University of York Firmers 2012!

Re: University of York Firmers 2012!I know plenty of law students in Halifax (effectively main campus), and most of them walk to Hes East. Its about a 10-15 minute walk (I think it feels longer thanks to the yellow brick road which goes on for ages). There's also 3 buses, 2 of which are every 10 minutes so getting over there isn't a problem.(Original post by admbeatmaker)
I'm having trouble deciding which accommodation/college I should choose. Maybe you two first years could help me? Thanks
I'm going to be doing law and as you probably know, the course is on Hes East. Now, I have two choices that I like. First, join Derwent and get a catered en-suite which will save me around £20-30 a week, but I'll have to jump the unibus to get to classes. The other choice is, go for new Langwith or Goodricke and spend an extra £30 a week (for food) and be right next to the law department, I'm just worried that being next to my department it'll make me lazy and therefore not explore the campus much, whereas being in Derwent I'd be more encouraged to get around.
Do you know many law students in colleges on Hes West, any in Derwent particularly?
Any help would be great.
People in Goodricke currently doing law say they feel a bit isolated as they don't really have to go to main campus ever, but they are the only college over there at the minute, and there will be a lot more over there when you come (sports centre etc) so I think things will mix up a bit more.
If it's down to just getting there, there really isn't a problem, plenty of people in Goodricke at the moment have to travel to main campus. I don't know anybody in Derwent but I know it's meant to be one of the more social colleges.
To be honest, if the application system is anything like last year, you'll be lucky to get anything you want and will probably end up in Halifax...
Sorry for the essay, hope some of what I said was helpful

They've changed the application system this year, according to one of the student newspapers. They're going to release accomodation in blocks so as to give people more choice so it might be slightly better.
In addition on the Hes East point, I live in Old Langwith ATM which is going to be Derwent next year and I do Computer Science which is pretty much next to the Law and Management Building. The walk's about 10 minutes from there and the bus is fairly reliable, it also feels more connected to Campus as a whole but that's only this year as Langwith isn't on Hes East yet.
So really either would suit but IMO I'd go for the catered option because it takes a lot of weight off your mind I've found, particularly if you have a lecture intense course, which I imagine law is, it can be very helpful and the food isn't awful by any means
. Hope that helps

I was just looking at the progress photos of new Langwith on Hes East and it looks amazing! I really want that or Goodricke. Anyone else wanting those colleges?
Also, to anyone already at York, how are York with people who just miss the required grades by a few marks?
Thank you

Task! Psychology (AAA)(Original post by LostHorizons)
It really depends on the course! What are you hoping to study?

Name:Alice
Subject: Sociology, BBB
Accommodation: I was thinking James for accommodation but it seems all the other soci students are applying there.
This will be good when you make friends and stuff but I want to meet other people from different subjects not just go to lectures/seminares with soci people and live soci people.....but then again James looks damn good.....
Maybe Vanbrugh...Derwent? Somewhere cheap!
Looking forward to: the course, city and the people!

They're usually quite good with stuff like that, though they might change your offer slightly, that's what happened to me when I changed from straight Computer Science to the CS-Maths course before I'd got grades. Hope it works out for you(Original post by razorfin)
I've just emailed York asking them if I can change my conditional offer from History/Politics to History/Economics.
Hope they say yes, but wont be annoyed if they say nay.
ALSO, hit my conditional offer grades today too
