Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 SocietyAlmost every other country 'gets' Eurovision and it really helps to bring people together in a fun way. Sweden in particular really handle it well and they too will be playing the songs months afterwards - which I believe can only be a good thing. It's really positive that there is an annual event involving all European countries that's light hearted entertainment where people enjoy something each country does. The majority of the UK population has such a negative view of the contest which is out of sync with the rest of the EU, it's a real shame.(Original post by Ysolt)
Eurovisions something that makes me stop supporting the EU.
Its also sad when you go on holiday to like Greece in summer and there still listening to the Eurovision songs months after...
OK, I will give it another proper chance(Original post by secretmessages)
I thought that too at first, but the more I listen to it, the more I like it. It may not be a traditional Eurovision-y type song, but I think it could do quite well.
Besides, nothing can be as awful as San Marino's entry:
Hahaha, thank you for bringing the San Marino entry to my attention, that's certainly incredible. -
Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 SocietyYes, that thing was awesome if rather obscure.(Original post by Ra Ra Ra)
There's a society? Yay!
On a slightly different note, did anyone else want the entry with the sand pictures (Ukraine?) last year to win? I'm still kinda disappointed that Azerbaijan won...it seems a little dull
anyway Ill be watching eurovision, though i think the best year was the year after lordi won when everyone had wierd wacky zany acts that just made you go WTF?
Want more of them this year. -
Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 SocietyOh and as if most of the drivel from the UK charts and any grime **** is any better to listen to? God ****in help you, birdbrain.(Original post by Ysolt)

Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 SocietyWhen I said political game, I meant 'vote for countries you're friendly with'. I don't think it's an actual song contest like it used to be, personally.(Original post by robocop1andahalf)

No it isn't a massive political game, it's just a circus of over choreographed shows.
I used to love this Eurovision thing and really enjoy until some time 5-10 years ago. -
Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 SocietyYES! They are the only act I remember except the french one which had men, who I think were gay, running around in circles.(Original post by Electronica)

YES! They are the only act I remember except the french one which had men, who I think were gay, running around in circles.
San Marino's entry this year is utterly terrifying.
Another odd one this year, Rambo Madeus for Montenegro:
Basically what you'd get if Ras B Nesbitt's Baltic cousin swallowed a thesaurus.
Sweden are the bookies favourite this year. But I have a feeling that Iceland and Italy will provide close competition.Last edited by El Nombre; 07-05-2012 at 18:24. -

Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 Society
As long as there are some hot blonde eastern european/scandanavian women prancing around half naked on the stage signing some crappy euro dance pop song out of tune then I will be happy.
Does anyone know if it's just the UK that treats this competition as the joke it is or does the rest of Europe actually think it's important and a great honour to win? -
Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 Societyit's only really the UK, Ireland and the countries who can't afford to host it (Montenegro, San Marino) that treat it like a joke, the Eastern Europeans and the Scandinavians take it ultra seriously (esp. Sweden, they have an entire X factor style show just to determine who the winner is!)(Original post by Shabalala)

Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 SocietyOh go away with the ignorant exaggerated bull****. At least there have been professional juries in the last three years to balance out any suspected jingoistic voting by phone lately. If everything is this "vote for countries you're friendly with" utter nonsense please supply firm evidence and tell us then who's going to win this year based on that. Or is this just more pathetic British bad loser moaning?(Original post by Converse Rocker)

Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 SocietyDid I catch you on a bad day or something? You seem really annoyed at my opinion on Eurovision, of all the things to kick off at.(Original post by robocop1andahalf)

I don't have firm evidence, because it's just my opinion based on what I've seen in the past few years. For example Spain and Portugal tend to award each other maximum points, we normally give high scores to Ireland etc. Maybe that's just coincidental that they really like the songs above all the others, but that seems to happen a lot. If you have a different opinion, fine, it's just a song contest that I have very little interest in.
I'm not moaning about losing, because I hardly watch it, if at all. Chill out man, no need for your little outburst there.Last edited by Converse Rocker; 10-05-2012 at 22:11. -
Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 SocietyIreland does not treat it like a joke. We have a competition for the entry. Jedward have won the last two years because they're very popular and the opposing songs are generally average ballads at best. But there is still a great deal of interest in it and huge support behind the act in all media. Admittedly there have been really ****e ballads sent through and Dustin, but that doesn't mean its treated as a joke. And yes we absolutely cannot afford to host it, but why then are we sending jedward if we are so afraid of winning? They got by far the highest finish we have had in long time last year and have a good chance of finishing high again this year, song isn't as catchy but they're more popular in Europe now. We have hosted it more times than anyone else and were extremely proud to do so though it was always a financial struggle it went well. Think memorable intermission act and you think Eurovision 1994 riverdance! So influential that it launched it globally.(Original post by ConnorB)
it's only really the UK, Ireland and the countries who can't afford to host it (Montenegro, San Marino) that treat it like a joke
Id also like to mention an issue that comes up every year here and causes outrage. The UK will give us 10 points and we will give them barely any or none. It is seen as if the UK is being neighbourly which is being thrown back in their faces. The real deal here is that there is a huge proportion of British people of an Irish background, now more than ever as emigration there is picking up. But its not the same in reverse, there isn't anywhere near the same proportion of British living here. Jedward have a fanbase in the UK who will vote for them. The UK act has no fanbase here. So the exact same thing will happen again. Migration is a big factor in how countries vote. Irelands top points will all go to eastern European countries because there are so many here. -

Romania or Greece to win. -
Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 Society(Original post by Converse Rocker)
Anyone else kind of disappointed that Eurovision has become a massive political game?
My mum says when she was young, the Eurovision used to be great and countries mostly based their votes on the song/singer as opposed to the countries they border/friendly with. Every year we know that:
Spain votes for Portugal and vice versa (might also vote for France and Italy)
Iceland votes for the Scandanavian countries (Norway, Sweden and Denmark) and vice versa
Serbia vote for places like Bosnia, Slovakia, Slovenia etc and vice versa
Russia vote for Georgia and vice versa
Greece vote for Cyprus and vice versa
UK vote for Ireland and if we're lucky they give us their vote too! It just becomes boring!
and yes it was 2007
