Re: Which British university is most well known in the US apart from Oxbridge?Unless someone has done their research, or is an academic, they won't have heard of most of those universities.(Original post by The_Male_Melons)
Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, st.Adrews, Durham, York
A lot of people here and around the world have heard of US universities because they are consistently featured in popular culture (e.g films, TV programs), and because a lot of recent inventions such as Google and Facebook started out at universities such as Stanford Harvard, MIT etc.
An average American would have no reason to know of Durham, York, Aberdeen etc. They may know that William and Kate went to St Andrews, and will likely have heard of the cities of Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh, and be aware that those cities have universities, but that will be the most of their knowledge. -

Durham and York- those picturesque English cities. Perhaps I am wrong on that one.
The rest- they are probably aware of... -
Re: Which British university is most well known in the US apart from Oxbridge?
maybe lse
st andrews because of the royals
that's it unless they are involved in education or the recruitment of people who have studied abroad
and even those two well sub 50% of the general population will have heard of. why should they have? -

Why would LSE be known in the states?(Original post by BO'H)

Re: Which British university is most well known in the US apart from Oxbridge?Well a very popular book series in America has it in it - at least raising the profile(Original post by Xyrish)

It is a respected university for politics and economics, for example, which are particularly 'international' subjects, so more overseas students may be attracted... all these are theories based on the anecdotes of others though and I cannot offer an especially well-researched opinion

Re: Which British university is most well known in the US apart from Oxbridge? What about Imperial? Sciences are very international subjects(Original post by Alexandra's Box)

Please use the search function. This thread has been done many times already. -
Re: Which British university is most well known in the US apart from Oxbridge?Yes, I would have though this too, but judging by the views of others - like some who've been in America - Imperial is actually more popular with the Asian countries. This could have course been completely wrong but it is just what everyone is saying.
Maybe we could check out some graduate stats online.. I'm not really sure where we'd look though.
I am just more confident that LSE is more renowned in America rather than any other uni except Oxbridge. -
Re: Which British university is most well known in the US apart from Oxbridge? It's the same in mot cultures really. The common person isn't going to have heard of specific universities except for the big famous ones which churn out presidents and prime ministers and which are seen as the pinnacle of excellence in that nation e.g. Oxbridge in the UK, Harvard, Yale and Princeton in the USA, University of Tokyo in Japan, TCD in Ireland, McGill in Canada, ANU in Oz etc.(Original post by FDR)

However most academics and big firm employers worth thei salt with know of other highly rated universities like UCL, Imperial etc and if not then they will simply research out some information before judging the merits of your application. What Average Joe who munches cheeseburgers in Detroit diners knows abou UK universities isn't going to influence your career. -
Re: Which British university is most well known in the US apart from Oxbridge?Pretty much any institution with an association with a prominent US figure e.g. Clinton an Oxford, JFK and Yale, Ben Franklin's association with St Andrew's, Harvard's foundation tracing its roots to Cambridge etc. Beyond that the average American has no need to concern themselves with UK universities and let's be fair go into any town centre in the UK and ask an average person to name as many US universities as they can. You'll be lucky to get even Harvard out of them.(Original post by Alexandra's Box)

Re: Which British university is most well known in the US apart from Oxbridge?
None I'm afraid.
All films made in the UK (predominantly targeting the US audience) constantly quote Oxbridge, eg James Bond went to Cambridge, M to Oxford, etc.
Likewise the US only know about their unis, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, etc. plus Oxbridge.
Oxbridge receive a disproportionate amount of publicity in the media, boat race, chess match, rugby, etc.
Take this article. It's about fees in London unis but has a picture of Oxford on it!

The US don't care about UK unis, why care about what they think?
Instead, the views of other parts of the world, Europe and Far East should be of concern.Last edited by dugdugdug; 20-03-2012 at 22:49. -
Re: Which British university is most well known in the US apart from Oxbridge?Imperial is well known in Asian countries (Hong Kong, Singapore and China) as the majority of Asians study sciences and therefore target a top institution.(Original post by Alexandra's Box)

It also happens to be in the most affluent location in London, so international students who obviously can afford the fees, will choose Imperial.Last edited by dugdugdug; 20-03-2012 at 22:03.
