My son has applied psych. at the campus too as his insurance offer. Like the OP he was offerred it after applying to the main campus. We have been unable to visit unfortunately. He's been offerred Stephenson as his hall. Now I know you probably think John Snow is the best place (!) but are there any good/bad things about Stephenson.

Liked your post by the way... we've been looking for stuff about Queen's Campus for ages and there is very little and what there has been was a bit negative so you cheered us up!

Hey, my girlfriend's in Stephenson and i've kinda lived over there for a few days a week last term with her so i know a reasonable amount about it.

The great thing about Stephenson (or Stevo as the students call it) is that it's so close to lectures. It is literally a two minute walk across the car park and you're at lectures. Stevo's a really good college, the rooms are slightly bigger than John Snow. You share a large kitchen between seven of you and it has basically the same stuff as John Snow.

The only real con i can think with Stevo is that it's 15 minutes away from the nearest shop (Sainsbury's, next to John Snow). It's perfect though for studying as you can study at the library late at night and simply walk across the car park to halls.

The Junior Common Room is large and has hockey tables and a bar. There's a room with a widescreen tv in it and couches. As for my preference on college i'm kinda forced to say John Snow is the better college but at the end of the day they're both pretty much the same. They are both excellent colleges and offer pretty decent value for money. If you have any questions about Stevo or the campus just ask and i'll answer them for you. I'm kind of lucky in the respect that i know both colleges well so can answer questions on both.

    Thanks.

Thank you for all of your responses, you have been really helpful How quickly do halls fill up?

Also how did you find freshers week?
If you have an offer from Durham AND have a college picked or assigned to you then you are automatically given a room. For John Snow you will either be put in halls or Mezzino (now called new halls i think) which is pretty much the same places. Each place is for the college and where they put you does not change your involvement in the college.

You find out who you'll be living with and which halls you'll be living in during the holidays via a Facebook webpage. They list who you'll live with and where and you'll be able to add the people you'll be living with on Facebook and get to know them before you arrive.

Freshers week has something (usually two) events happening every night, known as loud or quiet nights.

The loud nights are for people who want to get drunk, party and generally do what freshens weeks are so famous for. Also just a side note, generally initiations do not happen, i've only known of them for stuff like sports clubs etc. They won't happen here at Durham during freshers week.

Quiet nights are nights for those of you who want a calmer time. So things like bowling, cocktail night, Italian meal etc.

You buy your tickets before you come to Durham online, you can mix and match between quiet and loud. Tickets are generally quite cheap, between £3-5. The most expensive night i can remember was £8. There is one big ticket that gets you all the nights which costs £50 which if you want to go everywhere will save you a heck of a lot of money.

Any other questions don't hesitate to ask. Hope i've covered everything.

I'll answer each person with a different reply.

The bedrooms are fine (currently in my room in halls now ) The common room is large, there's a bar where cheap drinks can be bought, a large screen tv and dvd player. The bar is open from 7-11 every night except sundays which makes it perfect for pre-drinking. On top of this there is a games room with two pool tables, widescreen tv, playstation 3. There is an art room with unlimited paint and paper and water colours etc. There's also a computer room where you can work if you want.

The hall rooms are fine. There not massive but neither are they small. You get an en-suite as standard which i cannot recommend enough. The kitchen is quite large and you'll find that you won't cook the same times as others because everyone in your block will do different courses and thus finish lectures and cook at different times. In your bathroom you get toilet, shower and sink. On top of this you get two meals a week in the waterside paid for you (food is really good) so it is worth your money overall. You get what you pay for, John Snow is a really good college and Durham a really good uni.

The last book back is at 2:00 on a weekday but there are other options than just the bus. If you're going out with mates it makes sense to get a taxi back, you'll get student discount and the more of you there are the cheaper it will be. Usually about £6 for a group of 7 which is alright. There is also Middlesborough which is really good for nights out so don't worry too much about having to go to Durham. John Snow has nights out to Durham and Newcastle and Middlesborough all the time. My flat mates go out drinking all the time and they love it here. Queen's isn't as good for partying as it is in Durham. The accommodation though is. John snow is new, only about 11 years old as far as i can remember and the place is clean and new. Also a little side note you might be interested in, John Snow has recently got funding to have all new showers and toilets fitted into halls in time for next year.

I'm remember what it was like trying to find info on John Snow last year so if there's anything you need to know just ask. It's an important decision to make. I've spoken to friends about their accommodation in different uni's and whilst this one does seem expensive it is worth it in the long run.

    Hope that's ok.
Yeah thank you for your help. could you also tell me if there is wireless internet connection in John snow accomodation?

If you look to the left of the John Snow Accomodation page, there's an 'application' link underneath the title 'accomodation'.

There is wireless internet in the bar at John Snow. The rest of the internet is through ethernet, you can share the internet through your laptop to any devices you might have wirelessly.

I can't say about Stevo but it should be the same across all colleges. Stevo has a Facebook page so you can post on their and ask. Sorry.

As for primary ed the uni takes into account if you have a car. If you do you'll end up quite far away at a placement, if you don't they'll try and get you as close as possible to halls. My placement is thirty minutes walk away which is about average. The uni does subsidise you if you apply show evidence of how much you've spent getting to placement. The X1 is free for Durham students and the other buses are reasonably priced. The great thing about Stockton is that everywhere's quite cheap, even the taxi's have student fares of around three pounds for anywhere in stockton.

I've spoken to my girlfriend who's in Stevo and she says that you won't (unless you're an internal student) know who you're living with until you get here.

You can always use a wireless router (costs around £15) if you don't want to leave your laptop on all the time.

No, as above, you will always have internet through ethernet but if you wish to have a wireless connection in your room then you would need a router or share your internet connection on your laptop/PC (this method would mean you have to keep your laptop/PC on all the time.)

The internet speed is quite fast. Torrents won't work and you'll struggle with stuff like media fire. You shouldn't try downloading illegal material on uni internet, if you get caught you'll get in trouble with the uni. Games work fine online.

Your unique pin is on any letter that you have received from Durham Uni. Hope this helps!
