All the ones I have seen seem pretty price,

However - Avoid UNITE house at all costs

my adivce - don't apply to goldney 'with en suite' or you may end up in UNITE
I thought Unite House underwent refurbishment in 2009. May I know why avoid Unite House ?

Is it because of poor management or facility ?

    Thank you.

There's one good thing about unite and that is that it is really close to the uni and town. This is pretty handy as i can get up later and never have to worry about getting taxis on nights out, unlike those in stoke bishop.

the down side of it though are

    1) there is no accommodation bar or communal area, so the atmosphere is pretty bad.

    2) the 'square' in the centre of the building feels really soviet and nobody ever really hangs out there. The plants etc on the website just don't exist but they didrecently put in some picnic benches. Nobody really wants to sit out there with hundreds of eyes looking out at you anyway.

    3) The kitchens are pretty bad compared to those in other halls, like in goldney the rubbish is collected from each flat and is organised for recycling etc... here there is 1 bin provided and you can deal with the rest yourself. They also have 2 hobs vs 1 here.

    4) Building has a bad smell in most corridors and flats that you stop noticing after a while but always when coming in from outside (and makes you worry that your clothes might smell like this to other people! )

    5) It's really loud at night being right next to the O2 and a bunch of bars etc, also with the 'square structure' of it you get drunk people congregating there shouting about when back from clubbing which is really annoying when you have 9a.ms.

    6) No wireless (unless you buy and set up your own ofc), but most other halls have it now.

    7) situated in a 'hole' such that every direction you would wanna go... i.e uni or the good part of town you will have the choice of going up a very long hill or a very steep hill.

    8) high proportion of quite reclusive internationals and postgraduates contributes to worse atmosphere.

as for avoiding this probably best just to not go for only the most highly sought after accommodations or put 'importance' on things like being in clifton/stoke bishop if you can still do that on the form.

I put 'having an ensuite' and not stoke bishop on mine... hence this happened!

Why do they say it's better? Does it have anything to do with being a vet?

Honestly, get an ensuite, whatever you want. Don't listen to people. Don't even listen to me.

    ... wait a minute

No seriously, if you really want to get catered, you know that they have catered en-suite accommodations, right?

Thank you so much for the detailed explanations.

I'd like to ask for your advice to the following questions:

How do you rank the following halls :

    University hall
    (a) 33 Colston Street
    (b) Woodland Court
    (c) The Hawthorns

    Private hall :
    (a) CRM Holly Court Studios
    (b) CRM King Square Studios
    (c) CRM Studios 58

    (1) In terms of noise , the above halls' surrounding area and environment.
    (2) In terms of convenience, and not too much "up / down hill" and general amenities.

    Thank you

I don't have a very good knowledge of any of these sorry. I've never heard people complaining about any of them though.

Colston street is pretty near to unite, but it's generally considered to be quite a lot better all round.

I think Woodland and Hawthorn would be generally considered quite quiet residences but I've never seen been to them & don't know anyone from them ;z

Hmm I did look at the ensuite+catered accommodation, but didnt think it was that good :s

    Is Durdham actually really dull?
I know people say that it depends on the people, but it seems to be really dull every year...

    It won't be dull if I'm there.

I'm wondering that too. It's quite strange how some of them end up being the 'boring halls' when the population changes almost completely every year. Personally I think I'd prefer to be in a quiet hall, cos you can always start a party but you can't always tone one down. Plus Durdham is quite near the rest of the Stoke Bishop halls, so even if you end up with people who rather knitting(or whatever..) to going out, you're not exactly isolated.

I'm quite introverted though anyway, so I wouldn't mind if it were boring.

Durdham is pretty quiet yes, basically its quieter atmosphere is self-fulfilling and its natural that people who are more bothered by wanting an en-suite turn out to be less social. The big party halls are pretty much Hiatt Baker/Badock where it's all about going-out, Wills/Churchill are reasonably similar, probably a bit less-clubbing and a bit posher. University Hall is a bit dire, try and avoid it if possible. Definitely avoid Unite House/Hawthorns, everyone I've ever met who went there has said they hated it due to the dire social life/experience/reclusive and weird foreign students.

Colston Hall isn't too bad, bit quiet I've heard but depends what you're looking for.

If i put Bristol as my insurance choice and end up going there, does anyone know which accommodation I'd likely end up in?

They don't collect the rubbish from goldney flats (sadly), but we do have a variety of recycling bins in the kitchen, which we have to take out ourselves (however the bin area is at most 50m from any of the flat entrances, so its not really a problem with the exception of no-one wanting to do it due to 'bin juice')

The halls in Clifton area (Goldney, Clifton Hill House, Manor, etc.) are closer to the uni (about 10 mins walk), and near a lot of (relatively expensive) shops. On the other hand, the halls in Stoke Bishop (Wills, Durdham, etc.) are about a 30 min bus ride away, but apparently have a better student life because the halls are much closer together. Then there are student houses right in the uni, they're good because of location, but maybe not so good in terms of community because they don't get a JCR (though events are organized by a similar group, called Orbital).

I'm a future student, so my information may not be completely accurate; however, this is what I've gathered through my research. Good luck!
30 minute bus ride? You're having a laugh. It's a 30 minute walk to the main Uni buildings and between a 7 and 15 min bus ride (traffic on white ladies). Some of the uni houses do have JCRs too.

UH is where the party is traditionally at, but the standard of accommodation isn't great. First year really doesn't matter for most people though so unless you're an absolute arse, go for UH.

Just curious seeing that I'm looking into Studios 58 as well. Have you had any additional information on S58?

I was offered an accommodation in Chantry but with all the comments and the brief view from Google Map, I'm not sure whether I'd take that offer What's more ... at this stage it might be rather late to reapply for Woodland. Any advice?
