The Hunger Games movie
Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

Re: The Hunger Games movieI agree, the small details ruined it. My friends' think it's funny how i'm so hung up on Buttercup.(Original post by aspirinpharmacist)
Yeah, I would have liked to see more of the interviews as well, and they should at least have done Katniss's properly. I wanted to see her giggle because it's so out of character and it shows how bloody scared she actually is. Plus, for some reason I'm irritated that they never mentioned the lamb stew. But I'm glad at least that they showed more of Peeta's interview. Yeah, I could tell either, which was frustrating. I wanted a proper look. I wasn't sure either. And district...is it 8? I can't remember where Johanna is from, but she says that their tributes have all been dressed as trees for 20 years with her stylist. I didn't see any trees. Come on people, details! If they're not going to do it properly...
And I don't believe they do, but I they'll have bets on the tribute they think will win, so sponsoring that tribute will increase their chances of winning and thus increase the chances of them winning the bet.
I have a question though. If using the arena as a weapon is considered a slap in the face for the Capitol (like Haymitch in the Quarter Quell) then why didn't the boy from district 3 get in more trouble for using the mines around the plates? Surely they're not intended as weapons for the tributes, merely a way of preventing them from stepping off the plates too early. So using it would be showing up the Capitol, wouldn't it? Just something I wondered.
I think it would only have been a problem if he won? & They probably knew with Cato and co. that he'd end up dead anyway. -
Re: The Hunger Games movieBut he might not. After all, Johanna apparently wins the games by pretending to be a weakling, he could have used similar tactics. I see where you're coming from, I just found it interesting. And no, I totally understand why you're hung up on Buttercup. It's a bloody ginger cat! It's like they don't read the books at all. I might become a film producer purely so I can do something that pays attention to details!(Original post by Mojojojo)

Re: The Hunger Games movie
There where a lot of things that just... irked me.
For example, that fact that Katniss instantaneously found water.
The camera work was just, atrocious.
The cornucopia just looked... stupid.
It was never made clear that Peeta was in the alliance in order to save her
They didn't portray that Peeta was in love with Katniss, yet she was pretending to be in "love" with him.
When Rue got stabbed, she was just talking like nothing happened O_o I was expecting her to be wrenching in agony and i-can-barley-speak whisper "can you sing to me"
The ending was rushed. I was kinda looking forward to the Peeta, Katniss confrontation. Which didn't happen.
Other than that i enjoyed it lol
I loved the bit when Katniss heard the cannon and thought Peeta had died, and then they ran into each other and hugged like crazy. That was cute. And dear, the reaping had me holding in my breath. That was amazing. Prim was such a great actress. I think Josh was a perfect peeta, and gale was pretty irrelevent. He was in the movie for like, 5 minutes.

Re: The Hunger Games movie
I loved it! I thought it was a really good adaptation from the book.
There are, however, some things I didn't like- but they were quite minimal tbh. For example, I really wished they had made President Snow more creepy, everything about him was so sinister in the book..I think I remember Katniss describing him having the smell of blood on his breath? But I suppose they couldn't really depict that in the film.
I thought Jennifer Lawrence was brilliant as Katniss, I wasn't sure about her when I first saw the cast list but I think she's just an amazing actress, and I think she really carried the entire movie. I loved Gale in the books but the film just made him so..insignificant, which is a shame. I disliked Peeta in the books but movie Peeta is so adorbale. AND HAYMITCH OHGOD! I LOVE HAYMITCH I thought Woody Harrelson did a very good Haymitch, although I do wish he was drunker and nastier in his smart and tactically careless way.

Re: The Hunger Games movieThe capitol likes to hurt people by killing the ones they love, so the boy who rewired the mines, if he won would've been punished like Haymitch was by killing the people he's close to i expect.(Original post by aspirinpharmacist)

It's not hard to get a ginger cat is it? Even if it wasn't mashed up nosed and wonky eyed. But a black/white cat that seemed more like a kitten?!
Everyone's complaining about the camera work, i didn't even notice! Did you? -
Re: The Hunger Games movieGood point. I just wondered. And no, they managed to find something for Crookshanks in Harry Potter, and I've seen actual cats that look the way I imagine Buttercup, so it wouldn't be hard to get one! It's a stupid little thing yet it shouldn't have been overlooked.(Original post by Mojojojo)

Really? I though the camera work was quite clever actually. Particularly when she volunteers for Prim.Last edited by aspirinpharmacist; 26-03-2012 at 21:13. -

I get they were trying to show the frenzied nature of both scenes but they just went over the top. It actually hurt my eyes to watch. -
Re: The Hunger Games movie
Josh Robert Thompson has been making some great comments on Facebook about this film

This new trailer for "The Hunger Games" looks incredible. http://youtu.be/-ceegnWSENQBattle Royale was a very good film indeedOk. Just kidding. Seriously, here's "The Hunger Games" trailer. http://youtu.be/Y-T7yPJVvXw
I might be watching Hunger Games sometime soon. -
Re: The Hunger Games movieI just meant in my opinion I didnt understand what was going on, I didnt mean to put it down as it is a good film and probably book. I was just saying that I didnt understand the concept as well as I did with the hunger games.(Original post by Phalanges)
While I agree with your main argument that we shouldn't judge it based purely on it's originality of thought (there's myriad other films that could claim the concept before Battle Royale, anyway), you're being very reductive about a film/book that is just as insightful a critique on Japanese culture as Hunger Games is on western culture. -
Re: The Hunger Games movie
The film was never going to top the book. The books are so detailed im surprised they managed to include so much and still make the film awesome.
I mean give the director some credit, the book is written in first person, so alot of what you read is Katnis' thoughts.
I thought the idea of having Ceaser flickerman commentating and explaining things like the tracker jackers was genius.
Also he just seemed like a cracking guy (considering he lives in the evil capitol). -
Re: The Hunger Games movie
I don't know if it was mention but a couple of things i was mad about in the movie
the fact on how Katniss found the mockingjay pin? they cut out the mayor of 12's daughter which to me seemed like a important character in the book.
in the movie they never mentioned the force field on the roof, which plays a large role in catching fire and is revealed that's how haymitch won his games.
the ending is nothing like the book, peeta gets his leg amputated and katniss gets her hearing that she lost from the explosion fixed on the ship.
they never mentioned the wolves having the eyes of the fallen tributes.
I know not everything from the book is going to be in the movie, but these are some small details that should have been. -
Re: The Hunger Games movieTo be fair, you do get a decent 5 second shot of the force field on the roof towards the end and it is seen throughout the film. I guess since it plays a big part in the second book you'll see more of it in the second film?(Original post by Shibby1507)

Re: The Hunger Games movieI guess your right, all the night scenes in the arena did show a force feild or dome in the sky.(Original post by Stray_talk)

- If everyone in the Capitol dresses in odd clothing, including the Gamemakers, why didn't the computer people releasing things in the game look odd?
- Rue and Katniss had barely any conversation. There's almost no reason given for her to help Katniss, Katniss doesn't mention her sister and most annoyingly of all, they don't talk about music so Rue asking Katniss to sing for her seemed a bit random.
- How on earth are roman soldiers related to rock quarries?
- Katniss is meant to have a good ear for music. She doesn't whistle the same tune as Rue. You can almost see Rue going, "Eh, whatever, let's just go with this then."

I loved the bit when Katniss heard the cannon and thought Peeta had died, and then they ran into each other and hugged like crazy. That was cute. And dear, the reaping had me holding in my breath.
