Slow vehicles that try to pass you.
Does it annoy you when large lorrys/vans/small family cars try to overtake you in a two lane situation and they take forever. I maybe doing 70mph but they seem to try to over take me while doing 71mph. At the same time there is a huge queue building up behind them. Some vehicles have a speed limiter yet some still try to overtake even when they are close to the speed restrictor.

What do you do speed up, slow down or continue at your speed?

Also bellends that quickly overtake you and more back across your lane to exit the motorway meters before the junction.

In the case of lorries (and other vehicles to a lesser extent) it's much more efficient fuel wise to maintain a constant speed without braking and accelerating. The inconvenience of slowly overtaking someone is justified by their fuel and cost savings.

It doesn't annoy me, no. If I'm quite happy going 70 then I'm quite happy. It's their problem if they want to overtake me or not.

Lorries overtake one another due to variations in load and tyre pressures.

Saying that its their problem is the start of a downward spiral

the HC is clear on this - if another is struggling to get passed then ease off to assist them

LGVs are the worst for this and we end up with elephant racing for miles

All because the one being overtaken has some silly notion that it is not their problem !!

think this way - if you did not ease off on test then what would the examnier do?

I find it funny because my car is so small and old, people from a distance away just think it's going slow, so decide to overtake and find out that actually I'm doing bang on the speed limit. Nevertheless I lift off the accelerator to let them pass.

When a vehicle is doing 71mph to overtake you, you wont ever be doing your 70mph. The decrease in drag would cause you to be within a inch of there rear, in the end you gonna have to overtake again anyway.

HGVs tend to have speedometers that are more accurate than those in cars which tend to over-read.

That might be part of the reason why when you're doing 70mph and you find that a HGV is going faster than you, in reality you may only be doing 65-67mph where that HGV is doing a full 70mph.

Because a driving test is an accurate measure of whether you're capable of driving or not... All it does is test if you can drive within certain parameters and perform manoeuvres which you rarely have to do in driving.

The HC isn't The Bible of driving. Why one should have to slow down because someone else has made a bad judgement call by committing to an overtake and struggling to pull it off is beyond me. It's entirely their fault. They should think in advance whether or not it will inconvenience other road users - if they don't have the ability to do that, they shouldn't be on the road. Why should you slow down and compromise your economy for the sake of some idiot? If they're that desperate to get past you, accelerate and carry out the pass efficiently, or sit behind, don't **** around.

Er...it kinda is. It is what every driver should follow and lays down the laws of the road. Whether you choose to obey them, as per any law, is up to you.

Never happened to me, if it did I'd likely speed up than have my time wasted by a lorry.

Saying that, a mate of mine had a daihatsu hijet, fired on 3 cylinders, suspension and brakes were totally gone, it barely did 50mph, at 60 it shook violently and sounded like it was gonna explode. He used to overtake lorrys on country roads, a near miss in a van where your knees are the crumple zone ****s you up. He was a crazy driver.

Are you saying the HC is the law?
Umm, well yes. When in the HC it says YOU MUST NOT and normally in red, that is a law you must abide by. I thought all this was in the theory test now?!

Well you don't have to abide by it of course, but you it is highly advisable to.

    Take Overtaking section for example:-

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAn...code/DG_070314

Then scroll down, it says YOU MUST NOT and then gives a list with the laws you would be breaking next to it.

My point was the HC isn't a law in itself. It merely sets out guidelines to adhere to Road Traffic Acts and provides general road advice. To address both of my original statements:

    1. The HC isn't the driving Bible - sure, it's helpful when learning; but as I'm sure you know, driving is all about making decisions and correctly judging situations. Therefore, if you abide solely by the HC, treating it as if it were in fact 'The Driving Bible', you would likely be more of a danger on the road than someone who abides by Road Traffic Acts & drives based on their own judgements.

    2. Overtaking; my original point was you should not have to alter your speed (slow down) when someone decides to overtake you. As long as you aren't deliberately preventing someone from overtaking, you aren't in breach of any laws; therefore, it is entirely up to the person overtaking to make a judgement call.

Sure, but I would rather be driving with the weight of the highway code behind me in case of incident than against it. Always best to stick to the book especially in thus quickly forming litigious society where lawyers are all too quick to string you up for damages in court it you get it wrong.

Problem with growing up, the world is not as simple as right and wrong but always best to have the govt behind the decisions you make.
