Importance of Dissertation in Degree for Teaching
I am aiming to become an English teacher after graduating (hopefully with Teach First) and currently I am studying BA French and English at university. I've discovered that because I do a joint degree, I am not obligated to undertake a dissertation in my final year. I've heard a lot about dissertations being as important thing to talk about in terms of your degree, but in my English department it's only 5000 words, the same as you have to write for any of the special subject options. There's a module being offered on creative writing where a tutor who is a published fiction writer helps critique your work, which really interests me, but I don't want to put myself at a major disadvantage for after university by not doing a dissertation. Can anyone advise me if it's particularly important to have done one? Thanks!

It's not important. You have a degree - 50% of which in the specialism. You satisfy the criteria. To all intents and purposes, you can discuss your 5000 word paper as though it was a 'true' dissertation (whatever that is).

I have a psychology degree and my dissertation was on the contributions to body dissatisfaction in women of different ages and I have just been accepted on to a primary pgce..... I dont think it matters as long as you have consistant grades I think you shall be fine! I think it matters when you go onto do a masters
