How many calories do you burn on average at the gym?
Hi, I recently joined the gym (never been before) and I'm not really sure how many calories i should be trying to burn per time (i go about 4 times a week) in order to lose weight. I'm hoping to lose about a stone by around June and tone up (I'm 5.3" and about 9 stone 3 atm)

Do people actually make the amount of calories they've burnt the main focus of their workout? :\

If you want to loose weight go do HIIT. Just do it as hard as you can.

The rest is about what you eat- eat less than your maintenance amount, preferably while eating healthy.

If you're only 9st 3 anyway it's gonna take a lot of effort to lose a stone, compared to people of 27 stone who can lose a stone in a couple of weeks. It's all about the calorie deficit though, and I've worked it out for you. 1lb is roughly 3500 calories, which means you need to lose 14x3500 calories (49,000 calories) in roughly 10 weeks. That's a deficit of 700 calories a day, or 4900 per week. Best to think of it as weekly terms because you'll fluctuate so much from day to day and in the end it's just important to have that deficit, even if its 500 one day and 900 the next.

Personally I used to do an hour or more on the cross-trainer because it was easy to record calories (as opposed to free-weight training), and there was no stress on my knees like the treadmill caused (my knees aren't particularly strong). I was never content until I'd burnt at least 500 calories. Anything less felt like a waste of going to the gym. Since I've stopped using the gym I've stopped the cardio, but I'm doing regular resistance training at home which burns a lot of calories. With cardio your body gets used to the stress and adjusts so manage it better. It's endurance so you have time to adjust, which eventually means you have to do more to burn the same calories. With weight training you know more or less what you need to do to burn calories, it's just not as easy to record. Don't be worried about looking muscular if you do weight training; girls have like 1/16th the testosterone that men have, so it's so much harder to build muscle. You'll end up looking more toned though which one of your aims.

Finally, where have booked the girls holiday to?

Calorie burn and weight loss is a side effect from being fit, just train properly, and eat properly.

Knowing your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the key to knowing how many calories you should, or shouldn’t eat in a day. Simply put, your BMR is the minimum amount of calories your body requires on a daily basis to complete its basic functions (i.e. breathing, sleeping keeping your heart beating or regulating your internal temperature). Your BMR is dependent upon your age, height, and weight and gender. If you’ve noticed that every year, it becomes harder to eat whatever you want and stay slim, then, you may have discovered that your BMR decreases as you age. The good news is that a regular routine of cardiovascular exercise (walking, jogging, swimming, aerobics, etc) can increase your BMR hence increasing your ability to burn calories

Roughly 90-100 minutes - which seems quite slow.

It honestly isn't hard at all to do 50km - 100km is quite challenging however.

I've only been using a cycle for about two months, though. I expect those that've done it for longer would manage 100km quite easily.

So you averaged between 18-20 mph, that's alright. Try that outside on a bike, on a road, thatll sky-rocket down to about 13/14 lol

    right, i see.
i myself have can do about 20 km which takes me around 40 mins. After this, i just find it hard to stay on the bike because of exhaustion and boredom.

i often wonder how cyclists manage to stay on the bike for hours.

I have a cycle and a treadmill at home, so I just listen to either lectures for university or watch television during it or something.

The main reason I stop is that the seat becomes uncomfortable, rather than being bored or my legs getting tired.

Are you talking about cycling on a machine bike, or outside. Because outside you never get bored it's impossible! 20km isn't far anyway, I do that everyday.

I usually aim to burn around 1000 calories in each session (sometimes more if I have overeatten). The most I have burnt is about 1400 calories

To burn 1000 calories I do either of the following

    70 mins on the steeper
60 mins on the treadmill (about 11km) and 10 mins on the steeper
30mins on the treadmill (about 5.5 - 6 km) and 45 mins on the steeper

Then afterwards I do weight lifting

How the hell can people stay at the gym for more than an hour?!

I burn around 400-500 calories by doing 20 mins HIIT on the treadmill and 15 mins on crosstrainer.

I don't have time for more.

I think I do 400kcal on top of maintenance at the moment - I'm getting into running and run 4 miles a time, which according to an article I read should burn 0.75 x body weight in lb per mile run above maintenance calories. Obviously it's approximate, so I've rounded down a bit.

    thanks for the replies
atm im doing about 400-500 per visit, every other day using steppers, cycling, cross trainer and tread mill along with a bit of weight training though I've only just started that and don't really know what I'm doing!
So hopefully it will have some affect in a couple of months.

    Im 21, Male, 5'3, 12 stones.

I normally go into the gym with the intention of burning atleast 500 calories, I normally do:

30 minutes HIIT on the Treadmill (240 calories)
30 minutes on the Cross trainer (130 calories)
30 minutes on the Rowing machine (130 calories)

and a little bit of weights just to tone up and work on resistance.
