-02-2012 at 19:30. -

Re: What happens if you don't make your grades
Not necessarily,as many popular/competitive courses often haven't got any places to go into clearing. But often lower ranking unis will have the same course but with a very low entry requirement. I'm looking into marine biology a couple of places ask for Cs but the better places are A/B. BUT the university of west scotland (which i've got nothing against) only asks for DD, one has to be biology and the other can be absolutely anything!
And unconditional offers tend to not actually be unconditional, you can have EE or EEE but that if you're yet to finish your a-levels. Other people who've finished their exams can get unconditionals with all sorts of grades, especially if experiences makes up for only average grades.
Plus I don't know why oh_1993 got negged, their answer was correct . . .Last edited by Clare~Bear; 24-07-2012 at 12:32. -
Re: What happens if you don't make your gradesSome people get offers of EE from Christ's College, Cambridge so it is possible even to get into Cambridge with DD. (This rule may have changed now at Cambridge.) This in no way guarantees that you will definitely get into a university with those grades. The majority of people with those grades probably do not.(Original post by JayTe)
So, basically any body can get in to University, aslong as they have grades equal to a minimum of a D, for example?
If they have given you a conditional offer but you don't meet it, they have spare places and they still think you are suitable for the course they will more than likely let you in anyway.
Thing is, many universities will have no spare places and even the ones that do will only have a few spares that they will give to people who narrowly missed their offers. If you have an offer of AAA and you get BBB for example, it is very unlikely that you will get in.
If you have an offer of AAB and you get A*A*C + high grade in Cambridge admissions test you will likely be first on their list to get in if they have spare places but they have an obligation to let everyone in who meets their offers. Rarely I think do universities take on extra students, they have to pay a fine to the government for this.
I have been told this by both a Professor at Warwick and an admissions staff at York. Stop negging me. It's true.Last edited by oh_1993; 11-03-2012 at 20:28. -

Plus when a course goes into clearing, I don't know if there's still a minimum requirement other than just passing. Obviously a course asking for As and maybe a B or two isn't going to want people who got EEE so they might lower it to CCC for clearing or something
can anyone confirm???

Re: What happens if you don't make your gradesEE means Entrance Exam. And they don't do that anymore, as I understand it.(Original post by oh_1993)
Some people get offers of EE from Christ's College, Cambridge so yes.Last edited by vandub; 01-03-2012 at 11:11. -
Re: What happens if you don't make your gradesI thought it meant EE as in grades EE because they were matriculation offers used to take the pressure off the final A-level exams. That's what I read anyway, sorry if I'm wrong, and seriously we need to stop negging on this thread; these guys are posting some really useful advice, they don't deserve it!(Original post by vandub)

Re: What happens if you don't make your gradesI may well be wrong. I only thought the way I did because in that case it'd just make sense to give an unconditional, surely? But I suppose EE would mean the student would actually have to stay in school til the end whereas an unconditional wouldn't. Not too knowledgeable on the subject, so I'll take your word on it.(Original post by Larry31)

Re: What happens if you don't make your gradesIt is definitely 2 E grades, I was told this by the senior admissions tutor at Christ's College. They have done away with it now I think, they used to give them to around 1/3 of people they give offers to, basically as unconditional offers because if you get AA at AS (which virtually all Cambridge applicants get) then you have already met the offer. I think there is a lower limit requirement so they just cheated it this way. Given to students who are brilliant at interview and have an outstanding academic record (probably 4+ A*s predicted) so basically it is an unconditional for outstanding Christ's applicants.(Original post by vandub)

What would happen, if, for example, you had an offer of BBB from a university to study sociology (for example), but you got CCC? -

No, if there are spare places they will likely give these out to people who missed their offers but are still suitable for the course. They might still get in. Highly unlikely though with a grade below in 3 subjects. -
