Re: Milton Friedman - A genuine hero
After Estonia escaped the iron Curtain their Prime Minister based their whole economic policy on his book "Capitalism And Freedom". They had the highest growth out of all former soviet countries, the highest standard of living, and highest wages up until the global crash AND joining the EU. People never seem to bring that up, oh and Hong Kong. His meeting with Pinochet which lasted less than 3 hours is always highlighted, funny that afterwards he sent pinochet an angry letter condemning all his actions.
He was a genuine hero. I mean they guy had no flicker of arrogance, elitism and snobbery. He never lied, he would make some generalisations in his TV debates to mainstream viewers, but he never intentionally did anything disingenuous. His economics theory is well respected, he has a whole school of though based on him, a whole section of Economists led by him, "the chicago boys" and is even respected by Keyensians King paul krugman, who admires his theoretical work.
Some people hate him for entirely the wrong reasons. I was genuinly upset when I saw that video of someone hitting him with a pie, in 1998, when he was 86 year old, a 5ft 0 man with no security at 86 years old.
I mean his ideas regarding income tax, drug views, anti-war, pro-race equality, school vouchers schemes etc etc are some of his most pro-progressive policies which the haters tend to overlook.
I don't understand in anyway how some could think he was a fascist, or at the very least a fascist sympthatiser.
If any TSRians have only just discovered that someone on a leftist forum point out that Friedman (freedom) was not what you think he is I will provide any links, forums, books, essay's. I have an obsessive collection.Last edited by prog2djent; 05-03-2012 at 10:50. -
Re: Milton Friedman - A genuine heroPeople on the left can be so violent and aggressive. Yet if they start attacking innocent people in the name of being a commie bastard who does not like free trade, apparently some people see it as a heroic act against 'the man'.(Original post by prog2djent)
