Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
OVERRATED: Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream.
It's really not the second coming of Jesus, people. The same thing can be achieved by emptying out your biscuit tin into a blender with some economy-grade ice cream.
UNDERRATED: Mackies.
Seriously one of the richest, creamiest ice creams ever, it's not only affordable, but it's local too! Shows the fundamental, elemental ice cream at it's finest.
UNDERRATED AND OVERRATED: PIES? -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
OVERRATED:
Its a hard one to call. One the one hand you have Shepherd's Pie. Everyone rants and raves about it, but I much prefer Cottage Pie (with beef, not lamb). But there is also Apple Pie. Yeah, it's nice and all, but there's Apple Crumble (the clearly better option) as well as Summer Fruit pies etc. Pie desserts usually have way too much pie-to-filling ratio, and a solid 3 foot thick wall of crust to break through. (A mention also needs to be had for Mince Pie's. They may be festive, but they aren't really that great... and puff-pastry mince pies are so much better).
UNDERRATED:
Lemon Meringue Pie is rarely seen on menus near me, but is a lightfully soft and refreshing way to end a meal. Chicken and Leek/Chicken and Mushroom pies can also be a delightful change to the standard beef filling in pies, particularly in pubs when they do them well.
UNDERRATED AND OVERRATED:
Mushroom side-dishes/starters/recipes. (basically mushroom items...) -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
overrated - battered mushrooms. they just go soggy, and the textures of the batter and the shroom are just wrong together...
underrated - chicken and mushroom pie. that creamy sauce goes sooooo well with the shrooms.
way to cook potatoes? -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
OVERRATED: DAUPHINOISE.
Dauphinoise this, Dauphinoise that. It's tasty, sure, but GOD ALMIGHTY. CHANGE THE RECORD. They're not THAT good.
UNDERRATED: RUMBLEDETHUMPS.
Don't let the fact it looks like a dog's dinner dissuade you. IT TASTES LIKE ANGEL LOVE.
UNDERRATED AND OVERRATED OF: BREAKFAST OPTIONS? -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!Underrated: Poached egg on toast. Really quite a divine option, perfect for a late one on a sunday - not to filling before that huge roast dinner. Perfectly poached yolks are heaven.(Original post by TotoMimo)

UNDERRATED AND OVERRATED OF: BREAKFAST OPTIONS?
Overrated: Pop Tarts. I just don't like these in terms of Breakfast, for dessert..then yum! Lovely jubbly. But far too sweet upon a morning, and will hardly sustain me for long...
over and under of food on the go (kinda stuff for a car journey) -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
OVERRATED: McDonalds. Now, at just about every services you'll encounter a McDonalds Arch shining like a lighthouse beacon, urging you to grab some drive-through grub because your house is over twelve minutes away. When in reality, how freaking messy is a Big Mac? All the fiddly napkins, dip labelling and receipts end up causing chaos in the car, and the vehicle proceeds to stink Maccy Dees for the following week.
UNDERRATED: Fruit!! Seriously, it sounds lame, but fruit is a seriously underrated travel-food. Not all fruits, of course - Plums, Peaches and Pomegranates are obvious apocalypse-grade messy. But the likes of an apple, pear or a punnet of berries - it's a self-contained, easy, one-hand food that you don't have to worry about bits flying everywhere, crumbling debris, or ingredients spilling all over the car. And most fruits are eat-all affairs - meaning less crap all over the car to clean out.
OVERRATED AND UNDERRATED OF: STANDARD HAMBURGERS? -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
overrated - big mac. seriously, really not that great. mostly bread, lettuce and sauce. ew.
underrated - steak and cheese sub with bbq sauce and pickles and onion. not a burger, but tastes like one for less than 400 calories.
...sandwiches? -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
Overrated - prepacked sandwiches. A convenient choice they may be on lunch breaks etc but they generally don't taste too good. Also fairly expensive for what they are.
Underrated - homemade sandwiches. Not just a lot more cost effective, but making them at home means you can decide on type of bread and from an endless list of ingreidients from the supermarket. They taste many times better than the prepacked crap.
Over or underrated frozen food products? -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
Overrated - Micro chips - They're awful in comparison to normal chips and nobody is THAT lazy that they can't bung some in an oven.
Underrated - They chicken nuggets from costco - Gah! I normally don't like chicken nuggets but these are really delicious and amazingly cheap for good quality nuggets. They claim to be made from 100% free range chicken and are quite big for chicken nuggets. -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
OVERRATED: Babybell and Cheesestrings. They taste like crap, yet every kid loves em! Ah the novelty of peeling and stripping ey.
UNDERRATED: Mascarpone. It's something people rarely use at home when baking, but they really should. Dairylea Triangles Extra Light are also pretty good, great on toast and low calories (especially for cheese!) A mention should also go to Swiss Gruyere for fondues. The French/Swiss do it best. End of.
OVERRATED/UNDERRATED: Breads! -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
OVERRATED: Ciabatta.
Usually when a "gourmet" limited edition burger or sandwich comes along, it's usually shoved on a ciabatta roll. Why? Ciabatta is porous and impossibly dry.
UNDERRATED: Plain ol' Pitta Breads!
Not only are they a natural "pocket" for fillings, their unique density means they can be used as bases for "pizzas" or even as "soldiers" if cut up - they don't even need toasting for that! Immense! Plus a regular pitta is about as nutritionally denting as an average slice of thick white bread.
OVERRATED AND UNDERRATED OF: PRODUCTS INCLUDING CARAMEL? -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!Overrated: Twix. They're good but they just seem the dull option for me. With such BETTER chocolate bars out there, I'd never really go out and choose a twix above all others. If you offer me one though, I'll still eat it.(Original post by TotoMimo)

OVERRATED AND UNDERRATED OF: PRODUCTS INCLUDING CARAMEL?
Underrated: Caramel popcorn. I love it, it gives popcorn like a harder texture with it's sweet layer, giving the popcorn such better suckability! And tasty nomnomnom.
Over and under of: MEATS -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
OVERRATED: Chicken.
Now there's nothing WRONG with chicken. Chicken rules. But it's overrated to hell. Why is it the "go to" meat when people make certain dishes? Why is it always a Chicken Goujon? A Chicken Kiev? A Chicken Curry? Chicken is tasty but in the realms of meat, it actually ranks fairly low on the richter scale of nomness.
UNDERRATED: (Pork) Liver.
Controversial, sure, but a cheap, delicious protein with a flavour completely unique - like a super-concentrated venison, it has a rich taste some people can't take (hence the pairing of the strong sidekicks, bacon and onion). It is also gram for gram one of the single most nutritious meats you can eat.
OVERRATED AND UNDERRATED OF: Chocolate bars with TWO PIECES/FINGERS! -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
OVERRATED:
KitKat. Yeah it's nice, but JEEZE, stop going on about it! And Twirl, its just plain old chocolate, have a Time Out instead!
UNDERRATED:
Kinder Bueno. I hadn't had one before, thinking they'd be just the same as the egg, but damn they're pretty good!
OVERRATED AND UNDERRATED OF: One Pot Desserts! (the ones you get with the yoghurts in supermarkets) -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
OVERRATED: Muller Rice. I don't know why these get such a good rap - Ambrosia Rice totally rapes them in the taste and texture department.
UNDERRATED: Marks and Spencer Count on Us Muffin Desserts. Seriously guys, you'd turn up your nose at these "healthy" desserts all sub 150 kcals, but there are lemon/blueberry/chocolate mousse, bits of muffin, sauce and all manner of sexy delights in here, and it all tastes SO FRUCKIN GOOD. Give them a chance!
OVERRATED AND UNDERRATED OF: CHEWY SWEETS? -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!UNDERRATED: Fruitella. I love these, often overlooked for..I don't know why! Perhaps because they contain the word fruit. And that's not exciting.(Original post by TotoMimo)

OVERRATED AND UNDERRATED OF: CHEWY SWEETS?
OVERRATED: Chewits Xtreme Sour. I like em, but..they're not EXTREME sour. With their black packet with neon green..they even LOOK sour. But disappointed each time.
Over and under of..Jacket potato fillings? -
Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
Overrated: Grated CheddarCheese. Now, this sounds like I'm slating cheese. I am not. But what makes grated cheese my overrated choice is because it's ALWAYS part of the equation. Melted Cheese and Beans. Cheese alone. Cheese and onion. Cheesy tuna melt potato. Why is it ALWAYS there? And with the amount melted in, the flavour of the potato doesn't get to shine through...
UNDERRATED: Cottage Cheese with Chives. Due to the above reasoning, allowing the potato itself to shine through, whilst still getting cheese and loads of tasty protein instead of just PURE CARB MADNESS, the subtle sourness of Cottage Cheese helps the potato to come through and say "hey, remember you're not just eating a block of cheese, I'm here too!!"
OVERRATED AND UNDERRATED: SUSHI?
