    I've been burgled
Some thugs stole my mac book pro (   ), a smartphone and a netbook.

The police was here but I think they can't really do anything. I'm resigned to nothing being done, but I'm really worried that if these guys get into my computers they might be able to cause even more damage? Realistically, what could they do? I just changed my googlemail password, but I just noticed that on this computer I'm still receiving my email, so I'm guessing it's the same on the mac, so they'll be able to read all my emails and perhaps get some old passwords? The mac was new so there aren't any passwords on it but in the old emails there might be amazon and gmail emails from when I set up my accounts and perhaps some online sites registration emails (like TSR).

What can they do with that information???

    Thanks for your help.

If you use a mail client that stores all of your e-mails locally they will have access to all of that information. Once you've changed your password for all of the websites you use (ensure you do this), you will be logged out of them on your Macbook, including any e-mail accounts to which you were logged in. Any mail clients you use will no longer receive new e-mails until the new password is entered.

Just watch your accounts for any suspicious activity for a while. If they're not caught, they will more likely than not sell them on the black market.

Troll the **** out of your account?

Not really the biggest issue though is it, given what else was stolen? Providing you reset your passwords, whoever uses the computer will be signed out of the accounts.

Don't Macbook Pro's (and certain smart phones) have anti-theft GPS locators that can be activated by the phone company in the event of their being stolen?

When you get replacements, you can install things on them so you can track their location.

Theres even a programme you can get for a Macbook which will record what a theif does with your laptop.

Expensive, but worth it to catch them out.

    Horrible feeling getting burgled.
I don't think they will want to do anything with your goods apart from turn them into cash ASAP so don't worry too much about that. You'll be fine.

I've been burgled myself. I recommend reading 'Home security' by Heather Alston and Calvin Beckford and 'Home security' by D.G. Conway. You can pick up second hand copies on Amazon dirt cheap like I did.

You can never keep out a burglar who is absolutely determined to get in but you can reduce a lot of opportunistic crime by following the recommendations in the book. At the end of the day the burglars want quick and easy access and no risk of detection so anything that makes life more difficult for them is going to persuade them to rob a house down the road instead as it just isn't worth the effort targeting a secure property.

Whenever I leave the house empty at night or in the afternoon during the winter months, I leave the living room light on, draw the blinds so they can't look in and leave the news channel on for voices talking.

It's not nice being burgled or robbed but if you learn from the lesson, it will make you less likely to be a victim in the future. Secondary victimisation is common so it is essential that victims of crime learn from the experience and take the necessary measures to prevent it happening again.

If you linked your GMAIL (Via imap) then they will still have access to your mail.

If you have your online banking linked to your email, you need to inform your bank ASAP. Ring them now, banks are open 24/7.

Not if the password is changed. A dialogue box will keep on popping up requesting re-entry of the login details.

Chances are they just want the electronic goods, I doubt they will be interested in your personal information on the computer. The super cyber criminals can hack you anyway, the person who robbed your house is most likely a drug addict wanting a quick fix so he steals what he can to sell on.

At the end of the day, if they start messing around with your online accounts and stuff, they are exposing themselves and risking detection from the police.

    True.

But depends if the account was in offline mode (before it was burgled). In that case no password would be required.

Thanks everyone.. I'm just worried about passwords because I use online banking and stuff - my passwords aren't saved anywhere or anything but I'm worried I might have used the same password before on some sites, and then I might have emails in my account which show it. Hopefully it's not the case but I'm just a bit worried.

That's really cool!!! Is it automatically installed on mac book pros? (Because obviously I didn't install it myself.) I did however install the GPS tracking on the smartphone when I got it.. I only just remembered that!!

PS. I ran out of rep for today but I will hand it out tomorrow.

Nah, you have to download and pay for it. Its a yearly subscription I believe. Get it tracked, and ring the police with the location.

In addition, if the answers to any of your password recovery questions for any website can be deduced from any details you have on your Mac/phone, you should change those immediately, as well.

You fool...Did you track your Macbook using the macbook tracker app.

You could have prevented this from happening.

He's not a troll imo, he just wants to know what personal information they might have access to.

I think burglars should just be executed. Or have their hands cut off like in the middle east.
People who steal what others earned through hard work deserve no human rights.

I would've thought they're probably just after quick cash, in which case they'll probably wipe it and sell it on. Just be sure to check future bank statements, credit card bills etc for any irregularities.

Sadly, there's little chance of seeing your stuff again, although you never know, no point being a pessimist I guess!
