Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?
Disclaimer: No offence intended upon the Jack Will's wearing, blonde and gorgeous types that all had a tremendous time on their Gap yahs to Peru and Thailand and the like....(i'm just jealous okay)
Okay, so Leeds is my first choice uni, Sheffield sounds like it'll be my insurance (rejection from Manc) maybe Glasgow, poss UEA, but I recently went to my interview for English Literature and Theatre Studies at Leeds, really liked the city and to my complete shock they gave me an offer!!
I know these are small nigly things but I just wanna ask the current Leeds students about the kind of people that went, how easily they made friends, if they liked the vibe etc...
When I went there I met loadsa different people, mostly girls, mostly lovely, and I suppose the whole point of the meeting people at uni experience is befriending people you may never have made friends with in previous circumstances.
It's just that coming from a fairly crap comprehensive in London, not being particularly sporty or fascinatingly stunning (like most girls in Leeds - 60% girls, come on!) I'm just worried about how I'll fit in, and if I'll have things in common.
I'm part of the Access to Leeds (A2L) thing as well, which probably shows the universities tendency to bring in a range of students, so yeah that's a plus I suppose.
Haha, the joke of it is, one of the reasons I applied to Leeds was because I thought it would be one of the least-rah Russell Group universities!Last edited by dulciemae; 22-04-2012 at 19:43. Reason: If you neg, atleast explain why. But I'm not gonna change my thoughts to please anyone. -
Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?
I really wouldn't worry about it, there are some 'rahs' but I've really not encountered them much - they exist at EVERY university. This could be helped by the fact that I'm the cheapest halls, but honestly, don't worry - I'm neither sporty nor stunning and it's not a problem

Manchester > Leeds, less 'Rahs', and yet it is also an original red-brick
Bigger, better.
Manchester doesn't seem to have the same campus feel as Leeds. Oxford Road is dirty and full of traffic and the buildings look like a bland hospital/government facility. Manchester itself is certainly bigger, but its retail area is concentrated in a 1970s mega mall, while its nightlife is spread over a large area. There's also less to do further afield, whereas Leeds is close to the Dales, York, Harrogate and Ilkley. -
Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?Yeah, generally felt this when I went there, but they rejected me(Original post by sarah1345)

Still love Leeds tho. Must say that the fact that Leeds does A2L shows they want to admit people from a variety of backgrounds. Or maybe they're overcompensating for the rahs!

Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?Yeah, I met one at my interview actually and he was hilarious! (Probably laughing at him more than with him - he did say the radiator was stifling...) What halls are you at? Which are the most fun - Headingly I've heard about..Apparently the most expensive halls are the most over-subscribed which i was a bit shocked by as I thought we'd all be paupers in the same boat!(Original post by livelove)

And yeah, all the private schools kids I've met down the years have gone to either Leeds or Nottingham, with your odd one going to Sheffield, Newcastle or Manchester -

Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?Really? I thought Leeds was meant to have a larger comprehensive school intake...:/(Original post by sarah1345)

Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?
I've barely met any rahs. I've passed a couple on campus but never really come into contact with them. Everyone I know is lovely and normal and awesome
Particularly everyone I know who went to private school are fantastic and nice and normal, not up themselves at all (I went to a state school too). Obviously you will get a few tits here and there but it's the same at any uni really. I'd say Leeds definitely isn't a 'rah uni' from my experience. There are people from everywhere in the country and it's down to earth and unpretentious.
And not everyone is stunning or sporty
We were voted the best-looking student population this year
but actually everyone is pretty normal. (I obviously brought the average up.
)

Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?Aw thanks, you have seriously put my ridiculously worrying mind to ease! I suppose (fingers crossed) when I go, I'll wonder why I wasted my time worrying about all this but it's what self-confessed procrastinators like to do with our time(Original post by thelaststraw)

Haha, I'll definitely help with that average!
Btw, I'm looking into accommodation soon, any advice on best one?...in terms of most fun - I'm not looking for my own turret and great views of the landscape or anything!

Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?i went to met not uni, but meh no difference still Leeds i lived with uni people 2nd and 3rd year, infact i wish id applied to uni
but i didnt met only went on my application to fill up a space (decided by dropping a pen on a piece of paper) then became my firm
i think every uni ends up pretty much the same a mix of people from all over all kinds of back grounds...
infact in contrast (noticed someone above mentioned state school/private school) in my flat first year, so all met students (though from my contact with uni people same stands going off those i lived with ), my flatmates + the rugby lads + a few other friends someone asked "so who isnt a private snob" (said in jest) and there was only me and him that didnt go to private school, and in 2nd n 3rd i can think of only one other that didnt go to private school, but then i guess that is kinda set out in stats, much more likely to go to uni if you went to a private school/grew up in certain affluent areas... (gonna stop now, i could talk about this for days
stupid dissertation! lol)
