It can be a sign of being unfit. Most people of my age experience this because we don't do much (if any) exercise. Your body needs to work harder to keep up with little things, so is demanding more oxygen.

Other signs include weak muscles or aching muscles after minimal activity, mood swings, insomnia or poor sleeping habits, and chronic health problems

If you're concerned about it start taking a few walks in your spare time, or go out riding a bicyle for light exercise. You can also take up a sport or a class if you like.

Maybe a sign of a weak cardiovascular system. I used to have the same problem, (I was a little cubby tho) so I started working out, going to hte gym and doing cardio for 1 hour 3-4 times a week. If you take up more exercise it may help

That sounds like a massive problem. I mean, what the hell are you going to do with a woman if a flight of stairs is difficult? No joke, this is serious.

Get some good trainers, start running. Best way to good cardiovascular health. Swimming's good too.

Do you ever exercise? No? Probably unfit then aren't you.

How old are you? If you are under the age of 80 then there is no excuse for getting tired walking up some stairs...

I hate hiccups because I get a stitch in the side, is that a sign of unfitness?

If this shortness of breath is causing you to stop half-way up the stairs or is interrupting other daily activities, might be worth dropping into your GP to discuss it with him.

Shortness of breath is a symptom of anaemia, so worth getting checked out. I've just found out I'm anaemic and this is a symptom I noticed, along with general tiredness and excessively achey muscles after exercise among others. I was advised by my doctor to only exercise moderately (not stop, just not too much!) as your body takes longer to recover because there's less oxygen available and so it's possible to put yourself at risk of injury, as well as the recovery time being a lot longer (for example, after a run of only a few K my muscles will hurt for a few days). Probably not the case for you but so easy to fix if that is the problem
Shortness of breath is a symptom for LOADS of other things as well - so OP if yo uget short of breath, don't get it in your head you're anaemic, might not be true. Go and tell your doctor.

At a rough guess, yes that would be a sign of being unfit. Its like me, i'm thin as a stick and if you saw me for the first time you'd think i'd be pretty athletic. But thanks to being a 5 a day smoker for 2 1/2 years i do run out of breath a lot faster than most, hence why i'm currently trying to quit.

Well I'm certainly not 80. I am aware that we don't have a real excuse, but literally everyone is tired walking up the stairs in our college (I'm talking a few floors). I'd probably know more healthy people if the college had any P.E. classes.
