I think the year 12 thread and this thread are overrun by mathmos. Even the year 13 mathmos are turning up
-
Re: Cambridge Applicants for 2013 EntryI'm thinking about that one too!!(Original post by Etoile)
Yeah I am going on the language and linguistics one! Are you?
Not totally decided, I emailed the uni the other day to ask for more information and the woman said the programme hasn't been confirmed yet so to email back later to get the full details. So yeah I'm gonna do that and then see
Just feels a bit strange haha, I'm not sure that my grades are going to be good enough so don't want to get my hopes up too much
But it would probably be helpful for linguistics courses in general so I will probably end up going

That's exactly my view! Even if I don't end up applying, it will still be a fun and worthwhile experience

Re: Cambridge Applicants for 2013 Entry
Do you think having 5A*s and 5As at GCSE is ok to get into medicine at Cambridge ? (Bearing in mind, I was in hospital for the whole of year 10). I know my GCSE's are a bit on the low side for medicine but since taking part in a shadowing scheme at Cambridge earlier this year, I want to go there so much!
So yeah any replies would be much appreciated!

Re: Cambridge Applicants for 2013 EntrySure- they're more bothered about AS UMS(Original post by thegreenchildren)

Re: Cambridge Applicants for 2013 EntryYes, because of the part in bold mostly. You'll should apply through CSAS (the special considerations system) though, and if you get a doctor's note to prove it all, etc. Then actually, come to think of it 5A* 5A is very impressive if you actually missed the whole of year 10... Why didn't you retake the year though?(Original post by thegreenchildren)

Re: Cambridge Applicants for 2013 EntryMainly because I was able to sit all the module exams that I missed in january of year 11 and then just take all the other exams in June.(Original post by Llewellyn)

The person at my school who takes care of the uni applications said that she would put a special consideration note (or something similar) in with the application. Is that what you mean? Or is it a whole different thing? -
Re: Cambridge Applicants for 2013 EntryYour school should definitely mention your circumstances in your reference anyway. Speaking of which, be very careful about where you apply. Some universities (Birmingham to name one) will immediately reject people with less than X A*s, where X is normally above 7. So make sure you apply to Universities who have an access scheme, or put less weight on GCSE performance.(Original post by thegreenchildren)

Cambridge is one of these universities. Cambridge has a special CSAS process -which is different from just a normal school reference (google it to find out the details), where your application is separate from most, because you have "strange" or "compromising" circumstances (like an illness, disability, something that disrupted/ is disrupting your studies). Through this, Cambridge will mark your case as more individual, and you'll be assessed from there. This system (CSAS) exists for candidates just like yourself, so that you can be assessed fairly and on an individual basis. Naturally, your education was interrupted, which must have had a negative effect on your grades, so you won't be directly compared to someone who hasn't been disrupted.
Having said all of that, GCSEs don't form a huge part of the Cambridge application process anyway (they are considered though). You don't need to worry about your GCSEs though. -
Re: Cambridge Applicants for 2013 Entry
Human, Social, and Political Sciences, Pembroke/Kings/Trinity Hall/Trinity/Open Application, have History, Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Psychology at AS (continued History, Chemistry, Biology to A2), hoping to get A*A*A. GCSEs at A*A*AAAAAABBBB - unlikely, but you what they say, if you don't try...

Another bonus of CSAS is it is a guaranteed interview (from what I've heard/read somewhere).(Original post by Llewellyn)

My GCSE's were one of the two highest in the school so will they still consider my case? I mean will they think, 'well actually her education must not have been interrupted that much as she managed to do well compared to her peers' ??(Original post by Oromis263)

By the way, thanks for all the advice!
