I thought it was significantly lower than for lads but I was talking to someone who said there wasn't much difference.

I'm 21, male, and for my first time it was just over £2000. This was after a lot of searching for the cheapest cars to insure. Most quotes were between £3000-£6000 and there was one quote for £14 000! These were all for cars with average-sized engines that cost about £1000

I passed my driving test in 2010, nearly two years ago (passed in June) and still haven't insured a car yet because it is too expensive! I know what you mean with quotes, because I used to search constantly and the prices were far too much in my opinion. So I just gave up, bit sad really because I'd love to drive instead of having to use my push bike to get to Tesco, Betfred and in to town etc

Have you tried the comparison websites confused.com, compare the market and go compare? I found go compare gave me the cheapest quotes.

It should be at least double for a male vs female with the same age on the same car.

Thats until December this year when new rules come in meaning it will be a lot more expensive for girls than it is now.
Why dont you change your gender to female on confused.com after you have got a quote as a male and notice the difference?

About time. The argument that it is a business decision to charge girls less is ridiculous. If a business chose to pay males more than females for whatever reason it would not be acceptable.

There are so many other factors than just if your female or male.

My insurance for my first car is just over £2000 and that was with a lot of bargaining and hours of searching.

My first quote was £1800 3rd party fire and theft for a 1.4 S Reg Astra, now with 2 years NCB (and 3 points ) it's £1000 for fully comprehensive on a 1.6 Ford Focus.

Insurance for young girls is expensive. The gap between the price for boys and girls depends on a lot of factors, but boys do on average pay quite a bit more. For example, a lad i work with paid £1800 for his car insurance and his sister (who is a year younger) got a quote on his car and it only came up as £1100.
I saw something on top gear a while back saying that boys pay double the amount girls pay- i think that is a bit exaggerated though- from what ive seen/heard, the difference isnt quite that big.

i think the price gp between boys and girls has narrowed allot recently due to european law which said it was sexist to charge boys more.
