Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?
Welcome to the University of Leeds forum: where prospective and current students can discuss everything from Otley Run to the Parkinson Steps, from the Eddy B Library to Brotherton.

Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?Exactly.(Original post by thehaberprocess)
There seem to be two versions of Rah's floating around. Either it's posho, hunter type or a rich chav?
I would never have considered fake tan, peroxide blonde messy hair and UGG boots as posh.

Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?Please go ahead, make your argument.(Original post by bahjat93)
Leeds is a uni for chavs. It could arguably be the worst uni in the Russell group!
I'd like to hear it. -
Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?Yes I have(Original post by bahjat93)
Have you ever been to Leeds university?
Checking the entry req's for two randomly selected courses against req's at other RG universities shows this to be untrue. They are comparable, except to those few you would expect to be higher than all the rest.the grade requirements are low for EVERY course!
Obviously if you're going to decide what uni you go to based solely on the entry requirements then you're probably a bit of a berk anyway.Last edited by Mister Dead; 14-05-2012 at 18:57. -
Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?maybe you are(Original post by bahjat93)
Or i'm smart enough to get into a VERY good university
.
Game set and matched
then again maybe not.(Original post by bahjat93)
I'm like you dude. Passed my GCSEs (7As-A*) with-out any revision.
When it came to my AS exams i got an DDEE (biology, physics, chemistry and maths).
I'm in A2 now and had to re-do every exam i did in AS
Either way, I hadn't realised this was a competition. You still haven't told us all about your experience of Leeds, or of other universities. Or of the system by which you've ranked the russell groups (entry req's... really?) -
Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?
It's a shame about your phone. I'm sure they don't have crime or carelessness where you're going.
I've lived in other great cities, visited friends at other uni's, my gf goes to Nottingham and that certainly has a lovely campus and is a decent uni. I don't feel any particular need to defend Leeds above any other place, and if was going to complain about anything it would be that it's the oppossite of too 'chavvy'. It seems overwhelmingly 'posh', on my course at least.
Leeds is a very decent uni, just as the rest of the russell group are. -
Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?I suppose we're back to square one then. At first, most people on this thread were telling me not to be so stupid and that Leeds was hardly full of posh people and now it's evidently not true! Great. aha.(Original post by Mister Dead)

When I went there I spoke to one guy that was a bit toff-like but most girls that could potentially be on my course (English and theatre, needless to say a fairly 'female' degree judging by the general demographic!) were sooo nice and normal, which was a great relief ocnsidering the reputation I had heard from it! Coming from a less than affluent background, I just hope there are a lot of people that'll be on my wavelength and be down to earth! I have no problems with privately educated people, I just dislike the arrogance that 'rahs' bring about - ie. flash the cash sort of people, and just hope there a good proportion of people not like that!Last edited by dulciemae; 15-05-2012 at 19:26. -
Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?
Yeah there are some. But then there are all kinds of people - it's a city so there is a fair bit of variety, though it is a student city.
There are also all kinds of people on each course too.
Just be up for socialising - you might meet some people you don't like but that's how you find people you do like.
But seriously, there's a bit of everyone around here. -
Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?Yeah I guess with 30,000 + students there's got to be a bit of variety! Would you say most people are down to earth though? As long as people are nice and up for a laugh I'm not fussed!(Original post by Mo-Amin)

Are you glad you chose Leeds? -
Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?
it TOTALLY varies. my housemates are on advertising and design/marketing masters and they are about the only 4 of thirty that are not international students. my course has loads of people from private school backgrounds. I think the demographic really must vary a lot by course.

Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?dont laugh but what is a rah?(Original post by dulciemae)
Disclaimer: No offence intended upon the Jack Will's wearing, blonde and gorgeous types that all had a tremendous time on their Gap yahs to Peru and Thailand and the like....(i'm just jealous okay)
Okay, so Leeds is my first choice uni, Sheffield sounds like it'll be my insurance (rejection from Manc) maybe Glasgow, poss UEA, but I recently went to my interview for English Literature and Theatre Studies at Leeds, really liked the city and to my complete shock they gave me an offer!!
I know these are small nigly things but I just wanna ask the current Leeds students about the kind of people that went, how easily they made friends, if they liked the vibe etc...
When I went there I met loadsa different people, mostly girls, mostly lovely, and I suppose the whole point of the meeting people at uni experience is befriending people you may never have made friends with in previous circumstances.
It's just that coming from a fairly crap comprehensive in London, not being particularly sporty or fascinatingly stunning (like most girls in Leeds - 60% girls, come on!) I'm just worried about how I'll fit in, and if I'll have things in common.
I'm part of the Access to Leeds (A2L) thing as well, which probably shows the universities tendency to bring in a range of students, so yeah that's a plus I suppose.
Haha, the joke of it is, one of the reasons I applied to Leeds was because I thought it would be one of the least-rah Russell Group universities! -
Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?Yeah I'd say most were down to Earth. But pretty much everyone is nice and up for a laugh! It's all good vibes really =](Original post by dulciemae)

Yeah definitely - the city is great. Coming from Manchester there aren't many cities that could match up to what I'm used to but Leeds has a lot and it's quite compact. Most people are safe and what with all the students everyone's pretty chill. The uni itself is fantastic, there's always some sorts of goings-on to catch your attention and the student union is genuinely brilliant.
My only problem is I don't think my course is right for me I guess but that's not really a thing. -
Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?To be honest, I would associate that with noveau-riche types not typically middle class people. Most 'posh' people would not 'flash cash' as it is seen as arrogant and vulgar. It just depends on the individual as I try to look beyond the background someone comes from and their own individual attributes. If you're a nice girl (reading your comments that seems to be the case) and by luck you're with like-minded people you should enjoy the university experience! Of course you may encounter the type of people you dislike, that is almost inevitable, but most people will be in the same boat and will want to make friends. If someone judges someone based on their background or household wealth, they are superficial and definitely not worth knowing.(Original post by dulciemae)

Apologies if I have repeated other points made, but I hope this reassures you! -
Re: Is Leeds Uni full of 'Rahs'?whoops, sorry for really slow reply! yess, ive firmed leeds! just need to get through these exams now! have you firmed leeds too?(Original post by dulciemae)
