How is Economics in Durham?
It seems that both Durham and its economics rank 6 or 7 in UK, which is good. But their economics is bachelor of art, that might focus much more on theory instead of practice, and less about math, statistics.
So I'm wondering will it be difficult for me to work in a financial related job due to the lack of math training?
Besides, durham seems to be a quite small town, it can be very difficult to find a part-time job, right?
Can anyone tell me how on earth Economics is in Durham?(esp.those who had the course)

Re: How is Economics in Durham? In 1st year there are 3 compulsory modules you have to do, and they are Elements of Economics, World Economy, and Economic Methods. Methods is the only purely maths based module, focusing on pure maths in 1st term and statistics in 2nd term. You can then choose the other 3 modules from a variety of options, or even take a module from another course altogether.(Original post by qingjingzhilian)

2nd and 3rd year is where you can tailor the course to be as relevant to you as possible, and can make it as mathematical as you want by choosing the more maths based modules, or for people more interested in theory can go down this route.
In terms of career prospects, being a BA is more tradition than anything else, and the majority of 1st year students have got on to Spring Weeks and it wont effect any job prospects. Not many students have a part-time job in Durham, and those that do are largely employed within their college on the bar or in the shop.
Hope this helps. -

Most students who have part-time jobs work for the university or their colleges (in the college bar, college shop, as a student ambassador, temping in the university admin departments, refereeing college sports matches, etc.). -

Re: How is Economics in Durham? Thanks very much for ur answer~ The another thing I am wondering is how hard was it to get second upper or first honours in durham? I once saw that only 14% econ students in durham can finally get first class honours, is that true?(Original post by Econ92)

Re: How is Economics in Durham?Everyone who gets a 70% average gets a first class degree, there aren't any limits on the number of people who can get them.(Original post by qingjingzhilian)

I think economics has quite a high first class % rate compared to other social sciences, as if you take maths-based modules and are good at them you can get high scores (80%+) whereas very, very, very few people ever get 80%+ on an essay.
Edit - http://www.dur.ac.uk/resources/spa/s...ults/112-8.pdf
Economics is 'Business school (Durham)' - so 13.59% got firsts and 70.90% got 2:1s, 14.99% got 2:2s.
To be honest, if you put the work in, choose modules which suit your strengths and are interested in economics then you should be getting at least a 2:1.Last edited by undergradstudent; 25-03-2012 at 11:02.
