I found this site to be really useful, and answers all FAQs about the process. The top link works best.

So, basically, my question is what happens? What happens in the interviews? what sort of Questions do they ask? Is the A* that is required specified? Are the two A's that are required specified? What is the Special Access scheme?Just to add something to that excellent recommendation: the University's really open about the applications process, and they've got nothing to hide! They put up loads of information 'straight from the horse's mouth', so there's no need to go to any private companies advertising some 'secret formula' for success. I'd also mention the University's own Applicant Toolkit, which is particularly useful for interview preparation. The Students' Union also has a brilliant Alternative Prospectus, which is well worth a look.(Original post by oneperson)

I'll have a go at answering your two other questions. They do sometimes specify subjects to get an A* in, although not always. (I've never heard of the A grades being subject-specific, although I suppose they can be considered as such if you're doing three A-Levels and get an A*AA offer with an A* in a certain subject.) The Special Access Scheme is being replaced for the current admissions round by the new Extenuating Circumstances Form. See the link for more information!
If you've got questions about it, or any of the above, feel free to reply, and / or get in contact with the Central Admissions Office. They're very friendly people - trust me! - and are more than happy to help out.
I hope this is useful! -
Re: Cambridge Application Process?
That's good advice, I should add that it would be good to check the colleges own pages of the ones you are thinking of applying to. Some of them have slight differences for the same subject, such as whether they want work sending off or not. Also the time period of interview dates for each subject may be up already so you know to keep those dates free for interview (hopefully).
