This is what I study too and if you are looking at some of the cheaper accomodation, Derwent would be a good bet. It's where the vast vast majority of my lectures have been and seminars and where quite a large portion of Politics students choose to live because it's also where the Department is based. Just a thought (although, Vanbrugh is pretty awesome)
    Sweet, thanks a lot

There is quite a bit of incorrect information in this thread!

The following changes will be happening from September 2012:

    - Langwith is moving over to Heslington East and all the current Langwith buildings on Hes West will become part of Derwent College

    - The newly built sports centre is opening around June and that is situated in Hes East, not sure what will be happening with the old sports centre so if you are a sporty person then Hes East will be much closer!

I forget what else I was going to say!

Trust me, go for Derwent. Derwent this year is absolutely amazing. I wasn't the type of person to go for the 'party' college and it happened mostly cause of the application process leaving me no other option, but I am ridiculously happy I went there. I was all bothered about having an ensuite too, but believe me when I say it really doesn't matter not having one. At all. Because Derwent are taking over Langwith's rooms on Hes West, we're going to be twice the size we used to be. Hopefully we retain the massive college spirit regardless. Just do Derwent. Go on.

Still can't decide between Derwent and James :argh:.

Derwent seems a bit come down, but I love their bar and atmosphere. However, I am a bit worried about it being all about booze - which I have kinda outgrown by now (I'll be 20 when I start my course).

James seems nice, but location-wise I like Derwent more (with all the green in front of Heslington Hall, facing the water ).

Let-wise both suck as they only offer 39 week lets if you want to go catered - which I do :P

I'm seriously thinking about joining Derwent. Just a few questions:

    - If not en-suite, how is it sharing the shower/toilets between around 10 people (I think)?

    - I'm going to be studying law, do you know any others at Derwent doing law?

    - What are their experiences of having to travel from Hes West to Hes East everyday? Is it better, or worse (considering the Library is on Hes West and I imagine most of the fun happens on the main campus, too)?

    - What is the catered accommodation like?

    Thanks!

Hi! I'm considering Derwent as well, the fact that it's a "party college" doesn't really put me off other than the general "no-one will like me" angst. What's the catering like?

Hey guys, sorry for not responding earlier. The catering is actually really good. Usually about 3 options for dinner and then a veggie one, there's always jacket potatoes/salad as well if nothing takes your fancy. I personally always miss breakfast, but you get to choose from 5 breakfast items, which include things like yogurt, croissants, cereal, as well as bacon, beans, hash browns, sausages etc etc. You get tea, toast, and juice as well. My favourite aspect of catering is just how sociable it is, sitting at a table with different people every day and chatting in a big group where I guess other colleges might just hang around in their kitchens at mealtimes.

Sharing the toilets is fine. There's a toilet just around the corner from me and a shower round the other corner. There has always been a toilet/shower free every time I want one, and I have not met anyone on my way to/from the shower, EVER, mostly because I am a shower ninja, but it is possible if you don't want to be publicly soggy.

While I don't know anyone doing law that I can think of, I do know several people who go to Hes East for their course. It's a simple case of hopping on a bus for a few minutes; I guess you do have to get up a little earlier to factor that into your time, but honestly I've never even BEEN to Hes East, and I can't imagine that ever being the centre of my uni experience; so much happens on Hes West that I believe my uni experience wouldn't be so good if I weren't right by the action all the time.

If you have any more questions just ask, sorry again for the delay.

I'm in James and I go to D-Bar pretty often; I've been there more than I've been to the Lounge, which is a minute's walk from my room.

I wouldn't worry much about a 39-week let. I have a 33 week let and moving out over Easter was annoying: I carried all my stuff over to a friend's place in Halifax, and going home and coming back was an inconvenience. I had to be out of my room by Saturday morning, at 9 am, which meant I had to catch a Friday evening train. But the tickets for those trains are incredibly expensive, so I was forced to catch a train on Thursday, instead, and I missed my last seminar. Likewise, I wanted to come back to York early to do some work, but I couldn't because I wasn't allowed back into my room until a day before term started. The only upside was that I didn't have to pay rent for 5 weeks (which saved me quite a bit of money).

But if you have a 39-week let, you have much more flexibility and you don't have to move out. I imagine you'd also be saving a lot of money on food, which balances out the extra weeks you'll be paying for.

    ...
    Thank you!

I have decided to go to James already (if I get in that is). Chances are I will spend quite a lot of time in Derwent with the School of PEP and many of my lectures being there. So I guess I will get the best of both worlds. Being able to spend time in Derwent bar, enjoying the scenery at Heslington Hall and sleeping in a nice place.

I would say Derwent is always well known for being very social, I have friends from Derwent who are always going out plus they have events going on quite a lot and I think the layout with blocks all joined together makes socialising much easier, compared to Alcuin for example which has separate flats and each floor has different keycards so you can't go wandering to other kitchens to meet people etc. Then after Derwent I would say most parts of James, Vanbrugh, Langwith are also very sociable.

Hi, I could use some advice!

I'm looking for somewhere were I'm gonna have a good time!
Ensuite is a must, somewhere relatively sociable with people who aren't gonna be total recluses.
Also i'm curious as to how the accomodation is.. Here is what I think:
There will be one floor with about 10 rooms (not sure if all same sex) all share a Kitchen/ Social area. Am i close?
Also will I be sharing with people on the same/ a similar course to me?

As I'm doing Computer Science and Maths, I'm a bit apprehensive as to whether people I'll be sharing with will be very prejudice about me. But it is quite the contrary, and I'm not your stereotypical CS 'geek'.

    Help/ advice appreciated!

If you want a sociable place with ensuites too, go for James! There's also quite a lot of Maths and Computer Science people in James too, probably because Maths is like a 2 minute walk away. You'll find that most ensuite blocks in a lot of colleges are quite unsociable but James doesn't seem to be.
Oh also, all blocks are mixed sex (from what I know) and in James you either live in a 'house' with 15 other people and a kitchen on the ground floor, or flats of 6-12 people with a kitchen on each floor.

You won't get much crap about it to your face (until your mates find https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...26968926_n.jpg -_-) but the general perception of CS geeks does exist. If you're closer to normal than most of us are then it's not much of an issue!

Exactly what I'm after! Most have said Vanbrugh and James! Although Derwent appears to be the fun college but it has no ensuites apart from ridiculously expensive ones.... Apparently

Be proud of your subject. If people think you're a geek, they're jealous because you're obviously clever! !!!

    Good luck!

I don't think that anyone would really be prejudiced unless you lived up to the reputation and stayed as a recluse the whole time. To be honest I'd imagine that the majority of people, regardless of what they're studying will be up for a good time and I don't see why any flat sharers should think otherwise of you unless you give them reason.. (although that applies to everyone, not just CS people!)
