My friends and I are looking at some places in the Docklands - you can get pretty large properties for relatively cheap prices. You could also look at Camden Town, which is popular with students, along with Angel. I also know someone who lives near Liverpool Street Station, and she knows of properties available around her area. If you don't mind the travel, you could also look at places over the river - my rowing coach lives in Vauxhall and I also know someone who lives near Canada Water station.

Camden, Liverpool Street, Canada Water, Angel and Vauxhall do sound expensive. They are after all in zone 1.

Canada Water is in zone 2, but I'm sure if you do a flatshare with enough people it'll roughly equate to or even be less than what you're paying for halls (if you are staying in halls right now). Most students choose to stay in these areas because of the proximity to many of the UoL colleges. There is the option of staying further out, but you'd then have to factor in transportation costs, and that gets to be too expensive for some people.
