Re: Student Loans and NHS Bursary! The amount you get from the bursary will depend on 2 things, whether or not its the degree or diploma that you have applied for and how much your parents earn if you are still living with them.(Original post by SoftMusk)
how much is the nhs bursary? like how much do you get? and i heard that people on nhs funded courses can't apply for a certain type of student finance? im so confused..
Basically, If you are doing the degree then you will be able to get a means tested nhs bursary (this is where parents income comes into it) and apply for a non-means tested but reduced student finance maintanance loan.
For the diploma under the current system you would get a none means tested bursary which is about £6500 i think but cannot apply for the student finance loan.
Starting this year the NHS will be givng students a £1000 grant as well but i'm not quite sure how that works as i don't get it and its still new.
Hope that helped a little

Re: Student Loans and NHS Bursary!
It depends if your going to be living at home or moving away if you move to a certain area e.g. London you may be entitled to more.
Its income assessed so it depends on your household income to what you get.
On student finance you are only entitled to a certain amount due to you having your course payed for.
Has anyone applied for there NHS Bursary yet? IM STILL WAITING ON MY LETTER FROM NHS BURSARY FOR MY APPLICATION NUMBER!!!

Re: Student Loans and NHS Bursary! As far as I'm aware you now apply online for your NHS bursary. They should get in contact with you (email I believe) with your reference number so you can fill in the form on their website. I haven't received mine yet - a lot of other students haven't either. If you're worried you can always send them an email.(Original post by sanu1619)

Re: Student Loans and NHS Bursary! You won't be penalised - many people choose to continue to study(Original post by Dominika4)
Hi! Can anyone help me? I will be starting the university in 2012 (EU) and am having troubles understanding what my repayment obligations will be like! I read all there is on the offical direct.gov website and know I will be expected to start paying back from the April after I graduate and only if earning 21000 or above, but all there is said on the website is based on the assumption that in that time I will be ´earning´ something (above or below 21000), so employed. Does that mean I will HAVE TO enter employment? What if you want to continue in your education? Will the repayment be postponed or will you be financially (or otherwise) penalised for not starting to repaying, so not being employed in the time mentioned?
I am really confused! How does this work? This loan is taken without you having a guarantor (which I find a bit strange) - so, if you are not employed, maybe want to continue in education, but having to start repaying, there is no one (officially) to pay for you (in the case of student loans in my country guarantor is usually a parent and it is possible to postpone repaying it if you want to continue in education - having to repay only once you finished all your studies and there can be a mutual agreement between you and your parents that they will be repaying it instead of you /if you do not have money etc/).
Thus, what happens - not if you are earning below 21000, but - if you are NOT earning AT ALL in the time you are expected to start repaying the loan? Can you go into grad school? If yes, I would be interested in two scenarios: 1) what happens with the loan (and your obligations) during the time you are continuing in your studies and 2) what happens with the loan if you are unemployed (not in school)?
For any information you can provide I should be very grateful!

Your student loan gathers interest (it's a small amount though) so in that sense, the years before you earn 21000 will mean you are adding money onto it rather than paying it off, but other than that, you literally only start paying when you hit that 21000 mark - they don't expect people to earn that much from the day the graduate! -
Re: Student Loans and NHS Bursary!Sorry!!! I didnt mean to press the 'dislike' hand, im still getting used to new touch screen phone! I do like your comment!!!! Lol :-)(Original post by xx-Samantha-xx)
Well from student finance you will get a reduced student maintanance loan that isnt means tested and the NHS send you a letter about the bursary which is means tested because of you doing the degree that you apply for, though the letters don't come until around june time as far as i can remember though apparently people are going to be able to apply online this year
not sure if they let you know by email or not about this as i'm on the previous system of paper forms lol i think this year as well new students will get a £1000 grant ontop of the student finance loan and the bursary

Re: Student Loans and NHS Bursary!
Hi there. I've got a place at Bangor Uni for mental health nursing. I don't know when I start but I do know I'm eligible for a Welsh NHS bursary(bit different from England), which will be means tested, not a problem. Question is, how soon would I get the bursary once I know when I start and how are bursaries paid? Thanks

Re: Student Loans and NHS Bursary!
Hello, sorry to hijack this thread! I was just wondering where you got the figure of a minimum of £65 per week earnings to be classed as independent?
I have spoken to so many advisers on the helpline who have told me different things- including someone who told me I had to be earning a minimum of £250 a week!!!!??
Any info would be great!
Thank you! -
Re: Student Loans and NHS Bursary!
Hi all.
I live in Wales and have been told that I am entitled to an NHS bursary (nursing course). The uni have said they will provide me with all the paperwork three weeks before commencement of the course in March. What I want to know is, how are nhs bursaries paid? Does anyone know? Thanks -
Re: Student Loans and NHS Bursary! They are paid monthly into your bank, it's means tested so will be dependent on your circumstances but we all get a £1000 grant that isn't means tested (which I found out recently isn't paid in a lump sum like I originally thought but split out and added to your monthly payments)(Original post by Mazizoom)

Hi Dani, thanks for getting back to me with that, appreciate it
. Going to have to buy a car with part of the bursary so knowing this will make a big difference

Re: Student Loans and NHS Bursary!(Original post by restoration)
It depends if you think you can live fine off the bursary alone then do it, I am living at home and just living off bursary didn't need the student finance my dad won't let me give him any money though :/ So all I really am paying for is transport, driving lessons at the moment and the rest of my money is just saved/spent on stuff. I have over a grand saved and am not struggling really.
hey im studying in scotland and recieve the NHS bursary but im struggling financially becouse i am not living at home , and im being told i am not entitled to any other form of finance becouse im in receipt of the bursary ?? is this correct -

You don't say whether you are from England or Scotland... Which ever one you are from you should give the student finance company a call and they will be able to tell you whether you can or can't apply for the reduced rate student loan... if you are not living at home this could be up to more than £2000 that you are missing out on that could help you with your situation. Also get in touch with your student office at uni... they should have a financial support team that should be able to help you to see if you are getting what you should. -
Re: Student Loans and NHS Bursary!
there is a section that says other source of income which states about the busary so I am assuming you can apply for them both however the student loan is lower than what it would be without the busary.
Also I was wondering can you apply for student finance before you have applied for the NHS Busary? -
Re:Student Loans and NHS Bursary!I have put my student finance application in but it won't be processed until I've provided proof of NHS bursary I believe but still wanted to get form out the way - so you can but you can't if that makes sense!?(Original post by Jenna2)
