Which Cardiff accommodation is best?

Is there any real difference between the taly accomodations? I keep hearing that south is best, court is really unsocial and north is kinda unsocial and run down.

Just dont want to end up regretting my choice of either paying more and it being less social or paying less and it being less social haha!

DevonSun; if you read the comments above, they're pretty spot on. From my experiences over three years of uni;

Taly South (lived here)

Pros: Extremely social, reasonable rooms, theres always 5 or 6 'party houses'
Cons: Noisy which can be a pain if its exam time. Be prepared to wake up to mess in the halls, over the stairs, up the walls etc etc

Taly North

Pros: A bit more relaxed, people tend to hang out with flatmates a bit more rather than socialising around flats/houses, closest to tesco
Cons: House parties tend to be a bit smaller as more out of the way, rooms feel more cramped and Talybronx is an apt name! Also furthest from town

Taly Court

Pros: Really nice accomodation, more relaxed than South as well, closest to town
Cons: A bit less social, further from bar etc, furthest from tesco which is a b***h when you're carrying heavy shopping

So basically, South if you like to party, North if you want more relaxed and friendly and Court if you want more comfort.

If you wanted a larger room, cheaper rent and less noise than Talybont then Cartwright Court would be perfect. It's a shared ensuite, but that hasn't been a problem for me. 15 minute walk to the Humanities/law/politics buildings too, so not too far away. Bit of a hidden gem really, as everyone tends to go for Talybont. 5 minutes walk away from Tesco/Iceland/Home Bargains/ Spar too, which is handy.

Hmm, really considering Cartwright now, as I dont find Taly appealing, the rooms are tiny!
What do you think of the others- Aberconway, Roy jenkins, Senghennydd.. I still want to be somewhere fun! Just not as loud as Taly.

hey,
i'm doing med. i know all the med stuff isn't exactly in campus so will probs be looking for accomm near the med stuff, but still near the town and the shops.
plus i want an en-suite, a large(ish) room and sociable (but not messy or rowdy)
i know these are a lot of demands (i realise that these will cost more- already broke don't know how i'm gonna afford it). i'm willing to compromise on a few. any ideas????

I've heard a lot of med students go to University Hall as its near the med stuff. Looks quite nice too.
Good luck with your decision.

Taly North is probably a better bet for a medic as it's near the Heath and fairly close to Biomed no? Uni halls is near Heath Park but miles from anywhere else.

North is quieter than South and during exam times others will be working as well so it should be quiet enough. I've heard uni halls is similar to taly in terms of parties though so if you really want a lot of quiet time then you might want to look at others. There's tons of medics in my house in North so it's definitely manageable .

Thanx for the help. i have to be honest and say that i hate walking (i have been known to take the bus to go about 1 minute up the hill- bad i know). seeing as i am that lazy when it comes to walking do you think taly north is within a good walking distance/cycling distance (might bring my bike as its faster to get around)?

also got to ask, is taly north really that bad in terms of being rundown. if i was in somewhere really rundown all year, i think it could get me down. basically, is it really that bad or is it more of a "shabby chic" situation?

thanx in advance (i am such a pain with these que's)

I'm a fast walker so it doesn't bother me too much, I can walk to lectures in business/law buildings in about 15 mins but it's hugely irritating when I have to go in for a 50 minute lecture then have a break for a while, which I'll usually come home for meaning I have to walk it several times a day, and me being lazy I often skip lectures. Doing medicine though I'd imagine you'll generally be gone all day so it's not as bad. A lot of people here cycle, so that's a possibility, not sure about the Heath but to biomed you basically just go through south and court and then in a straight line down Colum road. On nights out we usually go a quid each and get a taxi into town.

As for the quality, only the taly north reduced houses are a bit shabby afaik, you have the option to just select a regular ensuite, which are the newer houses adjacent to the astroturf, and they're basically the same as what you get in south.

Ooh they look nice, how come I've never heard of Cartwright Court before?
Is it as social as Taly South? I can't really be bothered with the whole going out every other night of the week dressing up as a nerd thing so that would actually be a bonus.

Am I the only one who is liking the sound of Taly North? That's exactly what I'd want. And come on people, it's not even run down, take a look at some of Swanseas accommodation...

It's as social, in that you will still make friends and go out. The difference is in Taly South you'll be frequently woken up as nights out, I found, were very frequent for the vast majority of those around me. I think the exam period was the worst for me this January, getting woken up every morning around 4-5ish. So I switched to Cartwright for a quieter scene where I could actually work in peace and still have socialising. Couldn't recommend it enough, it's a great balance between social and peaceful.

After the Talybont accommodations what rank would you put the others?

Im kind of thinking about the Talybont reduced becaus its en suite, and saw a video on you tube, and I could see myself being ok in one of those. Cartwright Court seems nice too. I think I'd prefer the one bathroom per 2 people situation. Then Senghetto is ok. I guess I'd be happy to stay in either really. As long as we all have fun and flatmates are ok. And they'll be plenty to do!
Anyone got any info regarding my top three? Senghennydd Hall, Gordon Hall and Colum Hall?

I'm leaving Talybont to the party goers!
Taly court - Nicest by quite a bit, rooms are massive, bathrooms are damn good (proper shower cubicle) kitchen is nice, and you have a carpeted living roomish part of the kitchen. People here are a bit more quiet and some a little more posh as it's the most expensive you could say. Decent parties when you want them, quiet when you're trying to sleep.

Taly South (Living here atm) - Rooms smaller than court, bathrooms fine except the showers are kinda wet rooms so there's no cubicle so having a shower will drench the whole bathroom floor(unless you stay perfectly still :P) Kitchens are fine, enough space. Epic parties when you want them, but seeing as there seems to be constant parties here it's sometimes hard to sleep when you want to. Also south has a silverfish infestation so they appear sometimes in your room (literally every room I know has seen at least 1) but if you're on the ground floor you have thousands of students walking past each day/night which would be annoying as yanno windows and all and noisy (luckily I'm on top floor :P)

Taly North- Known as the bronx, decent rooms, poor bathrooms, kitchen is a bit small, looks poor on the outside, but is closest to the sports complex and tesco, but furthest from town/uni. Also the cheapest out of the 3 but for what it's worth I'd recommend paying the little more for south. Wouldn't pick this one unless it was your third choice. But yeah from what I know flats are pretty social.

I wouldn't worry about having a boring flat. Every flat in my house has people I'd happily live with, and I spend quite a bit of time with the opposite flat so it doesn't take much to just walk to other flats if yours does happen to be a bit boring.
