Re: Where does modern day anti-semitism come from? That's quite an interesting post, Jewish people do have a major impact in finance as well as many other areas. Many jewish parents encourage their children to go in to areas such finance/medicine/law as they produce stable high earning jobs. It's been that way for a long time and I think it is certainly a reason for antisemitism.(Original post by Perseveranze)

Maybe it's coincidence, who knows
Anyways, we have problems with Israel, not Jews.
There's been a lot of posts about antisemites being jealous and I completely agree with this. For such a tiny population, we do see a lot of Jews in business, politics, media, finance, medicine, law, engineering, science and pretty much everything else even in acting and comedy. I think this certainly does scare people especially muslims as they are a much larger population and there are few seen in the areas mentioned.
Obviously Israel is another reason for antisemitism. It's a country rapidly developing and in just 60 years as a jewish state it's one of the leading countries in technology, science and medicine. It's done more than most other countries have done in much longer periods of time than that.
South park, Family Guy and the Simpsons as well as many other comedies tend to make antisemitic jokes. I'm sure this doesn't help there case much either despite the fact that the writers of these programmes are Jewish.(Original post by orcprocess)

Re: Where does modern day anti-semitism come from?Good post.(Original post by thurin)
I am not convinced by that logic.
The religious and tribal conflicts in many African states are rife, but the Western media do not report on them as nearly as much as the Israel-Palestine conflict. The provenance of sectarian conflicts cannot be held as the prime motivations for the Western media's interest.
The relationship between Israel and Anglo-American politics is the main factor why the Israel-Palestine conflict is so reported in the media. The ethnocentrism and force of the Israeli/Zionist lobby in the USA motivates Western interest. Darfur and North Korea bear little to no impact on Western politics, so why should the media or political elite care as much? You only have to see the press coverage of the Mali coup d'état 3 days ago - it received one short paragraph in the Guardian newspaper yesterday - to see why certain news stories have more leverage in the West.
But you're right on the salient point of religion increasing the fervour on both sides round the Israel-Palestine conflict. When Israel and Palestine, as theocratic political entities, become conflated with and reduced to representatives of Judaism and Islam respectively, of course the conflict will become more widespread and the views held by Western observers more fanatical.
However, I wouldn't say that North Korea and others have no impact on Western politicswhatsoever. Plus, the Zionist lobby in Washington is funded mainly by Christian fundies, and so there's still a religious aspect to why it is so powerful and why the issue has such a bearing on Western politics. -

Most muslims here in the Uk, well the young ones just hate jews because of israel. It has never occured to them there may be jews who do not agree with israel.
It's like hating all Muslims for the barbaric genocidal regime in Sudan, or all atheists for the Soviet regime's millions of victims, or blaming all Japanese people for a bad Nintendo game (which, I hasten to add, there hasn't been yet).
I'm sure if there were other Jewish states in the world, that were less controversial than Israel, idiots would have less reason to hate Jews, or at least appear more irrational than they do now. As it is, centuries of persecution by Christians and Muslims throwing Jews out of their countries, Jewish states are few and far between.Last edited by navarre; 25-03-2012 at 22:40. -
Re: Where does modern day anti-semitism come from?Disney is but a symptom of a phenomenon which occured in europe during the process of Jewish emancipation during the early 19th century. It stems from the failed expectations of emancipation, ie that Jews would assimiliate into christian culture and leave behind all forms of Jewish particularisms. Of course Jews did not do this. Previously Jews could convert to christianity (as many did) and they were more or less ok. The influenece of Darwin during the 19th century produced ideas that Jews could not change and were fundamentally inherrently Jews (as one anti-semite put it- 'rotten') Poeple had alwys looked for reasosn to ahte Jews and now they had some fuel. Jews became associated with all of societies ills. Thye were conspicuos in Capatalistic trades (Rothschilds ect) which cretaed anti-jewish fraction of the extreme left- but also many Jews turned to socialism and communism because they wanted a society where no one would judge them for being a Jew- acceptence. Both of these things added fuel to anti-semite fire. By the 1870s many Jews realised that Gentiles would not accept their particularities and therefore Zionism (A Jewish pride) became prominent. - more fuel to fire. The issue of Israel is still very controversal in Jewish circles (I am a secular Jew) because in the Talmud there is scripture that syas Jews are not allowed to seize the promised land. It must be given by god due to the covenent- so Zionism is controversal even for Jews.
I think however there is a differnece between making a Jewish characture and being an anti-semite. We all know Dickens' fagen is a good example of a bad Jew- but there are other examples. The Simpsons has Apu, that Italian guy ect- they are charactures rather than racist remarks. -

Wrote this on another thread. Same topic pretty much:
"The so called Left media in this country are responsible for a hell of a lot of anti-Semitism. Israel's political decisions, and attacks on Palestine and their people are not always sanctioned by the wider Jewish community and not even by the liberal majority in Israel. But do the Guardian and New Statesman acknowledge this? Of course not. They are no different to the backwards state media in Muslim countries who attack all Britons over the decisions of our politicians. Shame on them for making my über-Liberal self ashamed to be a reader of those publications."
