Re: Food and Drink: In That Category These Are Nominated - Overrated and Underrated!
OVER: CURRY SAUCE/GRAVY. Seriously, what is it with this craze in Chippy's?! 'Do ya want gravy on that?' NO, I sure as hell don't. This ain't no roast dinner or toad in the hole, leave my fishy alone! Maybe it's just my neighbourhood (before everyone argues with me that it's not overrated) but they've gone mad for the stuff. It's an epidemic I tell you! HELP ME.
N.B. If you don't mean from the Chippy then I'd say Tomato Ketchup. It doesn't enhance the flavour like Tartar sauce or lemon juice does, it just covers it up.

UNDER: A simple squeeze of a lemon. Seriously, one lemon slice drizzled over the fish is enough to enhance the fish flavour, add a new dimension to the dish, and not completely dominate the fish. Who needs mayo and TK when you have a lemon ey. CITRUS IS MA MISTRESS.

    OVERRATED: PRAWN CURRY.
Prawns - the entry-level shellfish, with a totally inoffensive subtle flavour not as potent as river crab, not as fishy as a scallop; super gentle, not too salty, with a meaty texture. So why not COVER them in an insanely powerful spice-based sauce and render them utterly indistinguishable by any of their unique qualities!!

    UNDERRATED: TEMPURA PRAWN HEADS.
Sounds grotesque, but if you've got a mad adoration for prawns, langoustine or lobster this is SUPER CONCENTRATED TASTE PARTY. Everyone knows prawn head is about 10 times as tasty as the body, so adding a light crunchy batter, you create NIRVANA!

Underrated: lemon meringue pies. Nowhere ever seems to have these on the dessert menus! And at dinner parties, no citrus pies. Sighs. It's such a good dessert and for some reason never chosen! Also puff pastry mince pies. So much better than shortcuts pastry ones. Sorry, I know that's two but hey, it had to be said.

Overrated: Pork pies. Maybe it's just me, but jellied meat pastry pie. I'm alright thanks. They seem to invade every damn picnic, leave me and my Scotch eggs and sausage rolls be dang it!

    OVERRATED: LOADED NACHOS.
It's crisps. Crisps with bobs of all manner of nondescript crap all over it. How is that a meal?! Can I pour Walkers ready salted on a plate, fire some cheddar and gammon on it and call it "Brit Nachos", and it's a meal, too?!

    UNDERRATED: TOASTIES.
Kinda "uncool" these days next to subs, baguettes, paninis and ciabattas, but they're infinitelyflexible, they can be ANYTHING - cheap, and everyone has bread and stuff in the cupboard to experiment!!

OVER: Tesco's Finest and suchlike from other supermarkets. The pretentious posh ones, 'Pork and Red Ale', 'Smokey Pork and Maple Bacon', 'Pork and Apple', 'Pork and Chilli' etc. WHY. I like ma sausages plain, simple as it were. If I want an added flavour, I'll have sauce or seasoning or chillies with it. Plus, it's like DOUBLE the price.

UNDER: Hall's Wee Willie Winkies Mini Sausages. Where have these gone?! I used to LOVE em when I was younger. But I can't seem to find them nowadays.

Dani, the problem is you're not in Scotland!! We're watching Disney Pixar's Brave already, Wee Willie Winkies are plentiful and men are kilted!!

    OVERRATED: ONION RINGS.
You thought I was instantly going to say fish, as it's the given answer, aye? Nyahhh! Onion Rings. The onion inside goes mooshy, the batter to onion ratio absurd (sometimes its like... Pure batter) and the water content of the onion means it just soaks in fat, loses flavour and... All the crrrrrunch!!

    UNDERRATED: CAULIFLOWER PAKORA.
Pakora are jahlicious fritters, but between vegetable, chicken, mushroom and fish, we have fairly samey choices. Tried a cauliflower floret pakora though? Whoa. It stays in floret form, gorgeously al dente, with the fatty, salty edge you crave in cauliecheese, but ACTUALLY TASTING the veg and getting BONUS BATTER CRUNCH.

OVER: Eclaires. Who doesn't know what one of these is?! They're like EVERYWHERE I swear. It's eclaidemic! (tenuous link I know). It's just a bit of pastry and chocolate and cream. You don't need to act like it's the be all and end all of cream cakes, because, quite frankly, it ain't. Alwright. Plus, profiteroles are so much cuter, and you get more chocolate on em if you get the ones at the top or the bottom. More chocolate on my cream filled pastry beats less chocolate. Fact.

UNDER: Mixed Berry Turnovers. Apple turnovers are up there in the cream cake world for me, its the sugary pastry and the cream with apple mix that just hits ma buttons jus right, but everyone knows about the good ol' apple turnover. But mixed berry turnovers are a completely new ballgame. True, I still opt for the apple occasionally, but having tried a mixed berry turnover, I wouldn't say no! They are like a summer fruit crumble compared to an apple crumble. Incredibly tasty, that's what. Mixed berries and cream and sugary pastry. Why does no one know about them? I'll say to someone, yeah, I love a mixed berry turnover and they're like...you mean apple? No. I mean mixed berry.

OVER AND UNDER OF DESSERTS AT A DINNER PARTY
    N'aw, I couldn't do it. I CRACKED.

OVER: Trifle. Yeah, you probably didn't even make this yourself. I know Bird's custard when I see it. And I don't care how much alcohol you put in the jelly, you still wont get a smile out of me. I want something DIFFERENT, something exciting. Bore off trifle, go back to Nan's house.

UNDER: Upside down sponge cakes. Seriously, why don't more people make these? My favourite is with peaches and syrup, it can look pretty too - with that whole, upside down look and then the shiny peaches. Can slice it at the table, serve with a jug of hot custard. Happy Melissa.

OVER: Tomato. It's such a prominent vegetable featuring in most salads and many fast food burgers but I don't think like the taste or texture of them. Also the seedy bits always break loose.

UNDER: Peas. When I think of veg I think one makes a bit of a sacrifice to eat them in return for the nutritional benefits. However this is not the case for peas. I'd happily eat peas disregarding their veg status because they are TASTY.

    OVERRATED: RED WINE.
My ex's poncey stepdad insisted on a glass of red with roast beef. "RED WITH RED FNOFFLE-FOFFLE HARDY HAR!", he would declare, and bite his roast beef and sip his wine; in fact, it is merely a myth that WHITE WITH FISH, RED WITH BEEF OOOOONLY! is a recipe for success; I know plenty of reds that marry with, say, sole or plaice, and some citrussy whites that counter pork well...

    UNDERRATED: OJ.
Not Simpson; orange juice. Or apple juice actually; just an acidic pure juice. Think about a roast for a second. Roast beef-iron taste. Gravy- meaty juices, fats, iron taste. Roast veg-oily crunch; Yorkshire puds- fatty pastry; acidic juices cut through that one sided assault the way your carrots, sprouts or caulie cannae!!

OVER: Smarties. I just don't think they work, they don't feel PART of the McFlurry, they seem to be something that just gets in the way. And they're TOO crunchy. You kinda have to pick them out really and eat them separately.

UNDER: Toffee Crisp. Best Mcfluzza, evaaaah. Chocolate, yet crispy? Crispy, yet inoffensive and doesn't disrupt the soft ice cream. Toffee sauce. It should be a permanent one if you ask me!

I didn't know they made a toffee crisp mcflurry. Ever. It sounds lovely.

Over: Peanut butter and Jelly. I know, I know it's great. But why do people automatically assume you are going to have a PB&J toast if you make yourself a sweet sandwich? Because in my opinion, the best thing to have on a toast is:

UNDER: a GENEROUS layer of Manuka honey with crushed up hazelnuts. Trust me, try it. I once bought a hazelnut honey spread from this gourmet food sale and I have remade it ever since.

OVER: BREAD. So what this cheese cost kajillion billion pounds; let's buy a whole load, melt it, dip a few bits of bread in it, get ridiculously full up, and then waste the rest of it. Hey, why not. When in Switzerland and whatnot... Or pretending to be there and having fondue at home/in a restaurant. Cheapish cheese works just as well, and you don't end up pouring half your money down the sink.
-bet you thought I was going to say crackers di'nt cha

UNDER: GRAPES. Yeah, I actually like the grape and cheese mix. So shoot me. Not so much the redcurrant and cheese thing, I'm not a huge redcurrant fan anyway, but I find grapes can actually go really well with expensive and strong cheese. It cuts through the strong flavour really nicely, it's kinda like having chutney with cheese, but instead it's a grape. And I find chutneys can be odd sometimes. Least with a grape you know what you're getting.

    OVERRATED: BREAKFAST CEREALS.
Okay, so you don't "MAKE" it per se, but the sheer amount of people that look at me like I'm murdering a puppy with the head of a kitten when I open and eat a wee box/bag of cereal and eat it like a packet of crisps is astounding. IT DOESN'T NEED MILK YOU KNOW. Except Shredded Wheat. And Weetabix. And Oati... YOU KNOW WHAT, SCREW YOU.

    UNDERRATED: KAUSAR AGAR AGAR DESSERTS.

Get these from an Asian Supermarket and you will NOT be sorry. It DOES take a while in the fridge but what comes out is an INSANE blancmange-thing with the most tangy, moreish flavour. SPREAD THE WORD PEEPS.

OVER: Pasta salads. I was going to say sarnies, but actually, supermarket ones are pretty decent. There is just something about them that makes them taste..different. But pasta salads genuinely taste better homemade. And are a lot cheaper. AND YOU CAN HAVE MORE!

UNDER: Premade jelly pots. Okay, so jelly is easy to make in the cubes or sachets, even a kid can do it..but I still buy jelly pots all the time anyway. It's just quicker and the flavours are better. And I don't want a whole massive bowl of jelly, I just want a wee bit!

    Good choices Melissa! Hartley power!

OVERRATED: POTATOES. ORGANIC POTATOES. They defy logic. Tubers by definition are totally non fussy beings, they'd grow in a scabby ditch to their top potential!!

UNDERRATED: ORGANIC EGGS. I ALWAYS buy organic eggs. Unlike meat where that animal is dead, the hen that laid these eggs is likely still alive, and it'd be good knowing it's not just hooked to an egg-pulling machine for the rest of its life!!

OVER: Popcorn chicken from KFC. This stuff is processed, often chewy and disappears so quickly so when you've finished you feel like you've hardly eaten anything. I don't understand why people go crazy over this stuff, when there are nicer (albeit not too much nicer) offerings on the KFC menu.

UNDER: Blueberries. These little delights are brilliant, filling and healthy! They're tasty, juicy and people just pass them over for other fruits that are avaliable. Go for the blueberries guys, they're called superfoods for a reason!

    OVERRATED: ROOT BEER FLOATS.

They taste like ass. Why are they so famous? It's a gingery-tasting sugary ale... thing, topped with ice cream that instantly melts and sends root beer over the side of the glass, curdling really quickly if you don't gulp it down... and if you DO, it continues to churn in yer tum! WHY?!

    UNDERRATED: DELI MEAT SANDWICHES

Let's face it, you're going to pick up the menu, scan it, then order a DAMNED BURGER. BO-RING. But what American Diners and Delis do SO, SO right is a proper Deli Meat/Cold Cut sandwich. HUGE portions of salt beef, pastrami, roast beef, pork and brisket in thickly cut, semi-toasted breads, and they're a bit more adventurous than our MAYO PLZ society, with a variety of chutneys, mustards, and krauts.

I mean, this is a SMALL Katz Deli pastrami sandwich:
