I tried looking for a York postgraduate applicant thread, and decided to address the lack of one Who else has applied? Currently waiting to hear back about my MSc Cyber Security application!

Applied and got an unconditional offer for PhD in Medieval History. Just waiting on scholarship news (which should be next week). Not holding out much hope, though.

I have an offer to read the MA in Medieval Studies at York. Alas I've been turned down for the AHRC RPM scholarship but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for other scholarship options. Otherwise I've got no idea how I'm going to pay for it.

Good for you! I was interested in the Medieval History MA course at York before I went elsewhere- Med History and Studies are closely linked. Its a good course and a pretty incredible faculty.

Good luck with your search for money. I'm in a similar position.

Have you applied to other Uni's?

Yes, very. The course was only announced perhaps 6 weeks ago. Good luck for the scholarship!

Thank you for the luck- I am going to need it! Like I say, not getting my hopes up and even considering the armed forces as an alternative.

Armed forces? I considered that but a recruiting Colonel told me that he thought that the Economist was too heavy a read... that and I couldn't do that while attached. Dual nationality also makes it difficult

So, it's fundamentally about both stopping bad guys from eavesdropping on, disrupting or preventing communication between people, and showing that what we currently have is inadequate. Whether that's real time conversations, or getting at stored information! The course involves a lot of know-thy-enemy stuff, as well as the maths behind classical/modern code making and breaking. It's trying to appeal to both corporate/government policy makers and future researchers (like me, hopefully ). One module is a mock conference!

Kind of- certainly more GCHQ's line than SIS/SS. Think Signals rather than Int. Corp
I'm American, and also British by choice. Which part of the Forces are you thinking of?

I see. And you put it in a way that I can understand!

You say that you want to go on to research. What do you mean? Academic? Sorry for all the questions. Trying to understand the course- should probably just look it up on the York website.

R.A.F. and Navy probably. Apparently, I'm too old for Officer training in the army, which is fair enough. I'm probably too slight for it anyway. Although, I have just watched the first episode of Sandhurst on BBC... I'm not as wimpy as some of them... not anymore, anyway.

Thanks, it's a good indicator of future academic teaching success which indirectly answers your question. Government research would be very interesting, but my loyalties may end up being brought into question, so free/academic research is probably the best

Really?! I find its best to be as cryptic as possible. That way I can maintain the illusion of being very intelligent, when in reality I'm just a bit of a t****r.

May I ask why you can't be a submariner?

Ah, yes. You'll probably be based somewhere else. Although, the Kings Manor library has a lot on medieval architecture, so... I don't know.

I don't mind you asking. I have entered in for both the AHRC and Wolfson scholarships (collectively and imaginatively known as 'AHRC Wolfson'). Currently being decided by committee. Hopefully my ideas and proposal are good enough.

Currently going mad waiting for their answer- almost don't care if its bad news, as I'll be able to get on with other things!

There can be a difference. Look at the works of Lucan- notoriously difficult to get your head around.
