Eating Disorder Group
Hey

I've created an eating disorder group at my university (Exeter -- come join if you want). It's in its foundation stages at the moment and we're awaiting some sponsorship but it's going ahead. I was just wondering, how can I try and appeal to those who are suffering? When I was anorexic, I just wanted to be left alone, so approaching people who look anorexic isn't exactly tactful. Any ideas on how to promote it? I'm selling it from an alternative perspective because I want people to feel they can trust me -- no one is a professional, no doctors or nurses. Just me, a recovered anorexic, so they know that there is life beyond an ED.
Any ideas on how I can promote it so that people will come to it? Thanks x -
Re: Eating Disorder Group
Have you looked up about SRSH (Student Run Self Help)... They run self help groups for students with EDs and are an invaluable organisation and I'm sure would be more than happy to help, and also work in conjunction as they have money etc. sorted.
Regards to promotion, I suppose it's emphasising that it's a non-judgemental, purely supportive group and it's not meant to be counselling or anything like that, just a friendly and safe environment? -
Re: Eating Disorder GroupSRSH was one of the options but they weren't able to sponsor us, so we've gone with beat, although we're not directly affiliated; we're getting sponsorship from them but not actually promoting ourselves as part of them. I think it may scare some people away from coming if they knew it was being funded by beat.(Original post by sophie_snail)

Re: Eating Disorder GroupYeah. We're still in the process of getting the admin done but hopefully it will be up and running in the Autumn and you're more than welcome to come! There's no pressure; I just thought it would be good for there to be a group run by someone who's experienced an ED because the docs don't usually 'get' us x(Original post by butterfly12)
Hi is this group still going? I'm living in Exeter atm but studying with Open Uni and have an ED and I would really appreciate a support group atm x -
Re: Eating Disorder GroupA blog? That's a great idea and I could get it put up on both the uni and SU website! Awww thanks(Original post by Rugar)
facebook, twitter, blog, shout about it.
you are doing great work. I ran a support group when i was at uni and i felt it did a lot of good. Lots of challenges and ethical worries at times, but keep it going
I know it will be a challenge and will make me face some of my demons but there's such a need for it at uni x

I'm willing to help you out with this if you want. I have lately made a habit out of setting up social media profiles and portfolios for good causes. PM me if interested. -
Re: Eating Disorder Group
How's this going. I'm coming to Exeter Uni in Autumn after having to pull out of my uni last year because of anorexia so this group sounds amazing.
On a different note, do you know anything about the uni/county services for Eating Disorders as I'm still struggling with recovery and worried I may crash again when I get to uni.
Thanks

Re: Eating Disorder Group
I was kinda in the same position as you, and it's not the best service, I came here feeling much better, then had a bit of a relapse but was referred to this group therapy place where they said "you need more help than we can give you have an severe eating disorder, we are referring you on..." that was 3 months ago......"my gp keeps ringing and they say I'm on the list...", I came from london though and that was obviously really good step down outpatient treatment so maybe I'm expecting too much, heyho...I joined OA and i'm trying to focus on getting healthy with the tools I used last time in recovery! If you need anyone to talk to when you get to Exeter, message me x

You just got to keep on at it. You with the student health centre? It took 6 months for my referral to come through!(Original post by butterfly12)

Register with the student health centre and get an appointment asap. The sooner you go the sooner you can get the ball rolling.(Original post by allbritishgirl)

There's also support on campus from wellbeing so worth making an appointment with them as well

Re: Eating Disorder GroupThere's not a lot, hence I'm starting a group for it. There's nothing ED-specific in Exeter or the uni, as far as I know.(Original post by allbritishgirl)

Re: Eating Disorder Group
The idea for the group was actually from one of the GPs when she read my medical history and realised I'd been recovered for years. She said that there's a real demand and need for something like this and the Guild approved too. We're now just waiting on contact from beat BUT if anyone would like to meet up and receive some 'unofficial' support and chats until we have a room, group name etc., please feel free to message me and I'll give you my Exeter email address. x

Meadow house has a group therapy thing which is also where you get referred to fit CBT and the like. But it's tiny hence the mahooosive waiting lists! Most other things are residential only from experience.(Original post by jazzykinks)

For a biggish city it is pretty poor!

Re: Eating Disorder Group
Find a specialist who focuses on excessive consuming conditions. Most doctors who work with consuming conditions practice intellectual behavior therapy, which details the actual problems that cause the behavior. They address the individual's behaviour toward consuming as well as problems around body image and self-esteem.
