TSR Med Students' Society Part IV
The place for medical students to discuss all things about the course from work load to applying for jobs and everything else. Not the place for applicants to ask current medical students questions!

Ah, the "PBL" one you guys did before we met you at Sams?
Anywho, 2 down, 2 more to go for you guys...then Summerdaze on Wed! WOOP!
I think this year has taught me to think more critically - the stuff we got tested on the MBBS course tested stuff which was pretty much set in stone whereas with Med Ed being wishy washy, I've had to think critically to sift out the decent research from the not-so-decent research. Re work ethic, I totally agree - besides that horrible Friday before the dissertation deadline when you guys met the grumpy and stressed side to me (
), I think I prob put more effort into learning dance routines/completing that huge audit this year than I have put into learning for BSc exams.
Srsly? Stressed, yes, grumpy, no. I've never seen you even in a slightly bad mood! I spent less hours in lectures this year than I did playing netball or in the gym. Gap year, hells yes

Re: TSR Med Students' Society Part IVTotally agree.(Original post by digitalis)
The counterargument is twofold as far as I can see:
1.) It is good for preclinical morale, they feel they are doing something 'mediciney' and therefore inspires them to work.
2.) It teaches them 'the correct way of doing it' before going onto the wards. This is of course nonsense because all that happens is that students end up memorising scripts of things to say and go through the motions of examining or history taking without knowing why you actually do it or whatever.
I remember in first year rattling through 'there is no leuchonychia or koilonychia visible, no clubbing or du Puytrens' contractures' etc and it was ridiculous...didn't know what any of those meant. As for history taking, I only really started to ask questions instinctively this year, before it was just rattle of a list of say 'GI symptoms' and you would come out with a list of positives and negatives, without actually knowing the relevance of anything!
First year OSCEs have changed since you did them though - they're now very basic and are more about teaching you to use the right techniques when percussing/auscultating/palpating etc. We were only told to look out for koilonychia etc from second year and whilst we don't see it on any of the actors, I suppose its just useful for getting used to the terminology for subsequent clinical rotations, and it helps to put all the pathologies you learn into some form of context. Totally agree about you rambling off a script though but that's not going to change. -
Re: TSR Med Students' Society Part IVIt should do! Will be so gutted if it doesn't stay this sunny!(Original post by Becca-Sarah)

Re: TSR Med Students' Society Part IVedit: okay decided its really not appropriate to share the whole story here and had never intended to. I'd hoped things might have changed in a year but no.(Original post by RollerBall)

edit: okay decided its really not appropriate to share the whole story here and had never intended to. I had just hoped that having now completed a year of medicine she would see its actually not massive easily and not that hard to fail and might have some hindsight into why her comments where inappropriate. unfortunately her responses have proven otherwise.
I shall PM.
EDIT: That was in response to the unedited post.Last edited by Medicine Man; 26-05-2012 at 01:06. -

this is what I voted for,
my clinical skills buddy said its definitely du-ju-trens.
I'm very rarely right.
Thanks ! -
Re: TSR Med Students' Society Part IVthe actual story is as is I have said
failed 1st year comes onto facebook page for medic 1st years and says if you want to fail then I'll let you know. Crass! no qualification as to why he failed. Crass!
I never did say it was easy to fail.
then I got a tirade of abuse from you and your so-called caring 2nd year medic buddies. the post was deleted by the admins.
After all this time, I would have expected you Lekky to have a life and not rant on about something months ago.
My late reply is due to the fact that I do have one outside of internet forums/FB and played a lovely doubles game of golf which we won 3 and 2.
Go get a life and stop harping on about stuff from last year! -

As for knowing the "correct way" before going on the wards - we have a 3 week intensive introductory course at the start of 4th year, where we learn all the main examinations and basic clinical skills, before heading off on placement.
The examination performance thing is always a ritual though - just look at PACES. -
Re: TSR Med Students' Society Part IVWe have a similar thing to - unfortunately from the new curriculum changes seems the new way is starting to win - bleh - luckily it's not going to affect me(Original post by Helenia)

Re: TSR Med Students' Society Part IVI remember in the start of third year we were all scoffing at the Oxbridge transfers with their lack of clinical skills etc whilst we were all pros at taking a manual BP etc etc....(Original post by Helenia)
