    Name: Kyle
    Age: 18
Course: Chemistry (MChem) - looking to do a year in industry.
    Offer: ABB (A in chemistry)
Favourite accommodation: Alcuin as it's close to chemistry buildings. Derwent might be an option too, not quite sure, but i'm put off by the asbestos. Probably going self-catered even if I was in derwent. Any advise is welcome ;D
    Asbestos???????? :O
I was considering going catered derwent....I didn't know about this...or is it course-related?

Yeh haha, it's not course related, it's just present amongst the construction of the college. It shouldn't be a problem, there are quite a few buildings that have asbestos (and you wouldn't even know it). It was used in 1950s, 1960s, as it was fireproof. However, it's use was halted due to health risks. To my knowledge, it's only present in the Derwent college as the link states below.

So you're not going to derwent catered on that basis? Maybe I'll reconsider then...?

Seriously? I've worked around asbestos, there are many different types, most of the no problem. Even the bad stuff is only a problem in powder form in the air. Do you honestly think they'd let students stay there if there was a potential problem? I personally doubt it.

Anyone who uses the word "courting" is immediately about 50x more awesome.

Never said it was a major problem, just a con. I might still go Derwent because it is still so much cheaper, and the community spirit is just so much better than ALL the other colleges. Maybe Derwent self catered is for me to save my pounds.

EDIT. And seen as i'm doing Chemistry, might also help me salvage some kind of social life from the work load!

    Me three.

Derwent is so much cheaper and is very central and near the History department in Vanbrugh.

And if the rooms are a tad spartan who cares? You're only in them for about 9 months.

Spartaness bothers me not. I'm going home every few weeks(have a kid) so I could use the extra money for travelling

Oh wow that'll make life tougher! How far do you have to travel to see the little one?

My motives are less noble so to speak, my parents are paying for my accommodation rather than my taking out the maintenance loan so I'm trying to save then some money!

Hi! I'm doing FTV too I think I've decided to go on the main campus, as I think I'll feel really closed in if I live on the same campus that I go to lectures on, sort've like I never go anywhere else! But yeah, that's just my choice.. Think I'll be going for James or New Vanbrugh

A lot of people doing TFTV live on Goodricke to be near the department - it's very nice (ensuite, huge rooms) but a bit expensive.

As for general 'spartanness' tbh when I first applied to York I 'really' wanted an ensuite but tbh didn't really need one...

Thanks for the advice ;D It's reassuring to have someone that's at York. You in Derwent?

Na man, I lived in Alcuin for my first year. Ensuite in 2009 was ridiculously cheap to what they're asking for it now. I had an alright time but I would have applied somewhere different (probs Vanbrugh) were I applying again this year. Derwent has the most 'distinct' college atmosphere for definite, closely followed by Vanbrugh imo.

can you compare the atmosphere to james.
sonehow i still find myself stuck between the two from time to time.
what puts me a bit off derwent is that it's supposed to be kinda of a party college
