You might be a Muslim, but what you don't understand about Islam, and trust me I have studied this, is that you don't just ignore the consensus of the scholars and choose your own opinion. Consider a few things:
1. You don't no Arabic hence if the Quran was prohibit music in a way the english translation couldn't make out then you wouldn't know.
2. The hadith of your prophet are in Arabic and hence you don't have full access to their meaning
3. I have personally heard scholars quote the saying of the companions of the prophet (who according to muslims have the best understanding of Islam amongst everyone) and they explicitly say that musical instruments, even singing in such a way that beautifies the voice is forbidden.

So for a layman to come and just say I am not convinced and this I will follow my own opinions is wrong in Islam.

This is kinda becoming a thread hijack tbh but just explaining my self, i understand that the quran cannot be translated into another langauge as many parts would no longer make sence but i have looked into this previously and im not just basing it of opinion but also from diffrent arguments i have heard because of this i personally try to stay away from music to be on yhe safe side.

That may be true for all sorts fo things, bt unfottunatly islam doens alow for this sort of debate, either you follow what quran/hadith/ and scholar opinion is or you dont. hadeeth say mohammed himself prohibitted recreational music, playing instruments and wearing silk - becuase presumably thats what arabs used to do to relax and socialise.

so either you pracitce islam as mohammed did or you dont tbh.

If you know the hadith it would help by posting it, this is what im trying to get across is that a lot of people who come up with an argument have little or no evidence to back themselves up. I understand that you have tried to explain it but a solid Hadith would be a lot better.

I'd like to remind OP that uni after all is a place for education and not as you seem to think clubbing and drinking.

As has been already mentioned you can do lots of things while being sober.

Really? I don't believe in multiculturalism - I believe that if you live in my culture you should integrate. Sorry.

rofl did you just completely skip over the bolded bit? Please explain what 'islams' is, as far as i know there's no such thing. Also, you don't own the culture, some people haven't moved to britain to experience culture, they have moved for money, if they want to integrate then they can, if they don't, that's also fine. As long as they're not bothering you, you don't need to be concerned about what they do or do not do. You don't need to tell people to integrate if they don't want to but generally people do integrate anyway.

I don't know why, but i'm finding this quite funny.

Edit: I probably should've made it clear that I'm muslim.

I don't imagine university being any different to a muslim, except no alcohol is involved. No biggie.

You'd be surprised, most of my Muslim friends eventually came round to the dark side :mwuaha: The one thing none of them has ever started to do is eat pork, I guess it's easier to resist?
uni life is studying!

The 'no alcohol' bit was intended for the OP. Sureee, muslims will go and do a lot of things they aren't supposed to. Thats pretty much the norm in most, if not all, religions. Muslims don't profess themselves to be saints.

Well to be honest, I'd prefer alcohol over pork any day. Pigs roll about in mud all day, and eat their own faeces. Not to mention the fact its inundated with worms. No thanks.

anyone tell me what uni life is like for you as a Muslim? Because for everyone else uni life is about clubbing and getting wasted so i was wondering how muslims find uni in terms of fitting in and stuff. Thanks.

Bitch please.

Stop taking the moral high ground, you won't get any friends that way.

More yummy worms jiggling around in your belly.
OP just wait and see, you'll be SHOCKED when you see that some of the most wild clubbers/drinkers, are in fact "Muslim"...so they claim to be.
Concerning all this over what the Quran says or does not say make your own opinion. So many parts contradict and its now common knowledge from scholars that the book was not written in one go and had parts added and taken away over the centuries. One of the oldest copy's on record has sections that under investigation where covered over in Arabic (over the original written language used i believe was Syriac) with bits added and taken away. Quite a few sections especially those over morality have been shown to have heavily edited, with some part taken and added to make it more or less "strict", with also numerous mistranslations from Syriac to Arabic. Cultural traditions from area's that had only recently accepted the word of Islam have also been shown to have been added to the Quran as time went by. "The Satanic Verses" even support this view that parts of the book where not true and taken out at a later date. This all contradicts the teaching however that the books is divine, no human could have written the book themselves and to question anything in the books itself is wrong.

The problem is that while in Christianity they admit their holy books have been changed over time (albeit scholars in the papal city argue this is due to gods influence himself), even quite liberal Muslims get very offended when the same is suggested to be the same for the Quran. If physical evidence is provided it is still seen with a lot of hostility. Scholars have been stabbed and thrown out of buildings by their own students for suggesting this or showing information that supports this view.

At the end of the day make your own mind up on what you can and "can't" do at uni. In my own opinion you have no way to know what "is" or is not the correct thing to follow. Most Muslims i know find its completely acceptable to go to bars, clubs, pubs etc as longs as you don't drink or "fantasize" about the opposite sex there. And when it comes to dancing I've seen the most devout followers of Islam who have stated to myself dancing to none religious music is wrong only to "head bop" or dance to music when they're out and about especially when they think no one they know is around.

However obviously if you do so take into consideration certain Muslims will not take kindly of you doing so and it can also cause problems such a disputes with family members.

You seem like quite a decent person, if only there were more like you.

Muslims are aware that there are those that don't follow properly. Imagine Islam as a classroom, you got the clever ones, the average ones, and the mess about ones. Although Muslim ones may be the 'wildest' clubbers, they definately aren't out in numbers. As we Muslims continuously say... judge on the majority, not the minority, if you must judge.
