What happens if Uni of Liverpool merges with Lancaster?..
Hi,
I'm sure some have heard of the possibility of the merger between the Uni of Liverpool and Lancaster.
May I ask what people think about this?
How will the reputation of Uni of Liverpool be affected, as Liverpool is a Russel group uni and a redbrick, while Lancaster isn't?
Will the name of Liverpool change, to LLU? I've heard this is possible...
Why is Liverpool struggling in the area of research quality output, whereas some other Russel Groups Uni's aren't?
Discuss! -
Re: What happens if Uni of Liverpool merges with Lancaster?..Lancaster sits above Liverpool in most (all?) league tables. Don't act like you're getting the short end of the stick here.(Original post by analani)

I've never heard of them merging. When is this supposed to be occurring?

However in terms of prestige Liverpool outranks it. Rankings change constantly, and the Guardian rankings are hardly held in high esteem. The Times is.Last edited by analani; 12-03-2012 at 17:59. -
Re: What happens if Uni of Liverpool merges with Lancaster?..Really?(Original post by Muscovite)
Lancaster is far superior to Liverpool
Why?
Do you have experience of the two universities? -
Re: What happens if Uni of Liverpool merges with Lancaster?..Well as a Geology student at the University of Liverpool, I think it's fair to say that our reputation would be dragged down if we merged with Lancaster. Our research department is one of the best in the UK. It's true that Lancaster ranks higher than us on an overall scale but unfortunately they don't appear to be a Russell Group university? and as The Russell Group represents 20 leading UK universities which are committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience and unrivalled links with business and the public sector it's possible to suggest that Liverpool is a more prestigious university to attend(Original post by Muscovite)
Yes i do, but that's irrelevant as it's common knowledge and obvious that lancaster outranks Liverpool - it's a very good research university and whilst Liverpool is good it could probably benefit from being propped up by Lancaster in this merger

Re: What happens if Uni of Liverpool merges with Lancaster?..
I'm at Lancaster and we don't mind taking Liverpool under our wing. Liverpool has some good departments but on the whole, is way down the rankings. Both universities have good and bad departments. Our maths department is amazing as is our environmental sciences department but in other subjects Liverpool trump us.
It would be good to link up although I'd like to know more of the details and how equal the partnership would be. It would be a shame for both universities to suffer from working together.
As for renaming... The Mersey-Lune University

Re: What happens if Uni of Liverpool merges with Lancaster?..
To all Liverpool students: You have to light candles and pray both universities to merge
It is fact that Lancaster University is well better then your uni in all competitive fields.
PS. I have heard that they are considering to merge the administrative office of both universities to reduce the costs
So there is no need to worry!

Re: What happens if Uni of Liverpool merges with Lancaster?..Wasnt the Russell Group founded in 95 or 98? Are you saying that it is impossible that other unis may have risen above RG ones in that 14 year period?(Original post by 123Runner_Bean)

Re: What happens if Uni of Liverpool merges with Lancaster?..The Russell group was founded in 1994; and as a response smaller universities formed the '1994 group' which consisted of smaller research intensive universities. Movement between the two groups has occurred and at the end of this academic year QMoL, Exeter, Durham and York (Lancaster's closely linked university) will switch from the 1994 Group and the Russell Group.(Original post by rawkus)

Re: What happens if Uni of Liverpool merges with Lancaster?..
It'd be a bit surprising as I was really expecting to see mergers starting with the post 92 unis... Particularly the large number down in london.
Full merger would presumably mean duplicate courses would be rationalised and you'd end up with some courses being taught in only in lpool and others on the current lancaster campus... Could be bad news if your dissertation supervisor decides they're facing redundancy and decides to quit on you.
Don't think anyone's degree is going to be deprestiged though
So there is no need to worry!
