Sustainability in architecture
Hi guys it would be great if you could complete this survey, thanks for looking
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9ZP6DXF -
Re: Sustainability in architecture
I've filled it out but I thought I should say I am doing A-levels at the minute, but I've applied to Architecture 2012. However, I've just finished an EPQ called Working Towards Zero-Carbon Housing, so I have done quite a lot of research on this subject. Out of interest what is your survey for? Hopefully you can still use mine even though I don't really qualify

Re: Sustainability in architecture
Done! I'm not studying architecture though - but was that a problem? :s
please could you help me out by doing mine in return please?

Thank you -

Please complete mine http://www.jkmlee.com/icontrial

Re: Sustainability in architectureI'm about to start a very similar EPQ - Could you recommend any resources? or any advice? Thanks in advance(Original post by Claire888)

Re: Sustainability in architectureOK well what exactly were you planning because it may depend? I signed up to a load of newsletters by email, things like the scientific american, which had a lot about new green technology and scientific discoveries which are related (plus other interesting but unrelated stuff) and also this one I found by chance called Inhabit, its a NYC newsletter so a lot of the stories are related to New Yorkers, but it is all about an eco-lifestyle and gave me a lot of case studies I used in my essay.(Original post by laurenb11)

Make sure you stock up now, I started at the beginning of summer and it meant when I came down to writing the essay properly I had a lot of extra information. Try looking on google for newsletters or whatever will be most useful for your EPQ. That's how I found the ones I signed up for. Also I was already subscribed to Grand Designs magazine, and got case studies from there (and from previous shows) and had a few AJs and other architecture magazines and books that I took information from.
Oh also and this was the most sad thing, when I went to university open days I had a look around their libraries for related books or journals, but it gave me some interesting things to use.
Anyway I didn't need to do all of what I did, so don't worry if you don't have time, it just meant I could look at a number of different things that interested me that perhaps were less well known or still being researched. -
Re: Sustainability in architectureMy working title is 'How can Architects design/build more sustainably?'. I was thinking at building materials, renewable energy etc.I was perhaps going to look at how/if you can you can renovate older houses to be up to 'scratch'? Im still in the very early stages but hoping will open up more windows, and is something i'm really interested in. Ill defiantly have a look for some newsletters, i've also found some books which hopefully will be useful. Im thinking of looking at the Olympic park for a case study as there seems to be a lot of info out there?(Original post by Claire888)

Could u do mine also?
If you're a member of Nikon, Canon, Starbucks, or Coca Cola online communities (follow their twitter, like their fanpage, or join forums on their websites) and have participated during this month, I would really appreciate it if you could take this quick survey in

It will take no more than 10 minutes and there's a bonus! I'm offering 5 prizes of $25 Amazon Vouchers. Thank you

Re: Sustainability in architectureI started out not really knowing what I wanted to end up with. I wrote the introduction and then had more chance to do research and chose to write about sustainable energy manufacture and some stuff about building materials. But by the end it was mainly about incorporating these things without impacting on design which was what interested me most. The good thing is that you can develop an idea so it doesn't matter if your not sure now. I found writing about case studies the most interesting part because you could compare them easily, the Olympic park sounds like a good idea (I actually saw a programme about it yesterday called going fir green or something, so you might be able to find that on the internet and use that) mine was mainly about housing so I never really looked into things like that.(Original post by laurenb11)

so far it hasn't actively helped me to get into architecture (but may come results day) but I know it will help me in September as I know more about that specific subject. Make sure as you go along to choose things you enjoy learning about otherwise the process is very tedious. -
Re: Sustainability in architectureThanks, i've definitely got some more things to think about; domestic scale vs. commercial scale maybe something worth looking at? The case studies seems like a really good idea, especially with finding data and being able to compare them. How did you go about if it effected the design as i've found that pretty hard to consider as it could be seen as opinions?(Original post by Claire888)

yeah im aware it wont really help me get in to uni whether I apply for Architecture or Civil/structural engineering :/ But just for personal interest and basis in either course I think it will be worth. -
Re: Sustainability in architecturewell I just looked at how eco designs were brought about looking at ones where technology etc was hidden and others where they used it to make up interesting design features, so just comparisons and looking at real buildings that exist now. But that's more architecture based so if your interested in engineering as well then yours sounds more suitable, I like your Olympic idea.(Original post by laurenb11)

No mine was personal interest really, as at the beginning the school forced us to do it, according to our own interests. -
Re: Sustainability in architectureI'm still undecided whether to apply to for architecture or civil/structural engineering, ideally i'd love to the joint honours at Sheffield so i hoped the EPQ could cover both disciplines. So perhaps ill cover some of the design issues as well as the tech behind them? Thanks for helping me with this, really appreciate the advice(Original post by Claire888)
