We usually get a choice between sparring and kata so I choose kata. With grades coming up I end up helping to teach others kata so its a chance to go through them in a bit more depth for me while I am doing the kata slowly.

Wouldnt want to spar in this heat like!

Hello, I'm pretty new, but was wondering if I could please join your martial arts society.

I am currently stuying a traditional Chinese martial art out of interest, health, seld-defence etc.. instead of as a sport. (Although techniquelly I'm on a break at the moment, due to domestic/family issues, and having to work all the time to pay off my old stupid student loan. I will start training again when I go to Uni).

The style is called "Nan Shaolin Wuzuquan".

    Cheers,

    Adam

I had my first Karate training session for 3 weeks today! (I took time off to concentrate on my exams). Damn good to be getting back into it, especially now I've got 2 and a half months of holiday ahead of me to train myself stupid!

A mong kon? Yeah, I don't have one... I'm more into the self defence side of things as opposed to actual ring/competition type of muay thai. Kinda funky though.

Anyone else out there have a damn annoying fringe, that gets really hot n horrible when doing martial arts? i mean what do you do with it, i hate having a quiff, for gradings i usually do little plaits but that takes waaaaaaaaaay too much time to do twice a week.
arrrghh, grading in july, in this heat 16 katas!!! omg but eeeee brown/white belt if i pass

We don't do grading.... muay thai isn't really a martial art which does it as much as others (some places do it, but they don't have massive overriding societies like in karate... so depending on where u go u can be different rank and vary massively)

Good luck with it Bet its good to get some sort of recognition.

Hi all, not really sure if this is a thread where general queries are welcome, but I thought I'd post in here as I'm sure there are a few posters who can answer me.

Are those supposedly amazing grandmasters actually very tough fighters? I know they know some great techniques, but is that all for show or can they actually fight very well in a real situation? I often think it would be funny if those little ******* Chavs and thugs got their arses kicked by a grandmaster/whatever (especially the Chinese ones ) but how would most of them fare in situations like that?

Also, are there any particular fighting forms that are best for self-defence? I'd love to learn one, but I wouldn't know what to go for.

Please don't think I'm rubbishing martial arts and martial artists with my initial query, but I'm actually very interested in it and would love to learn more. Plus, I ask very weird questions.

Muay Thai grading has got to be one of the most confusing things I've ever seen. My club only does four levels, but I've seen clubs that have as many as 11.

    Hey everyone,

Just joined up, I'm a bluebelt in Nihon Ryu Ju Jitsu. The club's mainly self defense, but we do a fair bit of sparring too. Hi.

Ju Jitsu is by the best form of martial art for self defence!

The self defence I do (ju jitsu), DOES teach us how to handle pratical situations, we even go as far as simulating practical situations. I haven't had to use these skills in public though.
I believe a 'grandmaster' who is a quick thinker and has good knowledge and skill of his martial art would be a good fighter , but they are not invincible either..
