Re: FRESHERS: All your questions answered!
Hey i'm considering English at Birmingham. I visited late last year and too be honest, didn't get the best feeling but I loved the course and I love Birmingham itself. So I was wondering what it was like for you in your first year and if you had any doubts in choosing Birmingham, and if so what dispelled them?

Hey. I have loads of friends doing English, and they all absolutely love it
I haven't had any doubts about choosing Birmingham. I knew that it was the right place for me as soon as I visited. It is a great city, the uni is fantastic; the sports, societies and social life are all brilliant too

Re: FRESHERS: All your questions answered!
Hi to everyone!
I'm an overseas student and I have confirmed Brum for IR. As I am not familiar with UK system etc., I am just wondering what does actually happen during a 'Freshers' Week' in Birmingham...is it just basically you come, accomodate yourself and than there are many events where to meet people and get to know the place? This is probably a silly question, but I'd just like to know what is coming up...and do I have to come exactly the day when the 'Freshers' Week' starts or am I perhaps free to come later? I have not received any information yet from the university about the exact dates...
Also, what is the usual attitude towards overseas people? I'm european though. I'm kind of worried about the new place and everything...and I'm not sociable either.
Thank you in advance for replies

Re: FRESHERS: All your questions answered! If you're "not sociable" in that you won't get involved in a range of events, throw yourself out there, and meet a range of different people, then you may not have the best experience possible, but it's obviously up to you how you take part. You're not expected to do anything you don't want to do.(Original post by Stumaj)

You'll hear a lot about freshers, but there'll be lots of night out events to clubs that the Guild of Students puts on in the first couple of weeks. There'll start fro about weekend of the 15th/16th September, as that's when most people will move into their halls of residence. Depending on your halls, there may be day time and evening events as well, and societies will be showcasing their activities throughout too.
I believe there are a couple of events at the start of the year to help welcome and introduce international students to the university and area.
As for international students in general, there's a huge diversity. While not all European students count as "international" regarding fees so they're not international per se, I live with a couple of people who have come over to the UK to study. Overall I'd say everyone is quite welcoming. There may be groups of both UK and international students who tend not to mix in who they socialise with, but that's obviously their choice and I wouldn't say anyone thinks there's any wrong with that. -

Re: FRESHERS: All your questions answered!Yes, the cleaning of your whole flat, including kitchen and bathroom is your responsibility. However, if you want it, you can pay for the uni cleaning services, but personally, I'd just do it myself!(Original post by kchungcool)
Hi, I am just wondering, in terms of accommodation, are students responsible for cleaning their shared bathrooms? Thank you. -
Re: FRESHERS: All your questions answered! It depends where you live, some places do get cleaners that clean kitchen and bathrooms already included in the price(Original post by kchungcool)

Re: FRESHERS: All your questions answered!Based on my experience last year, once you have confirmed your A-Level results and accommodation, the accommodation services will email you with a date for moving in.(Original post by Vicky Devon)
Hey, where would i find out the exact dates for freshers for Birmingham university 2012, as i need to be sure. When would we move into halls? etc and when all the events start?
Thanks
The first day of term last year was 26th September. We moved into accommodation on the 17th September. So if its similar to that, moving day will be 15/16 September for freshers week, followed by term starting on 24 September.
