did some in DT graphics in college - didnt take it to the extreme like and its a bit blurry now as i didnt focus on it but the first year at uni supposedly gets everyone at the same level with the teaching to use the software and design packages etc...
    so all is good :P
    whats your first choice??

Hi there, i'm living at Carnegie Village this year in a cluster en-suite flat. I study Games Design already but had to defer my year because of illness and missing all of my work which was crap, but leeds met is really nice. 3D modelling is so good as well.

Hi, i had no experience what so ever. I hadn't even touched flash or any editing software at all, never mind 3D modelling. Its really easy to pick up so if you have experience it'll help a lot. It's just time consuming and a lot of practise needs to be done in your own time which is hard being a student lol

Never heard of that program before, we use Z-brush and 3DS Max. Base mesh in 3DS then sculpting in Z-Brush. All up to your own preference but there the main pieces of software they get us to use.

I will be starting this course this year at leeds met. I only have basic skills in UDK and C++ programming and the usual software that most people have messed about with for example photoshop etc. I will be living in private rented accomodation between headingly campus & university of Leeds (as the misses is doing zoology at uni of Leeds).

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but just letting you know that I've applied for Games Design at Leeds Met also.

I'll be living in Carnegie village, cluster flats so i'll most likely see some of you around!

I have a question for Jamie, who I hope will still read this topic! You mentioned flash in one of your previous posts? was that an optional module ? or do we have to do it? I only ask because I used it this year and its an awful program, was hoping to never use it again! ha

    Cheers,

    Reece
Yeah bro still reading this hoping to meet a few people tbh before September haha. Looks like we're living in the same place and flats as well

From what i remember from first year you never used to be able to pick modules up until your third year. When i used Adobe Flash it was to create prototypes of a working in game HUD, showing icon changes etc, and also a working menu system, showing different pages etc. Not sure how much the course will have changed so don't quote me on it. The tutors tend to teach you in the software the uni can afford and in methods they know, so the most used software is Photoshop, Flash, After Effects, Illustrator. Then Zbrush, 3DS Max.
Some modules like motion graphics i had to do, you HAVE to use certain software, we had to use AfterEffects which annoyed me because I'm better in Flash but i guess it's all a learning curve lol!

Yeah man if you have Facebook hit me up or something bro. Video editing should be good as i remember a module where you had to create a short video which was balls because i can't edit video for **** lol...Editing would be the main thing because you have to make advertisements, marketing, posters etc through Photoshop and you can even use it for texturing 3D models and stuff.

But no one worry i went knowing nothing and everyone pretty much starts off in the basics. Anything you know just gives you and advantage.

Hi everyone, there is a Games Design Facebook page. I don't think I can post links on here, but just search for "Leeds Metropolitan Games Design 2012/13" into the search, and I am sure you will find it
