    Free Media Bill 2012

    A bill to define and inhibit the use of suppression orders (so-called “super-injunctions”) which pose a potential threat to the freedom of speech.

    Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows—

    1. Suppression order
    (1) A suppression order is an injunction that restrains the media or the involved parties from publishing any information relevant to a particular legal case.
    (2) It shall not be granted under any conditions.

    2. Commencement, extent and short title
    (1) This Act comes into force on the day after the date of Royal assent.
    (2) This Act extends to the whole of the United Kingdom.
    (3) This Act may be cited as the Free Media Act 2012.
