You act like a few hours of meeting someone you will know them well enough to know what they are like to live with which is very optimistic ha! You won't get to know anyone well enough until you live with them anyway, and atleast in halls you know everyone is a student there

Well you'll get an idea of who you could potentially get along with and who you wouldn't, and besides in halls you wouldn't know someone either. In my sister's first year she had like 3 different girls that switched accommodation because they didn't get along until they finally found someone they got along with. I'm not saying you'll know someone well enough after only a few hours, however it helps you meet people to potentially live with - you can find someone you click with and hopefully you'll get along with them. Good point, I suppose it's mainly pot luck for who you live with in the first year, unless you live with people from college you already know - and I'd like to make new friends rather than stick with old ones.
I'm trying to find arty people because then at least we have SOME common ground, even if we don't get on personally. I've been looking for houses, and if anyone else is interested in an art-student house, let me know

Yeah I'd like to make friends too, but i don't understand why you want to stick to one type of person? I have friends who do art but im absolutely rubbish at it! Your course shouldn't define who you are friends with surely?

I'm starting Plymouth Uni in Sept, i'll be 21 when I start.

In your own personal opinion, where is the best place to live for you?

Would you recommend housing or halls?

Can you smoke in the halls? .

Hello!

I am currently a fresher and i'm living in Halls. I quite like halls but you don't get to pick the hall which you live in, you give a price range of what you are able to afford. I have friends who live in halls and friends who live in house share and we equally socialise and so really it depends on what you want to do  also it depends on whether you want to share bathroom facilities or not, you can get en-suite halls.

I believe you can smoke in halls but only in your own room otherwise it could set the fire alarm off!

good luck

xx

Well no, I don't expect that the people I live with will all be my friends, or be my only friends. It's going to be hard to find a group of friends before we apply for accomodation, it's gonna be a bit of a lottery, so I figured the next best thing is people doing similar subjects - at least that's something to break the ice with.

I usually break the ice with "Hello", but to each their own. :P
My master plan I will share with you. Lets assume I get into halls, move into halls at the earliest possible time and day (Time aswell), throw all your stuff in your room (don't bother unpacking.... do it later!). Then go help people bring there stuff in  You instantly seem nice and you break the ice. What can be simpler?

but surely that is contradictory to what you just said about having an art house? When we go to the find a home thing they get you to say what you want from people, for example id say i want people who love to party and then id get paired up with people like that. I just wouldn't focus my efforts on making friends just from my faculty because it may come across as a bit snobby/rude if you are saying you only have time for one type of person. just some advice, take or leave it

And I was at Hertfordshire Uni on the weekend (which sucks balls in terms of a fun place to live as Hertfordshire is soo damn boring - I live here) and the halls security shut down a party for a friends birthday at Half 11. I can't be doing with that, plus they have 2 showers and 2 toilets between about 40 people, I think 1 shower and toilet between 8 is the limit really.

i will be 21 when i start too! i've got an unconditional offer so ive applied for halls! i thought i might as well... will be an experience! if i cant get in to halls.. i'll have to look for something else

Yeah that's very true and I can't imagine many uni's are like Hertfordshire. The place looked like something out of a Nazi propaganda film, the whole thing is secluded (kinda) and fenced off from anyone who isn't a student at the uni!

As Someone who does campus and accommodation tours, I can say there is never two toilets between 40 people. It's typically 3 showers between 16/17, and 2-3 toilets for that as well, and most people don't encounter problems with this. It's normally that amount from 6-12 in most of the traditional halls in Telford it's 3 between 6, and theres two bathrooms between 7 people in the houses.

Whilst it is a pain that security do shut down parties, they don't always do it, and you need a permit to have one, which is annoying but means they let you go on longer. It's done to be considerate to others in the halls so others aren't kept up all night. Most people only tend to stay in that long for pre-drinks anyway.

Nazi propaganda film? Bit strong, seeing as the University has strong links and hertiage to the De Havilliand sight where planes that fought in WW2 were built. Only the town center is boring, there are plenty of surrounding towns to visit, people who say its boring are the ones not willing to look past the end of their nose. Also, yes, it's hard for non-students to get in at night, which is good, because it means random people can't walk right into campus.

While it might not have been for you, there's no need to slate the Uni. People can do a lot worse.

Yeah I did kind of over do it tbh, it's not that bad. But going to a birthday party and it ending an hour after you're there seems lame.

Also I live in one of the surrounding towns of Hatfield. There's some good history to the area but I personally wouldn't recommend it as place to move to, there just isn't that much to enjoy. The best thing about it for me is being close to London, that's about it.
