Obviously I appreciate them and everything they do for me all year round which is why I think it's nice for them to have a day that's just for them and with that comes cards and gifts that don't need to be expensive. It's the thought that counts, if I was completely broke and couldn't even afford a card for my mum then I'd make her one. It's not really about money, it's about the effort.

I was in this situation last year, made my dad a card that said I loved him and stuff; my family still try to make me feel bad for not buying him a present (with what money!?) last year. I spent 2 hours making that card for him; it's definitely about the money here.

I think that's unfair. If I made my mum a card and she could see I'd spend time and effort making it look pretty and everything then I know she'd like it better than a shop bought one because it's so much more personal. If my mum wasn't always on bloody diets then I'd make her a cake or something lol but if I did that at the moment when she's trying to lose weight for the summer I think she'd kill me!

People expect stuff on Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day...

I find if you surprise them with something on an unexpected day it means a lot more and is much more appreciated.

my mum has recently started a jewellery making course with her best friend (my aunt) so she wants a bead board for it, so my sister will probably buy her that or some beads and ill give her money towards it. on mothers day my mum, her husband and my nan are going to my sisters and her fiance's for dinner and ill be joining them. as usual, they'll cook for us all and ill provide dessert, which will probably involve baking a cake - i did one for my mums birthday last year and it was a sponge cake with a layer of buttercream in the middle, then covered it with white ready-to-roll icing. i put a happy birthday plaque thing in middle then decorated it with yellow, pink and white wafer daisies and piped some swirly green stems on it and then finished it off by fastening ribbon round the base. it was very pretty so will do something similar for mothers day i think as she really appreciated it and was quite impressed at the effort i put in for her.

The biggest bunch of flowers I can get from Sainsbury's (I used to do Interflora but the bunches are tiny for how much you pay and they don't last very long), a card, and I'm taking her out for a meal on Mother's Day (well, I say that, I'm paying for her meal and my Dad's paying for the rest because as an impoverished student, I can't afford a lot!).

Last year I made a box of mothery things which she loved but I've decided to go more traditional this year.

Who says people don't? And besides, what's to stop you buying your Mum/Dad/husband/boyfriend something on X day of the year just because a lot of other people recognise it as a special day as well?

Since starting uni (and therefore being poor) it has become a tradition where I bake my mum a cake. She loves it so it's all good

This did not even cross my mind until now. Just looked up the date and luckily I will be home then so I think I'll bake her a cake, make dinner and maybe get her a bottle of wine or two.

My mum has to go away quite a lot and, although we talk on the phone, she says she would miss me less if she could see me too. So I've made a little case for her to keep a travel-size photo of me in and I'm embroidering it with her favourite poem to make it extra special. I would do this anyway, though; Mother's Day is just an excuse for me.
