    Royal Holloway Firmers - 2012
Thought it might be a good idea for people who have firmed (or who are going to firm) for 2012 to have a separate thread, so you can have a chat with your potential future classmates before you get here! Feel free to ask all the questions you want about the uni/area/general uni life.

    Let us know:

    The course you've applied for
Offer status e.g. Unconditional/Conditional - (Grades Required + Predicted Grades)
What are you most looking forward to about university?
    Where are you coming from?
Where you've applied to/applying for accommodation

Here we go, congratulations to those who've got their results and best of luck to those taking them this summer.

I visited the University yesterday and I absolutely loved it. I was really unsure after reading a few reviews about RHUL, but visiting yesterday definitely confirmed everything. Just need to meet my offer now...

Ignore this. Had an offer, was going to firm, but once I visited I decided I couldn't live in Egham - coming from a small town originally, I need somewhere a bit more exciting.

Hi Akka, RHUL is a uni I'm looking forward to go to but am still pondering...But when and if I end up at RHUL, think I could take a few pointers from you regarding computer science. I'm going there to study CS bsc and since you're an expert already I really could learn a few things. Trust me I'm not annoying or pushy, just tell me when you need space lololol

Agreed, I was quite worried myself with all the reading I done on the forums, but have to say it really is beautiful and wonderful place. The founders building is just fantastic, staff and students were super friendly. I loved the experience so much more than Bath and a hell of a lot more than University College London.

    Hi Praxxtor,

Doing BSc CS would be good although the department is having some changes under the new principal to be more practical oriented than theoretically-based research. There are some leading researchers at CS Dept: Alex Clark, Chris Watkins (Cambridge grads), Dave Cohen (Oxford grad), Anders Yeo (shame Alex & Anders have left), which made me choose RHUL to do Ph.D instead of Cambridge Uni., plus the funding issue.

Thanks for the information, I read through their profiles on RHUL's website. Really interesting it was. What specifically about computer science do you enjoy? Did you major and minor in something or was it pure CS? Do you have to be a mathematical expert to pass the course? Am I right in thinking the maths they teach on an A-level course is different to the one they teach at CS?

You absolutely don't have to be a Mathematics expert to pass a Computer Science course (I myself wasn't ).

I did a BSc Computer Science (Information Security) at RHUL, which is a joint-degree with the Maths Dept., before doing an M.Phil at Cambridge Uni., in CompSci as well but slightly shifted toward Engineering (robotics & signal processing). There were some Maths involved in the teaching, but most of them can be learnt from scratch. And I never did an A-Level in the UK either.

I enjoyed the Robotics courses at RHUL a lot, especially they use Lego to teach . I believe the CS Dept. still offer the courses now.

The course you've applied for: Economics with Spanish
Offer status : Conditional Offer of ABB, Predicted AAB
What are you most looking forward to about university? Sexy orange castle, campus layout (really wasnt fond of these, i prefered others like bristol or lse etc, but RHUL has a very nice looking campus so im not too bothered)
Where are you coming from? Camberley, Surrey, so not far at all, just down the A30
Where you've applied to/applying for accommodation: Still deciding, but probably the most popular ones (TBW or Wedderbun)

My insurance is cardiff who actually want higher grades at AAB for the same course. But i just loved RHUL too much. I guess it was down to my bad organisation in not choosing an insurance uni with lower necessary grades.. however there are few good ones that want less than ABB...
