Re: How come so many people have Macs at Uni?
Biology students at UCL usually lugged windows/lunux laptops around. Many programmes used for data analysis etc simply don't run on a mac and so it isn't a viable option for most science students to do university work on.
Obviously this is going to be different for other courses. Bioinformatics and statistical biology is almost exclusively done on Linux, some programmes may run better on a mac. If one system was universally better for every scenario then there would be no need for the others. -
Re: How come so many people have Macs at Uni?Ridiculously huge, you say?(Original post by Gofre)
I bought mine with a couple of months earnings during my gap year, but a few of the Mac users I've met at uni have bought them with their ridiculously huge maintenance loans. I expect this is a case for a lot of people who get all giddy when the government hands them upwards of a grand each term (after fees). -
Re: How come so many people have Macs at Uni?
I got mine for my 18th Birthday and plan on just bringing it with me, though I have heard of a couple of people who plan to buy one with their maintenance loans/grants. I know one person who actually got a free MacBook Pro from the Disabled Student Allowance!

Re: How come so many people have Macs at Uni?im doing the same, my dad has always had macs and theyve lasted far longer than anything my mum has ever had and its alwyas fast and still looks fab right up untill hes dropped a cup of tea on it 10 years later!(Original post by Benthomas15)
I'll be buying one ready for my first year. Not because of aesthetics or branding though. Purely because i prefer logic over cubase/pro tools.
infact his first mac still works, its just so old doesnt know what internet is. so we all use it to type up things

Re: How come so many people have Macs at Uni?...Which also applies to school students. It's an education discount.(Original post by WelshBluebird)
Part of the reason is that the student discount brings them down to an affordable price.
Certainly when I got my 13" Macbook Pro, the student discount brought it down to around the same price as the other laptops I was looking at. -
Re: How come so many people have Macs at Uni?The older Macs were brilliant, but I'm not sure modern ones are quite as resilient. My friend's got a G4 which probably runs better than my old Macbook.(Original post by mabelbarc)

Re: How come so many people have Macs at Uni?I'm assuming it's because many programmes required for biology are linux based.(Original post by inspiration91)
